A character sprays spit from their mouth when they talk. Sometimes they're just careless and don't realize what they're doing. Other times, they're spitefully doing it on purpose, or just don't care. Either way, it serves to establish the character as rude or uncouth. Usually, the spit will be sprayed in the face of whoever the spit-sprayer is talking to, but on rarer occasions it could end up in food or just making a mess. This may be played for its grossout value, and/or for the entertainment value of seeing the spittee's angry reaction. Most spit-sprayers are male, as Guys are Slobs. Many of them are also loudmouths, which goes hand-in-hand with spraying spit for two reasons: not only is it easier to end up doing it while talking loudly, but someone who doesn't care if they're talking too loudly is less likely to care about the grossness of spraying spit. Compare Drool Deluge and Ocular Gushers. Examples |

Looney Tunes has Daffy Duck who is famously portrayed as either a zany pest or a narcissistic glory hound. The one thing that remains consistent across his appearances is a tendency to spit when he speaks. To a lesser extent is Sylvester the Cat, who has a similar speech impediment and is usually portrayed as a crude antagonistic foil to Tweety Bird. Tasmanian Devil is also prone to spitting while he talks (well, screeches) and often makes it worse by Blowing a Raspberry at the end of his sentences. | |
