When biologists studying wolf packs noticed that there were usually a male and female to whom the others deferred, they dubbed those dominant wolves the "alpha male and female." In zoos, it wasn't uncommon for "lower ranking" wolves to fight their alphas for dominance. Fiction starring wolves, werewolves, or other social animals or beastmen seized upon this concept. What better way to show the brutality of nature than by having them fight to the death? Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })Often the alpha female is left out, making it almost always a male position. Note, however, that this is Reality Is Unrealistic. The aforementioned "alpha male and female" has largely been debunked as simply the father and mother of the pack, and the biologist who coined the term, Dr. Mech, no longer uses it in favor of the term "breeding male and female." Moreover, the bloody scenes in zoos were usually the result of zookeepers cramming many unrelated wolves together in small spaces. |

The loup-garou pack in Blood and Chocolate determine who is the new alpha male and "queen bitch" via a battle royale known as "the Ordeal" following the death of one of the old pair. How to Train Your Dragon 2 introduces the gigantic Bewilderbeast species of dragons that automatically have the Alpha status partially through their large size and mostly through their ability to control other dragons with a combination of sound and their piercing gaze. It's noted that a dragon doesn't get true alpha status solely based on its species and ability to control other dragons though, as Toothless becomes the new Alpha by challenging Drago's Bewilderbeast to protect Hiccup, distracting it enough to break its control over the other dragons. The Red Death from the first film may also count, though Valka implies that a Bewilderbeast would have an authority over that species as it's a "King" to the Death's "Queen," though this doesn't refer to the dragon's gender as such.

In Animorphs, the "fighting for dominance" phenomenon occurs repeatedly when two male animals are in proximity to each other (as morphing also adds the animal's instincts, first-time morphers may have trouble taking command). When the team first morph wolves, Marco is given a female wolf to acquire, as Cassie wanted to avoid two male wolves instinctively fighting for dominance (which does happen later, when they run into a real wolfpack). Later still, Rachel acquires a male Hork-Bajir and they both start sizing each other up while Rachel gets the morph's instincts under control. In order to infiltrate a meat-packing plant, everyone acquires cattle. Unfortunately, Ax and Tobias get a steer (a castrated bull), so when they morph they get two non-castrated bulls, each infuriated at the other's presence. |

In A Song of Ice and Fire, Arya Stark is forced to send her direwolf pet/companion Nymeria running out of fear that Joffrey and Cersei would have it killed because it defended her from Joffrey's bullying. Over the course of the books, she dreams of being a wolf, leading a pack of them as they raid the countryside. It's later revealed to other characters that the Starks have a warging ability in their blood, and thus Arya is subconsciously tapping into Nymeria's head when she dreams.

In Game of Thrones, just like A Song of Ice and Fire above, Arya has to send Nymeria away in Season 1. Fast forward to season 7, and Arya, on her way back to Winterfell after hearing that Jon has become King in the North, finds herself surrounded by wolves, led by Nymeria. They share a reunion, but ultimately part ways because Nymeria's place is in the wild, not as her pet or companion.

In Warhammer 40,000, there have been several cases of humans fighting their way to the top of a Fenrisian wolfpack to assert dominance over them. Note that Fenrisian wolves are the descendants of an experiment to combine human and wolf DNA to better survive the harsh environment (resulting in a more intelligent wolf the size of a rhino- both the Earth mammal and the Awesome Personnel Carrier), so submitting to the stronger may be their human instincts talking.

Teen Wolf has alphas as the largest and most powerful type of wolf; they generally lead their own packs (compared to betas and omegas, who don't). The antagonist of season one is an evil alpha, while the antagonists of the first half of season three are a pack comprised entirely of alphas. There is also a "True Alpha," a term used for alphas who become one out of sheer Heroic Willpower.

In the Mercy Thompson novels, "Alpha" is the actual title used by the leaders of werewolf packs, with defined responsibilities and entitlements. An Alpha's status gives him (and it's Always Male) the ability to issue commands to pack subordinates that they cannot refuse to heed, an enhanced Healing Factor, and a few other powers that facilitate control and protection of his pack.

In The Call of the Wild, Buck first has to deal with the near-psychopathic lead dog of his sled team, killing and replacing him.
