Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })In literal villages, small cities, school settings and online communities there's a hierarchy in which a handful of people lies on the top (such as jocks in most high-school movies) and the rest are split in several levels according to their social skills, abilities and reputation. But who's the person at the deepest level of the social pyramid? Enter the village idiot. They're not just dumb, they're slow, obtuse or even borderline mentally impaired (with the Values Dissonance and Unfortunate Implications that go with it). In light-hearted movies, they usually end up as The Chew Toy and Butt-Monkey at the hands of their antithesis (e.g., the aforementioned Jerk Jock). If said village idiot becomes the one to notice an oncoming problem and tries to warn the other villagers about it, expect them to suffer from Poor Communication Kills and be largely ignored because of their status. Similarly, they may deliver some ignored Simple-Minded Wisdom. Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })At this point it is essential to point out that this is social dynamic trope and not just a Stock Character trope, and so examples focus on how characters are treated and perceived by others in-universe. It is not enough for a them to be dumb, even if they are astoundingly dumb. They have to be derided or treated as someone to not be taken seriously by nearly everyone around them for them to be this trope. The polar opposite of A Hero to His Hometown. See also The Fool or The Ditz. Compare The Friend Nobody Likes, Half-Witted Hillbilly (when the Idiot is the half-witted of the hillbillies) and Inspirationally Disadvantaged (sometimes). |

Beauty and the Beast: Belle's village has Le Fou (translated in English as "the madman"), whose intelligence is at the antipodes of Belle's. He spends most of his time on-screen doing something goofy (if not outright stupid) and getting bullied by everybody (or beaten in the case of his boss Gaston). Ironically, he's the one inciting the mob against Belle's father.

Ultra Fast Pony: Even though much of the humor revolves around characters grabbing the Idiot Ball, Rainbow Dash consistently stands out as the dumbest character in the show. The episode "The Cheesen One" reveals she officially holds the rank of Village Idiot in Ponyville, which apparently makes her the entire town's scapegoat. The Village Idiot position is important enough that, when Rainbow goes on a vacation, the rest of town holds a vote on who will fill the position until her return.

Deconstructed for Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh is the self-proclaimed "bear of very little brain" of the Hundred Acre Wood, and does often act the part. However the entire wood is a Cloudcuckoo Land, with others such as Rabbit and Owl who are regarded (self-enforced) as wise and sensible animals of the wood being outdone by Pooh's Simple-Minded Wisdom (of course, he rarely realises he is outsmarting anyone, and so Hilarity Ensues anyway).

Within the villages in Minecraft are green-robed Villagers referred to as "Nitwits". They are incapable of gaining a profession and are slower to react to danger than other villagers. In fact, they were internally called "Village Idiots" by the development team until they decided the term wasn't the right fit for the world of the game.

Monty Python's Flying Circus. A sketch in one episode Played With the concept, focusing on the role of village idiots in modern society. The idiots provide someone for most other people to look down on and ridicule. The sketch reveals that they just pretend to be crazy and are really quite normal except when performing.

Johnny Bravo: Johnny is a brainless dolt who thinks of himself as God's gift to women, a notion frequently disproven by how often they are turned off by his boorishness and stupidity. In "Hail to the Chump", it is stated that the village idiot is automatically made mayor in the event the entire town council gets food poisoning. Naturally, Johnny is made mayor, confirming him to be the town's village idiot. However, Johnny's terrible policies result in the town turning on him in protest.

Gravity Falls: Mcgucket is a strange, old hillbilly known for his rather broken understanding of logic and is not remotely respected by anyone in town. It eventually turns out he used to be Ford's friend who became so traumatized by the town and their work that he invented a machine to take his memories, but overuse of it cost Mcgucket his mind.
