Someone has a skill, or an attack, or a secret method, that always gives them an advantage in fighting, competition, etc. They'll use it all the time. Or maybe only when they're desperate or in a situation that calls for that specific advantage and nothing else. When they do make use of it, they're unbeatable and always come out on top... Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Until someone else comes along who also has that skill, can do that trick, or knows that secret method. It takes them by surprise. Then the game changes completely and the person who's used to winning loses. They have to either accept defeat, or their story takes a different direction as they suddenly need to get better, learn a new trick, or find a way to counter someone whose got their own trick up their own sleeve. That One Attack can come into play, when both characters have it and another option must be found in order for one or the other to win. Sister trope to Beat Them at Their Own Game. Definitely one of the Surprise Tropes. |

The Transformers: Shows up at least three time in the original cartoon's run: In "The Key To Vector Sigma" part 2, the new Stunticons show off their power by combining to form the evil Menasor, a power only previously displayed by the equally evil Devastator. Cue Optimus Prime revealing the recently built Aerial-Bots can ALSO combine into a giant robot, the high-flying Superion. During the Big Damn Movie, as the Decepticons are demolishing the defenses of Autobot City, Soundwave sends his casseticons to take out the Autobots' communications dish so they can't call reinforcements. The Cons get in and look like they'll be adding Perceptor to the day's bodycount, only for Blaster to declare two can play this game and release his own tape team. This is significant as, while Blaster has been billed as Soundewave's rival, this is the first onscreen appearance of his own cassette warriors. Finally, in "Grimlock's New Brain," the Terrorcons find themselves equally matched against the new Technobots and proceed to combine into Abominus, forcing the good guys to retreat. At a loss for what to do, Grimlock informs the new team that they too possess a powerful gestalt form, heralding the arrival of Computron. |

Accel World: The Incarnate System, a Dangerous Forbidden Technique, can be this in Brain Burst. Capable of allowing a user to alter the virtual world via their own will, attacks born from Incarnate are far stronger than the bog standard attacks provided to players. In fact, the only thing that can block an Incarnate Attack is another one, which is part of the reason the technique is forbidden to be used unless someone else uses it first. When Noumi (Dusktaker) used his Incarnate Attack to defeat Cyan Pile, he was only stopped when Haruyuki figured out the system as well, at which point Noumi began to lose much of the edge he'd had over the good guys. Sadly, they didn't know about his new partner...

The Flash (2014): Barry's super-speed allows him to handle most non-metahuman threats easily, and meta-humans just take a little more effort or imagination. While still a nice guy, he's enjoying his power. Dr. Wells even notes that he's getting just a little cocky. Then Barry meets Reverse-Flash, who is also a speedster, much more skilled in using his powers, and not a fan of Barry. In the aftermath of their first fight, Barry is in a state of near-panic over the fact that he's not the fastest man alive anymore.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders: DIO gets hit with this early on in his final battle with Jotaro Kujo; having the latter entirely defenseless with the help of his Stand's Time Stop ability, DIO approaches Jotaro with the intent of finishing him off right then and there... only for Jotaro to suddenly move within frozen time and catch DIO off-guard with a fist through his torso, courtesy of Star Platinum — a consequence of Jotaro beginning to awaken the same ability to stop time as DIO.

Justice League: Throughout the film, despite his inexperience the Flash's sheer super-speed has given him a clear advantage in every confrontation, to the point that everyone else seems frozen by comparison. He tries to use this when facing the recently resurrected Superman, only for him suddenly turn to face him. The confrontation quickly turns against him as Superman's own speed and reflexes is enough to keep up, whilst his other powers give him the advantage. Played more humorous in climax, where now on much better terms the two agree to having a friendly race across the country.
