When a character enters an episode midway through the story, typically, the first thing they say is, "What is going on?" or "Would someone mind telling me what's going on?" or some other variation on this phrase. Then the other characters typically give a quick summary of the story so far, or there is a quick cut away to another scene for a bit or simply quick Fade In/Fade Out back to the characters that implies they had just finished giving a detailed briefing of the situation. If it's the audience who is also wondering what's going on, be prepared for an Info Dump. The polar opposite is Let Me Get This Straight.... Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): Alan Jonah says as much when the Vivienne-San hybrid has a convulsive spurt mid-metamorphosis whilst its gestation is being monitored by his men, in the first chapter. Also in the first chapter, Vivienne's mind asks as much when she briefly stirs during her and San's first gestation, unaware of what's happening. In Chapter 6, Vivienne flashes back to a time when the effects of being around Ghidorah at Outpost 32 got so bad that she had to make a video call to Serizawa out of the blue, and Serizawa pretty much started the call by asking after her in surprised concern. Also in Chapter 6, Tejada, once she catches on that there's something going on that she doesn't know about (and after having a handful of other big revelations dropped at hers and her peers' feet), demands that Mariko tell her what's going on. |

Doc McStuffins has the song "What's Going On?". It normally appears in stories in which "Time for Your Checkup" was not performed. Beginning in the show's second season. It is usually sung if a character notices another character acting different in a negative way, like if the character on the receiving end is acting excessively scared when they were previously very brave (e.g. Like in "Think Pink", Chilly was afraid to show Doc himself pink or in "Gooooooal!", Sir Kirby was afraid to tell Doc about his hurt arm), acting less competent, seeming sad, seeming tongue-tied, acting like they want to hide (and that is not normal), (e.g. Like in "Top Lamb", after Lambie played with the new kitchen set and injured herself, she hid it from Doc.), acting like they want to tell a lie (e.g. like in "Chilly and the Dude" and "Nurse's Office" Chilly tries to lie on Doc), or not wanting to do something they ordinarily really like (e.g. Doc not wanting to fix a toy or Lambie not wanting to cuddle or Moo-Moo not wanting to do ballet). The song itself, usually performed by Doc, consists of a greeting (Hey), a general inquiry of what is happening (what's going on), an inquiry of what bad thing might be happening (Tell me/us what's wrong/Tell me/us what's bothering you), a reassurance (You're gonna be fine/we/I know there's something we/I can do), An instruction to reveal anything hidden (Got something on your mind don't you keep it inside) and a note on the possibility of them not knowing what is wrong (It might not be clear and that's why I'm/we're here). |

Godzilla: King of the Monsters: Emma Russell says this thrice. The very first line of Mothra's birthing scene coming from Emma is, "What the hell happened?" Prompting Dr. Mancini to fill Emma and the audience in on the Mothra egg's looming birth. Emma shortly after asks what's happening when the containment field unexpectedly fails and the outpost's security begins shutting down due to Jonah and his paramilitary's actions. Much later in the film, Emma quotes the trope name ad verbatim when alarms in the eco-terrorists' base begin blaring, at which point Jonah succinctly and sarcastically makes her aware of the ORCA's disappearance. In the novelization's side-story following Master Sergeant Nez and Mokele-Mbembe at Outpost 75, a couple of Nez's men ask what's happening. One of them asks Nez herself after the latter has doubled security at the outpost since receiving news of Jonah's assault on Outpost 61. Later, Dr. Kearns cries out "What the hell is going on?" when the facility shakes, prompting another operative to confirm that Mokele-Mbembe is awakening. During the intimidation display scene, Mark approaches Ilene to ask her what's happening after the base has begun trembling and alarms have started blaring, and Ilene tells him in quick and clear terms what the situation looks like so far. |
