In her youth, Sumireko Ogawa aspired to become a successful writer, promising herself that she would write a novel she could be proud of.Several years later, the 27-year-old Sumireko is working as a bookstore clerk, struggling with writer's block and grappling with the fact that her youthful enthusiasm for writing has faded... until, on the eve of her 28th birthday, Sumireko finds herself becoming a little girl under the moonlight, and rejoicing at the possibility of finally writing her novel again.Unfortunately, this "blessing" quickly becomes a nightmare: Sumireko is slowly dying from the side-effects of being restored to her younger self, and she is only saved by the intervention of her unassuming co-worker Ren Adashino, a self-professed dabbler in the occult. Sumireko's own interest in the occult and desire to find inspiration for her upcoming novel leads her to team up with Ren and his equally creepy sister Oto to solve the many supernatural mysteries around them...Mysterious Disappearances (Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushinote Literally translated as Mysteries, Maidens and Mysterious Disappearances) is an Urban Fantasy Mystery Horror manga written and illustrated by Nujima, currently serialized on Shogakukan's Yawaraka Spirits website since October 2019.An anime adaptation was announced with a premiere date of April 10, 2024, animated by Studio Zero-G.

Shapeshifter Baggage: Turns out that just because Sumireko can turn back into a child due to her curse doesn't mean the extra biomass from when she was an adult magically goes away; it's all compressed to the point that she will start bleeding from the ears and eyes if she stays a child for too long. This detriment goes away when the "Tsukuyomi's Water of Life" curse transfers to Sumireko thanks to her high compatibility with it; now that she is the 'curse' herself, she can safely shift between ages with no ill effect.

Cursed with Awesome

Cursed with Awesome: Several members of the cast are this, thanks to their run-ins with the 'curiosities' throughout the story. There are caveats at first, but 'solving' each curiosity soon grants that person (or object) a mostly harmless aspect of it, as a portion of the curiosity's curse has imprinted onto them. Sumireko's is "Tsukuyomi's Water of Life", which allows her to alter her physical age between adult and child at will. Uname-sensei retains the "Chinrinki Ogre's" ability to cause uncontrollable drooling, then immolation, by licking other peoples' shadows. Unlike most of the cast, she keeps a more permanent reminder of her run-in with the source of her ability in the form of a pair of small, horn-like nubs on her head. Nodoka's charred tablet retains a small portion of the Yorumun tsukumogami. Though much more childlike than the original one that ascends, she is just as sentient, and able to use weaker forms of the original's sea-based illusions. Shizuku gains the 'rainwater' aspect of the composite "Little Girl in Red" curiosity, giving her the ability to shift into a voiceless watery form.

Mysterious Waif: Oto. A more emotionally-driven example, especially once she starts opening up to Sumireko.

Healing Factor: a happy side-effect of Sumireko's ability to shift ages, though unlike most examples she must manually invoke her curse to heal every time, which exhausts her.
