Junji Ito's second anthology serial of short stories, comprised of original material not seen previously. My God, What Have I Done?: "Earthbound" revolves around a strange disorder spreading throughout the populace here random individuals have the uncontrollable urge to stand in uncomfortable positions at specific locations, becoming so rigid and heavy that they are almost immobile and eventually turn as hard as statues. Asano initially comes to believe that the disease is caused by an intense emotional attachment to the place they stick themselves after coming across a man with the syndrome next to the grave of a beloved childhood dog, but eventually discovers she's only half-right. There's only one intense emotion involved in all the cases: guilt. The man secretly killed his dog after it bit him, another man was involved in a hit-in-run child death on the street he's frozen, another woman murdered her unwanted baby in her bedroom, and even Asano's boss was a serial rapist/murderer in Asano's very apartment. The earthbound syndrome is a physical manifestation of their intense regret for what they've done. | |

The Secret of Long Pork Pies: In "Greased", Yui's family runs a barbecue restaurant. When Goro violently attacks her, he's killed by their father, who then serves him to the restaurant patrons. The restaurant briefly becomes hugely popular, but trade dwindles again when the meat runs out, forcing the father to cut off his own leg to serve instead. The first half of the story is exposition, explaining how this all happened; being forced to live above the restaurant and essentially being constantly marinated in the greasy fumes from the grill screwed up the physiology of both son and father, with Yui managing to mostly insulate her room. As a result, the grease had made the two men especially tasty (and also drove them completely insane). How bad is it? The ending reveals that the father's bodily fluids have been replaced by grease, which is implied to have been true for Goro as well. | |
