Around the Fur is the second studio album by California-based metal band Deftones, released on October 28, 1997 by Maverick Records.According to producer Terry Date, who produced this album and the band's 1995 debut Adrenaline (as well as three future albums by the band), the band wanted to become "more sophisticated" with their sophomore effort. Much of the album's lyrical topics (including existential angst, sex, romance, violence, death and breakups) was inspired by personal experiences of the band members as they lived in a Southern Seattle apartment during the album's production, ranging from internal issues to their frequent drinking, drug use and partying. The album has been categorized as Alternative Metal, Nu Metal and Post-Hardcore; however, guitarist Stephen Carpenter later statednote specifically of the nu metal association, "We didn’t really pay much attention to that. I remember when these subgenre names didn’t exist. It was just metal. So I don’t think we made a decision to step away from it – we’ve never paid attention to what anyone else was doing. We just did what we thought was right, and tried to make a killer album."This was also the first Deftones album to credit turntablist Frank Delgado as a guest following his uncredited work on several Adrenaline songs; he later officially joined the band in 1999.Around the Fur was supported by two singles: "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)". It was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1999, and later certified Platinum in 2011.

Mundane Made Awesome: "My Own Summer (Shove It)", a very intense metal song about wanting a cloud to block the sun due to the singer not liking how it's hurting his eyes.

Dark Reprise: Around the Fur's second track, "Lhabia," is one of the slower, more alternative rock-leaning tracks on the album. Later on in the album comes "Lotion," which is one of the heaviest and fastest songs off the album and features an almost identical main riff to that of "Lhabia."
