István a király (Stephen the King) is a 1983 Hungarian Rock Opera, composed by Levente Szörényi, lyrics written by János Bródy. Based upon Boldizsár Miklós’s play Az Ezredforduló (The Turn of the Millenium), the opera tells the story of Koppány’s rebellion against István, who’d become the first king of Hungary.Act I The Heritage: Introduces the characters and the situation shortly before the death of Prince Géza, István’s father. Culminates with the wedge getting driven between István and Koppány on Géza’s burial, as István is Géza’s chosen heir to the throne as per western primogeniture custom, however the ancient hungarian customs support Koppány, the eldest battle-capable male in Árpád’s line.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })Act II Esztergom: Focuses on István’s court, the preparations to war and István’s unwillingness to fight anyone, let alone his own blood.Act III Chief Koppány: Focuses on Koppány’s court and his preparations to war. Also focuses on Koppány’s family, and expains that it’s not a thirst for power that he goes to war, but because he wants to protect his people from what he sees as an invasion of foreigners who seek to subjugate the Magyars.Act IV István the King: Koppány lost, a bard laments over the victims of the war. István’s court celebrates, everyone demands their due. Réka, daughter of Koppány ask István to give her her father’s body, but Sarolt, István’s mother, chases her away. Koppány’s corpse is quartered. Artistic License – History: Koppány is portrayed as István's most important nemesis, however the actual Koppány was a rather small fry compared to some other Hungarian lords, who controlled territories over five times as large as he did. Also Koppány was Byzantine Christian, not a follower of the ancient Hungarian religion, which is hand waved in the play as only being a front he adopted to protect the people. Also, he only had one wife, and his Christian daughter, Réka was invented for the opera. | |
