There have been many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes over the years, on film, TV, and radio. But the series of dramatizations done by The BBC for Radio 4 between 1989 and 1998 are unique in that the Beeb managed to do what nobody has done before and only one decades later production has done since— they adapted every one of the fifty-six short stories and four novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and each production featured the same actors playing Holmes and Watson — Clive Merrison and the late Michael Williams (Judi Dench's husband). The series was produced and chiefly adapted by Bert Coules. The series was so popular that the BBC commissioned Coules to produce and write a series of pastiches entitled The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which ran for four seasons from 2002 to 2010 with Andrew Sachs playing Watson, due to Michael Williams' passing in 2001.Also of interest is Bert Coules' book about producing and writing the program — 221 BBC: Writing for the World's Only Complete Dramatised Canon and Beyond available for purchase from here.

End of an Age: The central theme of the last season: "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes". Queen Victoria has passed and now King Edward VII is on the throne and with him comes rapid modernization and Holmes increasingly begins to feel he's the relic of a bygone age whose pass his prime and decides to retire.

Analogy Backfire: In "The Thirteen Watches", Athelney Jones insists he might not have Holmes's deductive abilities, but he has good instincts, asking Holmes "Remember the Sholto brothers?" Holmes sardonically replies "Vividly," but doesn't bother to point out that in The Sign Of Four, Jones's instincts were wrong every step of the way.

Mrs Guttridge in "The Savior of Cripplegate Square" from The Further Adventures ... sort of. She's based on a Noodle Incident about a woman who "poisoned three little children for their insurance-money", but in the story she's actually a Well-Intentioned Extremist who believes the babies in her charge are Too Good for This Sinful Earth.

comment
Death by Adaptation: Mary Morstan. In Doyle's stories it's never explicitly said that she died, only that Dr. Watson suffered a "sad bereavement". Here, her deathbed is the opening scene to "The Empty House". Lucretia Venucci. She was the primary police suspect and she later hangs herself in her cell, due to the police's refusal to believe her innocence in "The Six Napoleons".

Dolled-Up Installment: "The Thirteen Watches" is based on "The Man With the Watches", a non-Holmes mystery by Doyle. (Although it does have a reference to "a well-known criminal investigator" who believes in scientific deduction and accepting the improbable if the alternative is impossible ... and who comes up with same completely wrong theory that the radio version attributes to Athelney Jones.)

Karma Houdini: In "The Remarkable Performance of Mr Frederick Merridew", Holmes deduces the truth of the matter, but can't prove it. His only consolation is the thought that the murderer, believing himself untouchable, might act again. The episode ends with Merridew working a gloating "confession" into his stage act, where nobody will take it seriously.

Ambiguously Gay: In "The Thirteen Watches", Harkness, while he can't bring himself to say so, clearly believes that his brother Ted and Ted's partner-in-crime Sam are also partners in other ways. They call each other "Sammy" and "Teddy" and Sam is so distraught about accidentally killing Ted that he commits suicide, but the truth is never revealed. (There's also a bit of Ambiguous Gender Identity; Ted insists he's only Disguised As Drag as part of the con, but his brother isn't convinced.)
