Like Koyel, the weapon is quite traditional, doesn't look like much, and is easily obtained by any peasant, but it is nonetheless dangerous if underestimated. Mort prefers a baseball bat. Like Mort himself, it's a distinctly crude, American weapon that can be obtained cheaply and without attracting too much attention. Perfect for criminal activity.
