Dance Moms is a Reality Television series that premiered on Lifetime in 2011. The entire series, consisting of eight seasons, is available to watch without an accountnote barring one especially controversial episode in season 2 on Lifetime's official website. Highlights, compilations and full episodes are also available on the show's YouTube channel. At its most basic level, the show revolves around the Junior Elite Competition Team of the Pittsburgh-originated Abby Lee Dance Company (headed by Abby Lee Miller), consisting of a group of young girls aged 6-15 who Miller is training to become professional dancers, as brought and looked after by their mothers (the titular "dance moms", akin to "soccer moms"). The main portion of the show's episodes has the team practicing for and traveling to weekly dance competitions, building up to Nationals (which is often what seasons end with).Of course, that's not what most come to watch. While watching the girls grow up and improve is a long-term aspect of the show's appeal, the lion's share of its success is attributed to the drama and conflict among the show's subjects (often created through less-than-ethical means on behalf of the producers), such that it's incredibly rare for an episode to go by without at least one shouting fight (or, occasionally, even a physical one). This drama comes from the combined factors of Miller's extremely strict and controversial teaching techniques, rivalries between mothers, ongoing tension with rival dance teams (namely Cathy Nesbitt-Stein and her Ohio-based Candy Apples Dance Center, who are practically presented as the show's antagonists), and personal problems. One early tagline for the show stated of Miller that "she makes stars, not friends" — and boy, was that ever true.As the show progressed, Miller moved her operations to Los Angeles, and more emphasis was put on the girls' burgeoning careers in music and acting following the show's success — but it became quite evident that real-life issues were present as well. Miller's behavior and treatment of the girls, already concerning to many at first, grew increasingly critical and intense such that official company departures from original team members on less than amicable terms became common, with some of the girls developing serious emotional problems. Later seasons were also affected by Miller becoming prone to breakdowns and working through legal troublesnote In January 2014, dance mom Kelly Hyland was arrested on charges of assaulting Miller; her child Paige would file a separate, ultimately dismissed lawsuit towards Miller that October. In 2010, she filed for bankruptcy and owed more than $400,000 in taxes. In 2014, numerous lawsuits were thrown her way from former team members. In 2015, she was indicted for fraud, concealment of bankruptcy assets, and false bankruptcy declarations for making a secret bank account to hide income. She was eventually sentenced on May 9, 2017 to a year and one day in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release. which grew so immense that she reportedly abandoned the moms and the elite dancers for three weeks before resigning from the show on March 26, 2017.However, in July 2018, despite mass rumors that the show had officially ended or that it would continue with a new head coach replacing Miller, she announced that she would be returning for an eighth season with an entirely new team of dancers now relocated to Pittsburgh, which ran from June to September 2019.Eventually, this extensive time period of close calls regarding the show's livelihood would come to a head in June 2020, when numerous mothers came forward with allegations of Miller exhibiting racist behavior towards their children. Lifetime officially severed ties with her shortly after, effectively ending Dance Moms for good, or at the very least erasing chances of Miller returning if a ninth season is ordered. On November 1, 2023, Lifetime announced a reunion special titled Dance Moms Reunion. Scheduled to premiere in 2024, the reunion will feature original ALDC members Brooke and Paige Hyland, Chloe Lukasiak and Kendall Vertes, as well as later additions Kalani Hilliker and JoJo Siwa, alongside their respective mothers (excluding Chloe's mother Christi). The show's popularity helped its starring girls achieve success in mainstream areas such as clothing, music, and acting, and also inspired a number of (generally short-lived) spin-off series: Dance Moms Miami (2012) - A series taking place in Miami, centering around a new dance studio led by two male instructors but generally following the same formula of the original series. Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition (2012-13) - A dance competition series where 12 girls and boys compete for $100,000 and a scholarship to Joffrey Ballet Academy. Abby's Studio Rescue (2014) - A Kitchen Nightmares/Extreme Makeover: Home Edition-esque series where Abby helps struggling dance studios across the country. Raising Asia (2014) - A reality series based on Asia Monet Ray, a contestant on the first season of AUDC who was then invited by Abby to join the ALDC in season 3 of Dance Moms. Dance Mums with Jennifer Ellison (2014-15) - A British version of the show that aired for two seasons on Lifetime UK, with Abby making an appearance in the series premiere. The JoJo and BowBow Show Show (2018-19) - A Web Animation series created by Nickelodeon based on JoJo Siwa, a contestant on the second season of AUDC who later became a part of the ALDC during seasons 5-6 of Dance Moms. Abby's Virtual Dance-Off - A dance competition announced in April 2020 that was cancelled following the aforementioned controversy of June 2020.

Darker and Edgier | |
Dance Moms / int_14beeefd | comment |
Darker and Edgier: Many of the dances are fun and cute, but Abby can veer into very dark territory. Notable examples are: Where Have All the Children Gone - A spoken word piece where the dancers disappear from stage one by one. The Last Text - All but one of the dancers die in a car accident. I See the Kite Flying - The sequel to Where Have All the Children Gone?. In the number, all the dancers are mental patients. Runaways - A routine about children and guns in which one of the dancers is accidentally shot and killed. Disappear - A solo that Maddie performed when she was just 8 years old in which an abused little girl commits suicide by drowning herself in a river. Taken - A routine about a special girl (Maddie) that the other girls want to be like, but when they realize they can't be like her, they try to bring her down to their level. They succeed in the end. Even though the dance isn't all that explicitly dark, it's the story that it conveys that creates its grim edge. Amber Alert - A routine based around child abduction, as the name implies. It ends with Maddie finding Mackenzie dead, killed by her abductors.

Tempting Fate: When Paige keeps insisting that she shows everyone her standing back tuck, Abby finally obliges...only for Paige to break her foot on the landing. The fact that the floor she broke her foot on was of solid concrete probably had something to do with it. In one episode in season five, Holly notes that Abby's been gone for quite some time and hopes that she's gotten herself together by the time she returns. Cut to Abby walking in with no makeup and undone hair while holding a Burger King soda cup.

Dance Moms / int_18f2b2b | comment |
Hypocritical Heartwarming: All of the moms and Abby are known to criticize one another and the girls but when someone outside the group does it they will all rally and defend one another. In one noticeable example a mother at an open call audition criticizes Paige's a la seconde turns. Abby immediately gets angry and tells Paige to go up against the girl. Paige wins and the girl and her mom leave in disgrace. Christi hits the point home by telling the mother, "Abby can talk about her dancers but no one else can."

Aborted Arc: In "It All Ends Here", Maddie and Mackenzie's dad threatened he'd do whatever he could to get them out of the studio. It was never mentioned again after that episode. In season 4, they tried setting up a rivalry between Payton and Brooke which fizzled out after a couple episodes. Another one involving Payton is in season the 5th episode of season 2, when she and Leslie "left" the studio. Leslie took her to "audition" for Candy Apples, and it was set up as if they were leaving the studio for good. A few episodes later they were brought back as a guest, as if it didn't even happen. One involving Jill was that Christi and Kelly were going to investigate into Jill's background.

Sadist Teacher: Abby is strict, but mostly reserves her screaming for the mothers, and isn't in fact especially harsh as dance (gymnastics, skating, etc) coaches go. The mothers, on the other hand, tend to overreact just a bit to any implication their daughter is not a star.... Of course, some of her Villain Protagonist actions (as written below) definitely show this. She yells at Chloe and Nia for choking on their routines, but as soon as Maddie forgets her routine, Abby runs out of the room crying.

In one episode, Abby has gone through everyone at Pyramid except for the top, and there's no left but Payton. (She and Leslie look pretty smug, reasonably.) Abby then reveals who it is...and it's Brooke, who just got back from cheerleading. Early-Installment Weirdness
Dance Moms / int_4f4372e9 | comment |
Early-Installment Weirdness: The first season, for a variety of reasons. In the earliest episodes, the Pyramid was presented with the pictures pasted on a chalkboard instead of the mirror wall, and was in the middle of the room. The girls were also seated on the floor instead of standing. Pyramid also wasn't as suspenseful or important in the first season. Starting in the second season it became a crucial part of the show, and Maddie was slightly less likely to be on top. Sometimes the girls would have their mothers or sisters accompany them for the interviews, even if they didn't say or really do anything. The girls were a lot more conceited-sounding as well. In the early seasons, there was obvious fake applause during the dances. They also showed the girls doing activities like going out for ice cream, in breaks between their busy rehearsal schedules. They didn't show anything like that again until the middle of season 3, when they went ice skating. Abby even sided with the mothers in some cases in season 1, most notably when Cathy left a competition early and they had to wait a few more hours for the group dance. And another time Abby and Christi of all people agreed that Cathy using the same solo music Chloe was, was wrong.

The Smurfette Principle: Inverted. Justice (in the original series) and Lucas (in the spin-off series) are both treated as "special" because they are both male competitive dancers. In season 3, Cathy replaces her team with a new team, made entirely of males. (Though in episode 18, she does use a girl, however briefly). So far, they have gone against Abby's girls four times, and won against them three of those times.

Age-Inappropriate Dress: As mentioned in an episode where the girls received NO awards for their 'barely-there' costumes. Arguably the outfits the girls wear to practice in as well - most of the time, they wear crop-tops and booty shorts. In the spin-off series, the girl who wears the shortest top is the oldest girl, Jessie, even though she's technically the only one of the group (except maybe Sammi) who actually needs to wear a shirt... And what about the infamous "topless showgirls" dance? The clothing was picked out to give the effect that they were naked. Unsurprisingly, the episode is unavailable online and on DVD.

What Were You Thinking?
Dance Moms / int_8687f945 | comment |
What Were You Thinking?: When Jill takes the stage in a tango, Christi and Melissa show up to present her with a crown and a bouquet. Abby doesn't take the situation very lightly, as she describes her feelings for the situation in one word: "Idiots." Another example, to a lesser extent, is in season one when ALL of the dance moms (including Cathy) take the stage with a dance number, and Cathy decides to give herself an on-the-spot solo part. Abby also doesn't take it too lightly from backstage. In one instance, Melissa ends up running across the stage in front of the audience and even addressing the audience. Abby doesn't find it amusing.

Laser-Guided Karma: In one episode, Christy gets into an argument with Abby and it escalates to the point where Christy insults the studio and calls Abby garbage. Abby kicks Sarah off the team immediately afterwards. The trope gets briefly discussed by Christi when she talks about how Jill arrives late to the competition after being on Christi's ass all week. "Karma's a bitch, Jill." From what we've seen of season 5 so far, it seems like everything Abby has built up is beginning to crash down. Her team is rebelling against her, people are leaving the team for good, not to mention that she still has to keep the company (or what's left of it) afloat.

Stereotype: Discussed In-Universe; in season 2, Abby makes a group dance based around bullying which originally has Nia cast as the bully. Kalani wears one in "Suicide Hotline". Used in "Your Dream Will Be My Dream", though only Brooke's character is the one who dies. All the girls wear different white outfits in "Gone Too Soon". Brooke wore one for her "Anne Frank" solo. Maddie wears several for her solos such as "Disappear" (her character commits suicide), in "Angel" (to honor her late grandmother), in "Showing You My Heart" (to honor Abby's late dog, Broadway Baby) and again in "Lizzie Borden" (self explanatory) Subverted in "Amber Alert" where the girls wear white and blue dresses, but only Mackenzie's character dies.

Epic Fail | |
Dance Moms / int_b4eff8a8 | comment |
Epic Fail: In one episode, Abby is so afraid of losing to studio Bleu that she decides to take Mackenzie out of the team and enter into higher age divension (expecting Studio Bleu to compete in the Junior division). Minutes before the competition, she learns that studio Bleu also moved into higher age division. If Abby left Mackenzie in the team, the girls would be safe in Junior division instead of losing to studio Bleu. Moms are understandably furious while Abby blames...Mackenzie (claiming she took out Mackenzie because of her crying during the lessons.) Season 5 kicked off with Abby being pressured down by the weight of mama drama, shaping up the dance team, and dealing with the legal matter from her scuffle with Kelly in the previous season. So what should she do? Why, go to Los Angeles, of course, where the competition is much fiercer and requires even more work to compete against!

Shout-Out | |
Dance Moms / int_c75df49a | comment |
Shout-Out: You might be able to notice an Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition poster in select episodes. In season two, there was a dance with three girlsnote Brooke, Chloe, Maddie and a cute vampire boy. Take a WILD guess what this is a shout-out to. The dance is even called "Twilight", no less. When the moms were having a sit-in for Kelly* refusing to leave the spot that they were in (by all of their cars), and even refusing to talk to Abby or look her in the eye when she talked to them, Christi compares it to the T-rex scene from Jurassic Park. Cathy once said "Whoville called, they want their nose back" to insult Christi. In season two, there was a group dance called "The Huntress" inspired by The Hunger Games. If you play The Sims 3, you might be able to recognize the music used in this number. The season 3 trailer was made as a shoutout to Flashdance, even using "She's a Maniac" as BGM and ending with Abby reenacting the famous water scene...only to have the moms get the water dumped on them. In similar roots, the promo for the next season was made as a reference to a-Ha's "Take on Me" video. One season 4 episode is called "Another One Bites the Dust". One season 5 episode is called "99 Problems But A Mom Ain't One". From that same episode, the group dance was titled "The Seven Dancers" and had each girl play a different dwarf/dancer. See Rule of Seven above. A two-parter episode in season 5 was named "Wild Wild West Coast, Parts 1 and 2". Jojo did a solo in season 5 called "Prom Queen" that was a reference to Carrie (1976); she was even doused from head to toe in blood, although it wasn't nearly as much as Carrie. At one point in this video, Christi says that every Friday night, Abby hands the moms a roll of toilet paper, a square tissue, and a sequin, and requests that they MacGyver up a costume for their kids.

Screw This, I'm Outta Here: In the "Playing Favorites" special, Christi leaves immediately after realizing that she's going to be left alone with Melissa and Abby. Season 6.5 was this for both the dancers and the moms in the junior division as a bigger rift formed between Abby and the moms, to the point where they take the girls to Erin Babbs. It took them 8 months and some space, but the junior moms and the dancers returned to the ALDC in Season 7. As of March 2017, Abby herself has left, to be replaced in the now last four episodes of Season 7 by Cheryl Burke of Dancing With The Stars fame. Abby has blamed a certain producer (whom she nicknamed Satan) for her Sanity Slippage, but it's more a case of Blatant Lies. The team did eventually walk out on Abby during her short return (with the exception of four other girls).

In one example, someone drops by the ALDC's competition room to give Abby a fruit bouquet, which she carelessly and purposely drops on the ground, causing fruits to spill. Jessalynn, the mother of Jojo. Not only is she one of the most manipulative of all of the moms, but she deliberately steals Kalani's script to use with Jojo and then lies to Kira's face when confronted about it, and a certain shot shows her smiling while Kendall suffers a panic attack. Most of the moms can also be embarrassing, insulting and sometimes down right nasty, but they do love their kids.

Technician Versus Performer
Dance Moms / int_ef3d1b57 | comment |
Technician Versus Performer: Possibly between Maddie and Chloe. Chloe is often seen as superior technically, but Maddie tends to get more solos because she is able to use her face (a.k.a, perform) better onstage. People have also said that Maddie dances like she attacks the music, while Chloe dances like the music's inside of her, and she's able to feel it better. Also can be seen in the case of Nia and Mackenzie - neither one is the best in the group, but it's obvious that they both love dancing, and are known for their hammy performances. Averted with Brooke - she's one of the strongest technically, but her lack of expression is what keeps her from getting solos often. Later girls on the team were Kendall Vertes, Sophia Lucia, Brynn Rumfallo (Technicians) vs. Jojo Siwa and Asia Monet Ray (Performers). Kalani Hiliker was both.

Youngest Child Wins: Mackenzie is the youngest of the ALDC roster and wins frequently. Asia, to that effect. If you want to include Maddie, then this trope gets extremely amplified.

Darkest Hour | |

Darkest Hour: Season 5 is really shaping up to be this, considering in the previous season two families of the junior elite team left, and Abby's getting extremely burned out and broken trying to keep the team balanced while dealing with the moms as well as the legal matter from her scuffle with Kelly, and has started taking this built-up anger out on the girls more. Hell, the promos even had "Abby's empire is falling" as a slogan.

From what we've seen of season 5 so far, it seems like everything Abby has built up is beginning to crash down. Her team is rebelling against her, people are leaving the team for good, not to mention that she still has to keep the company (or what's left of it) afloat.
