Mighty Med (2013-2015) is a Disney XD comedy show about two kids, Kaz (Bradley Steven Perry) and Oliver (Jake Short), that discover a secret hospital where the superheroes they've read about in comics for years are treated, and they get jobs there as their years of comic experience makes them Genre Savvy about the ailments the heroes face.In addition to the typical Disney XD Red Skies Crossover and Cross Through links, it had a direct Crossover with Lab Rats in summer 2015.After only two years, the series ended with the Season 2 finale airing September 2015. During the same month, it was also announced that both this series and Lab Rats will be replaced by a permanent crossover series of the two titled Lab Rats: Elite Force staring characters from both series (including Perry, Short, and Berelc).

Darker and Edgier: While the first season wasn't above mixing humour and whimsy, with high stakes and genuine danger. The second season takes it to a whole new level, while still remaining plenty of humour, the new Big Bad's are easily Knight of Cerebus, the stakes get noticeably higher and the events shift from simply danger of the week, to serious ongoing threats with potentially devastating consequences.

Mighty Med / int_21eb1793 | comment |
Muggles Do It Better: People without powers are called "normos" by the super community (with guys like Alan looking down on them.) Kaz and Oliver, who are normal, work as the hospital's two best doctors. This is taken up to eleven in Season 2, where Oliver defeated Skylar Storm using sheer cunning and knowledge of superheroes' weaknesses. This is quite noteworthy, because no superhero, not even Tecton, could defeat Skylar with raw power.

Smug Super | |
Mighty Med / int_4f88342a | comment |
Smug Super: Pretty much all of the superheroes have shades of this (even Skylar, who occasionally borders on outright vanity) while there all benevolent and not particularly outwardly arrogant, they never the less do know how powerful and successful they are and are not always above boasting. Comes back to bite them however in "Fantasy League for Heroes" where Kaz sets up a superhero version of Fantasy Football, and starts ranking them, they end up (with a bit of prompting, and a few lies from Kaz to increase their competiveness) becoming more focused on being ranked the highest than actually saving people, leading to them all trying to prevent he same disaster to get the points, meaning that there were no heroes around to prevent the next disaster. The only one who fits this near completely straight is Alan, and he's closer to Small Name, Big Ego, as he's considered quite weak in superhero terms, has accomplished near nothing and thinks he's better than everyone else.

Hammer and Sickle Removed for Your Protection: Downplayed in Atomic Blast From The Past. Kaz and Oliver time travel to what's surely the Cold War Era, but references to Soviets and Communists were merely subtle or implied. The Boys find an atomic battery to save Captain Atomic in their time period, but the Captain Atomic of the past suspected them of being spies for "the enemy country", a placeholder used for the Soviet Union. There's also a villain called "Red Scare", who is vaguely a communist villain.

"Fantastic Voyage" Plot: An envious Kaz uses a shrinking ray on Oliver as revenge for "stealing" his crush. It just so happens that a superhero with metallic skin has fallen ill and, as his skin makes x-rays and injections impossible, the only way to find out what's wrong is to send Oliver inside him. It turns out to be the superhero's arch-enemy, who had shrunken himself down to destroy the hero from the inside.

Red Scare: In Atomic Blast From The Past, this was greatly in effect when Kaz and Oliver time traveled to the 50s. Captain Atomic suspected them of being spies when he caught them trying to take an atomic battery to save his future self. There's even a super villain whom Captain Atomic takes out fittingly named "Red Scare". The way Horace wants to deal with said villain and Kaz and Oliver (i.e. De-arming them) is surely a Take That! to the attitudes towards those suspected of being communists during that era. However, no reference to the Soviet Union was made, as Kaz and Oliver were suspected of being spies for "the enemy country", which was used as a place holder for the Soviets.

Hope Spot: The episode Do You Want to Build a Lava Man? is this. The boys haven't run into Evil!Skylar since the dance, but without Horace's knowledge, they went to Caldera to ask Hapax the Elder to help them defeat the Annihilator. He gives them a test to prove their bravery, and it meant they had to overcome many dangers the volcanic planet had to offer. They managed to defeat a man-eating, lava breathing creature, get the MacGuffin, and barely make it out alive. The MacGuffin was just a medallion, but they've proven themselves enough for him to accompany them and defeat the villains. Hapax had a few more things to pack, Kaz and Oliver were ready to leave behind the dangers of Caldera, so things were all downhill from there. Just when everyone's about to leave, the Annihilator and Skylar ambush them. Cue an Oh, Crap! moment.

Masquerade Paradox | |
Mighty Med / int_c86552d6 | comment |
Masquerade Paradox: Supers are completely hidden from the public, and their exploits are hidden from the public and sold as comics — they've earned enough to fund a hospital. Apparently, people are too distracted by their phones. But before phones became commonly used? And why hide supers in the first place when it becomes so much harder? In the later Lab Rats/Mighty Med crossover show Lab Rats: Elite Force, the supers just say they're bionic since bionics became public knowledge in Lab Rats, like that's somehow easier to swallow.

Bait-and-Switch Boss: Throughout Season 1, Wallace and Clyde are set up as the Big Bads of that season, and most of the season focuses on them planning revenge on Horace Diaz and seek to recombine into Catastrophe, their true form. By the time the Season 1 finale kicks in, The Annihilator is the main threat of the special, while Catastrophe, who appeared in person, is demoted to being the secondary villain and ends up being defeated easily.

Hero Killer: A few crop up, for instance there is the Black Flacon, who outright targets heroes and puts multiple ones in the hospital, as well as coming very close to killing Skylar. Then there is the Annihilator, who it's implied has killed many heroes, and actually succeeds in killing Skylar.

Expy: The main characters seem to be like Zack and Cody. Alan appears to be a subtle expy of Lanny, who is a Butt-Monkey who wants nothing more than to dispose of the heroes. Unlike Lanny, he does not hide his hatred towards the main protagonists. Lizard Man (who is a hero) seems to be based off the Lizard (who is a villain) from Spider-Man, most particularly from The Amazing Spider-Man film. The Incapacitator from the Crossover is based off the Jamie Foxx version of Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Queen Hornet is obviously based off of Bumblebee from Teen Titans. Titanio has some similarities to Iron Man.
