The Book of Fiends is a series of monster-focused sourcebooks published by Green Ronin for Dungeons & Dragons. It explores the three Planes of Perdition, home to a startling array of fiends and other creatures that seek to corrupt, destroy and dominate the Material Plane and beyond, and also provides options for players to fight on behalf of these dark masters. The Book of Fiends was originally released for 3rd Edition as two softcovers, Legions of Hell (2001) detailing the Lawful Evil devils of Hell and Armies of the Abyss (2002) detailing the Chaotic Evil demons of the Abyss. A third book in the series, Hordes of Gehenna, was planned to explore the Neutral Evil daemons, but when 3.5 Edition was announced, the decision was made to release one hardcover, The Book of Fiends, compiling Hordes of Gehenna and updated versions of Legions of Hell and Armies of the Abyss, in 2003. To commemorate Green Ronin's 20th anniversary, in 2020, a crowdfunding campaign was held on Game On Tabletop for a 5th Edition version of The Book of Fiends, which was released in 2021.

Polluted Wasteland: Cerebulim is a glimpse of a technological future unfettered by moral or ethical limitations upon progress, where putrid, cloying smoke plagues the air, blotting out natural light and giving the layer an acidic smell.

Cessation of Existence: Ten years after entering Pleroma, souls are completely consumed by bliss—utterly annihilated and absorbed into the landscape of the Abyss. By the time souls enslaved to Pleromatic rapture realise their situation, they've long since surrendered the ability to do anything about it in exchange for ever-greater feelings of euphoria.

Our Demons Are Different: Fiends are creatures of utter wickedness and depravity, the worst such ones in the multiverse, who come from the three Planes of Perdition. Many different breeds of fiends exist; all exist to corrupt mortal souls and torment them forever in the afterlife.

Evil Tower of Ominousness: High towers thrust up from the Circle of Envy, their gray stones slick with the rain that perpetually falls from the sodden skies. Each is festooned with swiveling eyes that watch for intruders who might make off with treasures.

Behemoth Battle: According to the oldest prophecies and scriptures (which predate and predict the creation of Behemoth), when the mortal realm stands within days of utter destruction, Behemoth and Leviathan will meet in a final conflict to shake the foundation of the world and kill each other. Righteous mortals will be allowed to dine on their flesh forever in paradise.

Demon Lords and Archdevils: Demon princes command at least one third of the 666 recorded layers of the infinite Abyss. Princes in the Machiavellian sense, they answer to no superior. Over the millennia, several have conquered enough Abyssal real estate or swayed the affections of enough colleagues to claim dominion over all of demonkind. Each of Gehenna's internal circles is ruled by an exarch, though they have neither supreme authority nor any firm laws. Indeed, each seeks only to further their own aims and strengthen their circle by maintaining the strength of the sin they foster in the mortal world. Hell's political structure is feudal. Asmodeus is the King, and the eight archdevils, each of whom rules over a circle, are his chief vassals. Each lord maintains a court populated by a bewildering array of dukes, counts, marquesses, barons, and so on.

Fire and Brimstone Hell: Smoke and heat dominate the Bloodpyre Fields. Volcanoes, lakes of fire and magma rivers create a cast common in many basic images of a tormented afterlife. Searing-hot winds blast the entire layer, crisping flesh from bone. Breathing is impossible without the assistance of magic or technology. A place of fire, smoke and endless suffering, the Fourth Circle comes closest to what mortals imagine Hell is like. Souls shriek from pools of liquid fire, while devils patrol the edges and shove would-be escapees back in to cook forever. Fumes from fiery lakes thicken the air with toxic smoke.

Enchanted Forest: In the woods of the Sixth Circle of Hell, the trees have pale bark, gnarled branches and sharp leaves that can lay open flesh with the lightest touch. Some grow from the bodies of the damned, rooting them in place and stretching their forms out of recognition. Other bodies hang from the branches, necks broken, faces purpled, limbs thrashing.

Forever War: Demons and devils have been fighting an interminable war for dominance in the planes. Each defeat merely spurs the losing side to redouble its efforts and resume the struggle for dominance. No victory or defeat is ever final. Many believe that the Lords of Good made a deal with the daemons to keep the war burning hot for all eternity. A Hell and Abyss at war are safer for the multiverse, the Lords of Good reasoned, and thus far it has proven true.

Unnaturally Looping Location: Souls sworn to Seere or captured by his agents believe that the Final Highway has an end and those who reach it pass Seere's test to achieve enlightenment and pass on to some sort of Abyssal paradise. In truth, the road extends for what seems an eternity before looping back upon its start (no one has ever made it so far), but Seere does nothing to disabuse his subjects of their lofty goals.
