In an age captivated by music, one dark violinist took the world by storm — Niccolo Paganini. He had a rumor that always followed him — a rumor that he had gained his talent through a contract with a demon. At the crossroads, he entered into a contract of blood with the demon Amduscias. Paganini would play one million songs of genius, and in exchange, his life would wither away.This musical first premiered in 2022, based on an earlier stage reading play written by Bun-O Fujisawa (author of Mars Red). Ambiguous Situation: This play is in love with ambiguity. First of all, what is the time frame? It gives the years that Paganini was born and died in real life, but Elisa died 20 years before him in real life, and in the play, she was going to see his concert on the last day of his life. Specifically, how old was Niccolo when he made the contract with Amduscias? How much time passes between that and when he leaves Genoa? How much time passes between that and when he meets Elisa and she becomes his patron? How much time passes between that and "Ancora", when he starts to have doubts? (At that point, does he really only have 462 songs left, or was that abstract/metaphorical?) And how much time between that and the end of the play? That last block of time feels longer than the time before he left Genoa, but he used up over 200,000 songs before leaving Genoa. What exactly is the punishment for breaking the contract? Amduscias says that some kind of calamity will ensue, but does he have control over what form that takes? He declares that Niccolo has broken it twice, and several times, he warns him against breaking it. He also seems to manipulate Niccolo into breaking it, in order to cause a "calamity" that he thinks will benefit Niccolo. Did Teresa die of natural causes, or was she killed by Amduscias as punishment for Niccolo's breaking the contract? Or was she killed automatically by the contract, without Amduscias having had to take any action of his own? In that case, when he sat next to her in Niccolo's concert, was he trying to protect Niccolo from breaking the contract, by distracting her, or by absorbing Niccolo's intention by having Teresa within his aura, so to speak? What kind of contract did Elisa Bonaparte make with Amduscias? Is it called off by Amduscias, cancelling payment? If not, what was the payment? | |

Dark Reprise: In act 1, Niccolo's early success with the violin is shown in the song "Gifted", sung by Teresa (Niccolo's mother) and Signor Costa, his violin teacher. After Niccolo makes the contract with Amduscias and performs with his devilish powers for the first time, they sing a reprise. Teresa is impressed, and thanks Signor Costa for his teaching, but Costa is scared, because he knows he never taught Niccolo any of those techniques. The crowd of nobles who watched the concert add another layer, proclaiming Niccolo's genius — the genius that Costa knew he didn't have. Within the song "Inquisition", in which Niccolo plays for the Archbishop in the church and breaks the contract, resulting in his banishment (which is what Amduscias wanted), Amduscias sings a darker version of the chorus of the title song, from the prologue. Teresa's Death Song is a duet between her and Niccolo, of Casa Nostalgia. After which, the chorus sings one of "Contract of Blood" as they surround and torment Niccolo, showing his beginning to have regrets. A small reversal — when Elisa first gets together with Niccolo, she sings "Trapped in that palace of lies, I finally found my truth." After she's sent away, she repeats the same line in "Hanarereba Hanareruhodo ni Ai", but now, it's "I thought I'd finally found my truth". In the confrontation between Niccolo and Amduscias in the final concert, when Niccolo plays "Casa Nostalgia" as his final song and Amduscias confronts him, declaring a breach of contract, it becomes a dark reprise of that song. Niccolo's Death Song is a subversion. When he first sang "Ancora", it was an expression of his fear of death, and regrets about entering into a contract with Amduscias. Now, he accepts it, and dies feeling that it was better this way. | |
