Everything Is Going to Be OK is a free desktop indie game for Mac and Windows, by developer Nathalie Lawhead (alias "alienmelon"), taking the form of a glitched computer desktop. The player can click on any one of a number of files, which lead to various interactive scenarios. Each "file" explores some aspect of the creator's psyche and experiences, in semi-autobiographical abstract form. Depressing and anxiety-inducing themes are displayed, such as social isolation, depression, suicide and even sexual assault. Many scenarios involve a cute creature in great pain pleading for help, with other creatures standing nearby reassuring them that everything's going to be OK. This is all presented in a collage/glitch art aesthetic, with bright colors and cheerful high-pitched voice acting. The tone is darkly comedic, and for the most part heavily ironic. Throughout the game, hidden text sections can be found, where the creator talks frankly about the challenges of being a survivor of sexual assault, and of nobody believing her. She asks that if you know somebody with depression, listen to them. Don't offer useless stock advice, if all they want is some sympathy. What Do You Mean, It Wasn't Made on Drugs?: The game's soundtrack, graphics, and several pages in particular(page 1 for example) are a startlingly accurate representation of a "bad trip" after taking a large dose of lsd. (trigger warning) The entire game seems to exist in that stage where you finally lose sight of reality, the world and its inhabitants have morphed into terrifying malevolent nightmares, all those reassurances from friends and soothing music sound distorted and false, and you keep telling yourself that everything's fine and you are in control, but it doesn't help because you know that you're lying. | |
