Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby, also known as Hypno's Lullaby, is a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod created by Banbuds and released on Halloween of 2021. It takes its basis from a number of particularly well-known Pokémon Creepypastas, most notably Hypno's Lullaby.Boyfriend has gone missing in the dead of night, and Girlfriend is worried sick about him. While out on a search for him, she ends up encountering a strange figure on a bloody pathway trying to lure her into its woods. There's probably nothing ominous or threatening about that...V1 can be downloaded on GameBanana here. Due to false accusations surrounding Banbuds at the time, the mod was canned in October 2022, right before V2's planned release date. However, a nearly finished build of V2 can be downloaded here.On October 14th 2023, Banbuds would return to the internet and the mod would be confirmed to be uncancelled and back in development. Not to be confused with Hypno's Lullaby, which this mod is based on.Song list:Story ModeHypno's Lullaby:Safety Lullaby (Girlfriend vs. Hypno)note Legacy versionLeft Unchecked (Girlfriend vs. Hypno)note Legacy versionLost Cause (Girlfriend vs. Boyfriend and Hypno)Lost Silver:Frostbite (Gold vs. Red)Insomnia (Silver vs. Boyfriend)Monochrome (Boyfriend vs. Gold)note Legacy versionMissingno:Missingno (Boyfriend vs. Missingno.)note Legacy versionBrimstone (Boyfriend and Missingno vs. Buried Alive, Gengar, Muk and White Hand)Free PlayAmusia (DISABLED vs. Ponyta)Dissension (Steven vs. Mike)Purin (Jigglypuff vs. Pico)Death Toll (Hell Bell and Beelze vs. Dawn and Boyfriend)Isotope (Glitchy Red vs. Boyfriend)Bygone Purpose (Hypno and Alexis)Pasta Night (Hypno, Lord X and MX)note The player can choose to play as any one of the three, while the other two characters will be the opponentsShinto (Shinto vs. Grey)Shitno (Shinto vs. Grey)

Acceptable Breaks from Canon: Quite a few of Hypno's Pokédex entries mention that it can put its victims to sleep in 3 seconds. Even in Hell difficulty, Hypno's pendulum doesn't work that quickly, as to be a bit more lenient on the player. Neither of Gold's or Missingno's Hell mode additions really make sense (Hypno's Hypno Pendulum appears in Monochrome without a source, and Missingno was removed when Unown was introduced), but they still make their levels harder than ever. DISABLED is completely unable to use Sing, but while she does miss all of her notes to reference this, she still has vocals for the song. Of course, it wouldn't be nearly as good of a song if one half was just silent.

Adaptational Villainy: This occurs with Hypno due to being based on Hypno's Lullaby. In the regular series, Hypno are a species of Pokémon that range from neutral to downright helpful, with them nearly never using its sleep inducing powers to harm people (only feasting on their dreams) and only one known incident of a child kidnapping. Here, Hypno is a single entity that actively hunts and successfully kidnaps Boyfriend and Girlfriend For the Evulz. In canon and even in Lost Silver, the Unown are simply mysterious creatures that look like letters of the alphabet, and are almost never depicted as malicious. Here, they puppeteer Gold's limbless corpse and even tear him apart despite his plea to stop.

Mythology Gag
Friday Night Funkin' Lullaby (Video Game) / int_26ac510e
comment
Mythology Gag: As to be expected with a Friday Night Funkin’ Creepypasta mod, Lullaby is loaded with references to its characters’ source materials. "Safety Lullaby" as a whole is a slightly edited version of TrainerDerek's Hypno's Lullaby, a song set to the tune of Lavender Town based on Hypno's infamous Pokémon FireRed Pokédex entry. During the course of Hypno's songs, one has a rare chance of seeing the White Hand mentioned in Lavender Town behind Girlfriend, specifically based on its rotting, person-sized design from the creepypasta Buried Alive. Hypno's voice in "Left Unchecked" was created using parts of Hypno's cry in the regular games. Occasionally during "Monochrome", a mutilated Celebi will pop out of the shadows and use Perish Song to reduce your max health. This is in reference to the original Pokémon Lost Silver fic when Gold is forced into a battle where his only Pokémon is a Celebi with half of its sprite and no moves other than Perish Song. Additionally, this occurs exactly three times throughout the song, referencing how Perish Song lasts 3 turns before fainting any affected Pokémon. A good number of Gold's possible Unown messages hold some meaning, whether it be from the original Pokémon or Pokémon Lost Silver: "IM DEAD", "HE DIED", "DYING", and "LEAVE HURRY" are all messages given by Unown in Gold's party at various parts of the fanfic. The latter also references Hurry, the Cyndaquil in Gold's first part before its death. "GOLD" and "SILVER" are the names of the games Gold originates from, as well as himself and his rival in the manga adaptations. "PERISH SONG" and "NIGHTMARE" are Pokémon moves that get used at some point in the pasta; the former by Celebi during the battle against Red and the latter by Gold's living self in the pasta's final moments. "GOODBYE" was the last word said by Gold's living self before the pasta's end. "CELEBI DIED" references the battle against Red, with Gold's Celebi being claimed as dead after it succumbs to Perish Song. "FERALIGATR" is the evolved form of one of the starter Pokémon in the original Pokémon Gold and Silver, and likely a reference to the 'Hidden' route of the game version of Lost Silver, in which Silver is encountered with an eyeless, finless Feraligatr on his team, which, true to form, he has alongside him in "Insomnia". "WHO ARE YOU KID?", which appears in the latter half of the song in V2, is also a reference to the Lost Silver game's Hidden Route, with each of the gym leaders sporting Unown of these letters, and coming together to say this phrase if interacted with from bottom-to-top at the end of that section. Missingno is fought right on the coast of an isolated island with Missingno floating above the water, referencing where Missingno is found in Pokémon Red and Blue (surfing along the eastern coast of Cinnabar Island). The way you unlock "Missingno" is by repeatedly pressing up and down until you're prompted to play it, referencing how you must surf up and down repeatedly to find Missingno. All of Missingno's poses references its possible forms; its left and up poses feature the skeletal Kabutops and Aerodactyl respectively, its right pose features the ghost seen in Lavender Tower, and its down pose has it take on the color scheme it had in Pokémon Yellow. Missingno gains a number of Unown codes in Hell mode, many of which contain references to Missingno's origin: "BIRD" references Missingno's Bird/Normal typing, the former of which was a scrapped type that was later replaced by Flying. "GOLDUCK" and "CUBONE" are two of the commonly-seen Pokémon that can be encountered when using the Missingno glitch. "AERODACTYL", "KABUTOPS", and "GHOST" reference Missingno's three other possible forms. "PAY DAY" and "BIND" are two of the moves Missingno knows at base in Pokémon Yellow, the other being Water Gun. Playing "Missingno" with Botplay on, which typically gives the player messages meant to demean them, results in the sentence "mew was under the truck", an Urban Legend of Zelda of Mew being found under a truck in an out of the way harbor around the S.S Anne. "Frostbite" ends with an auditory recreation of the climactic scene of the story, with Red using Destiny Bond on Blake and the game emitting an ear-piercing screech. It also adds in a reference to the fan-film created by Mibevan, with the screeching being accompanied by a final image of Red's Pikachu grinning at the camera. Buried Alive is fought in the Pokémon Tower, which is where it was supposed to be fought in Pokémon Red and Green. Buried Alive’s three Pokémon (Gengar, Muk and White Hand) all originate from its original creepypasta. White Hand also shapeshifts into a version of Girlfriend with a hole in her face, referencing how White Hand is capable of using Transform in the most popular fan game based around the pasta. Buried Alive’s game over is a direct reference to his original creepypasta (which states that losing to Buried Alive would cause a game over screen that the Game Boy is stuck on afterwards), with Buried Alive stating “Finally, Fresh Meat and eating Boyfriend. Glitchy Red's monologue near the end of Isotope is a near direct copy from the spiel he made in his original creepypasta, the only difference being that "Blue Haired Kid" was originally "Brown-eyed kid", referring to how Red's design got replaced in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. DISABLED faces off against a wild Ponyta in "Amusia", just like in her original creepypasta. The cutscene at the end of "Amusia" is a direct recreation of the climactic scene of the original story, with the wild Ponyta fleeing and DISABLED begging for the player to “give [her] [their] sing. Ponyta’s idle in Amusia is a recreation of its sprite in Pokémon Black and White. Dissension is a complete recreation of the final scene of the original Strangled Red, with Steven breaking into his brother’s room and strangling him. The Game Over scene also shows Miki, Steven’s Charizard, dead in the background. Purin would have turned to face the player during the reversed section of the song, making it resemble the original image. "Death Toll" ends up directly recreating a scene from the original creepypasta, with Beelze giving the player (Boyfriend) a contract, which once signed, causes the player character (Dawn) to become more similar to, and eventually the same as, Boyfriend.

Uncertain Doom: We don't exactly know WHAT happens to Grey once the Shitno song is finished, since the cutscene after it appears to be unfinished, with only the audio playing out. One thing is for sure, it was unpleasant. We eventually learn that both him AND Shinto were meant to die due to the latter screwing up the game so badly, it causes the console to shut down because of sprite overload.

Gold is one of the most gruesome opponents seen in an FNF mod, with a graphically dismembered body, copious Body Horror, with some unnerving things to say and a terrifying Jump Scare to boot... yet he's also canonically the victim of whatever happened in Pokémon Lost Silver, having done nothing to deserve his fate. There are also a number of signs that he's still the same Kid Hero even in death, such as him enlisting the help of his Pokémon, cracking immature jokes with the Unown messages, and simply leaving the battle if Boyfriend loses or wins instead of attacking him.

Adapted Out: Gold uses most of the Pokémon he owns in Pokémon Lost Silver, but noticeably never utilizes Hurry the Cyndaquil or Please! the Typhlosion from the hidden route. This could've been due to both of their deaths early on in the fic and game, but he also uses the similarly-deceased Away the Celebi. That said, he does uses a Typhlosion in "Frostbite" and since Gold and Blake, the protagonist of Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver, are the same person in the mod that Typhlosion is Please!. Though that still leaves what happened to Hurry out in the open, but given how in Lost Silver Hurry hatches from its egg after Please! dies, and in the mod Please! and Blake died around the same time (Please! to the cold, Blake to Freakachu), it's likely that Hurry never hatched in the mod.

Unintentionally Unwinnable: The cancelled build of V2 has a feature where pressing 1 allows you to skip the song you're playing if you just want to make progress without needing to replay songs. Unfortunately for those that want to beat "Monochrome", one of the possible Unown messages is 'BOO!', which requires pressing Shift + 1 to type the exclamation point. Therefore, getting this message means you either die by not typing out the message or skip the song without being able to finish it. In-universe example, thanks to the negligence of the bootleg's devs, Shinto's difficulty modifier is so high she's impossible to catch. One can only catch her with hacks, but that's a pretty poor choice considering how mad she gets when caught.

Ambiguous Ending: "Lost Cause" ends with Hypno's head lunging at Girlfriend, only for the game to take the player to a screen telling them they've unlocked the Shop, Pokedex and Freeplay menus. It's never revealed if Girlfriend and Boyfriend managed to escape Hypno, or if Hypno successfully hypnotised Girlfriend for good. The ambiguity was ultimately dropped in this QNA, in which Banbuds revealed that Hypno killed both BF and GF.

Death by Adaptation: Hypno has already kidnapped Boyfriend before the main story of the mod, and it's been confirmed by Word of God that "Left Unchecked" ends with Girlfriend receiving the same fate. Zig-Zagged in the case of Boyfriend, as he's still present for "Monochrome" and "Missingno", but these appear to be unrelated to Hypno's plot (though Gold himself is also dead, so Boyfriend's survival may not factor into the encounter).

Downer Ending: According to Word of God in this Twitter post, Girlfriend is kidnapped by Hypno after "Left Unchecked". V2 subverts this, with Girlfriend breaking free of her hypnosis and finding Boyfriend successfully, only making Hypno even MORE infuriated with her persistence and going more One-Winged Angel than before... which then became double subverted when Banbuds revealed in a QNA that Hypno kills both BF and GF after "Lost Cause".

Body Horror: After "Safety Lullaby", Hypno undergoes a horrific, offscreen transformation. The end result is Hypno's violently twitching head levitating above his discarded body, leaving its intestines hanging below it. By the time "Lost Cause" happens, it's deteriorated into just a pile of guts with an arm and a head. In "Monochrome", Gold's arms and legs have been torn off, his eyeless sockets bleed some sort of black substance, and almost all of his poses have him stretching a Ghostly Gape to an absurd degree. This is most present in his up pose, which also reveals his giant heart inside of his jaw. He's in only a slightly better state in "Frostbite", where he's missing one arm, one eye, and coughs up blood in his right pose. Red and his Pokemon, on the other hand, are even worse off, with several body parts torn off, all of them missing both eyes, and a few even having their stomachs ripped open. Silver in "Insomnia" is mostly okay, but appears to have skin covering his mouth. His Feraligatr has it over its eyes instead, and violently rips them open when it awakens. Purin has some kind of body horror in every pose in its eponymous song, from removing its eyes and caking its face with blood to opening its face to reveal several human skulls.

Dark Is Not Evil: Gold is one of the most gruesome opponents seen in an FNF mod, with a graphically dismembered body, copious Body Horror, with some unnerving things to say and a terrifying Jump Scare to boot... yet he's also canonically the victim of whatever happened in Pokémon Lost Silver, having done nothing to deserve his fate. There are also a number of signs that he's still the same Kid Hero even in death, such as him enlisting the help of his Pokémon, cracking immature jokes with the Unown messages, and simply leaving the battle if Boyfriend loses or wins instead of attacking him. As frightening as DISABLED looks both in and out of universe, she isn't a malicious entity, but has just gone off the deep end struggling to use any of her moves.

Central Theme: The Lost Silver week revolves around the futility of one's actions and how, in the end, nothing will change. "Frostbite" takes place on a freezing mountain, and even if Blake could survive Freakachu, he's already on the verge of dying to the cold. While it isn't displayed in the final build, "Insomnia" always ends with Feralisleep killing Boyfriend regardless of if he beats Silver or not. "Monochrome" either ends with Gold returning to the darkness or you beating Gold, neither of which achieves anything. Every song has the same outcome regardless of if you win, befitting the overall theme of the original Lost Silver creepypasta, stating that your accomplishments will be forgotten and swept up in the sands of time.

Camera Perspective Switch: Nearly every song in the mod does away with the usual perspective of FNF. "Monochrome", "Insomnia", and "Shinto" take place in the first person. "Lost Cause", "Isotope", "Frostbite", "Brimstone", "Amusia", "Death Toll", and "Shitno" all utilize a diagonal perspective, mimicking that of Pokemon battles in the original series. "Dissension" changes perspectives several times throughout the song, but most of it uses a first-person POV with both characters having only their heads visible.

Interface Screw: Hypno tries to hypnotize Girlfriend by swinging his pendulum to the beat of the song, making the screen go redder and redder unless the spacebar is pressed along the same beat. If the hypnosis gets too far along, it's Game Over. He will also regularly use Psyshock to speed the process up. In "Monochrome", Gold will cover the screen with various phrases spelled out in Unown, preventing the player from hitting any notes until the phrase is typed out in full. During the latter half of the song, he'll also jumpscare the player repeatedly by flashing an image onscreen. In Hell difficulty, the frequency of these messages is raised, and Hypno's pendulum will also be present. The second half of "Missingno" will have the strum lines occasionally glitch all over the screen, moving to completely random places to disorient the player, even happening as the player is singing near the end. This is taken even further in Hell difficulty, where the arrows can rotate and appear in even wilder places and the window itself can move. Hell difficulty also adds in Gold's Unown messages, but with a different set of possible messages. In "Bygone Purpose", every arrow is set to a different scroll speed. Thankfully, unlike another song with this mechanic, it's a rather slow song otherwise. If you aren't playing as MX in "Pasta Night", he'll occasionally hit a POW block when it's not his turn, causing the player's notes to fall to the opposite end of the screen. If you aren't playing as Hypno, you have to deal with the pendulum. You can invoke a Challenge Run by choosing to play as Lord X, which features both screws.

Knight of Cerebus: Within the mod itself, Missingno. is an inverted example, compared to Hypno and Gold at least, it doesn't really bring anything remotely scary to the table in its song, doesn't really utilize jumpscares and its secret song is regularly catchy rather than unsettlingly catchy. A bit of a justified case since it's the odd one out in the mod considering it didn't really come from a Pokémon creepypasta, rather from a glitch in Pokémon Red and Blue. It keeps this position in the 2.0 build, as the only songs nearly as light hearted are "Shinto" and (ironically) "Pasta Night".

This Hypno? An Eldritch Abomination that Mind Rapes people to death and successfully kidnaps a powerful demon like Girlfriend. In Red and Blue, while Missingno had extremely high physical attack, it was a Glass Cannon that didn't have the speed nor moveset to utilize it. Here it uses its Glitch Entity powers to their fullest, moving the notes all around the screen, especially on Hell mode.

Animal Gender-Bender: The Hypno present in this mod is male and has a very deep voice to match, but its neck fur is long and straight, a trait present only in female Hypno (males' neck fur is shorter and scruffier in comparison).

Hypno in the original Pokémon games wasn't too scary to look at - a little creepy at worst - and its powers were limited to basic Psychic Powers and hypnosis. Here, it's become a lot larger and its head is almost tearing itself from its neck in half of its animations, and the form it takes in "Left Unchecked" is rife with Body Horror, featuring its levitating head ripped off of its body and Phlegmings made from its own flesh. Interestingly, a pair of teaser images posted to Banbud's twitter indicates that Hypno was once closer to its canon counterpart and changed into what it is now.

Adaptational Abomination: Hypno in the original Pokémon games wasn't too scary to look at - a little creepy at worst - and its powers were limited to basic Psychic Powers and hypnosis. In Pokémon Lost Silver, Gold's sprite limits him to having his arms and legs neatly removed and Tears of Blood coming from his eyes, but otherwise he looked more or less the same as he did in life. The mod takes this a step further by instead having his limbs being violently torn from his body (justifiable, as this is quite a common depiction of Gold’s condition among fan works related to the original story), his eyes missing from their sockets entirely, and adding a giant visible heart and the ability to stretch his face beyond normal possibility. It gets worse in the cancelled build, with the second half of the song tearing his head off his body and leaving it under the possession of numerous Unowns. In Pokémon Lost Silver, the sprite of Gold's Celebi was simply cut in half with no gore. Its depiction in the mod shows all of its organs. A downplayed example, but in the Hidden Route of the Lost Silver fangame, Silver looks more or less the same as normal, albeit with his eyes missing. In "Insomnia", his face is perpetually framed in shadow with his eyes hidden, if they are present at all, and most of his poses when singing seem to imply that he's in quite a heavy state of pain. Hell Bell was just a normal shiny Bronzong in its origin pasta, albeit with abnormal stats. In "Death Toll", its body is a faded dark purple, its face has red glowing eyes and large human teeth, and its arms are much longer and end in sets of claws. The image Purin is based on simply had black eyes dripping blood, a far cry from the hideous Body Horror it pulls off in this mod. DISABLED in the original creepypasta was simply a Wigglytuff who, thanks to circumstances implied to be abuse from her prior owner, couldn't use any moves. In this mod, she can sing, but doing so makes her break on a metaphysical level and glitch apart by the end of the song, a far cry from simply not being able to muster out a move.

Gameplay and Story Integration: In "Monochrome", Celebi's Maximum HP Reduction attack is the result of its using Perish Song. It also only uses the move three times, as Perish Song causes the Pokémon that uses it to faint after three turns. In "Missingno", the titular opponent causes the strum lines to glitch out all over the screen — fitting for the infamous Game-Breaking Bug. In "Amusia", DISABLED does not hit any of her notes, referencing the fact that she is unable to Sing. The Life Drain mechanics in "Frostbite" and "Dissension" are representative of Gold slowly succumbing to hypothermia and Steven choking the life out of Mike, respectively.

Suddenly Speaking: Inverted in the case of Hypno. "Safety Lullaby" has him singing in perfect English, while "Left Unchecked" gives him regular vocals made from the original Pokemon's cry.

Creepy Child: With how terrifying Undead Child Gold looks and acts in "Monochrome", it can be hard to remember that he's 11 years old.

One-Winged Angel: After "Safety Lullaby", Hypno focuses all of its hypnotic energy into its head, causing it to detach from its body—connected only by strings of flesh—and it to become much more powerful and monstrous. "Lost Cause" has him deteriorate into a pile of flesh, with his head disturbingly still intact. After getting caught and accusing the Player of cheating, Shinto goes from a normal sprite to an Uncanny Valley 3D Model, clashing with the two songs’ 16 to 32 bit art style.

Evil Is Petty: The creators of the in-universe bootleg Shinto is from decided to put the soul of a dead child into their game... because they were too lazy to program their protagonist.
