Bloodless Carnage

comment
Bloodless Carnage: Played straight during Cuphead's week - fitting for a game based on The Golden Age of Animation, the violence is cartoony, and while Boyfriend and Mugman get injured, neither bleed. Subverted during Sans' week: Frisk's body is reduced to a bloody pulp in the pacifist route, while in the genocide route, Boyfriend is noticeably beaten up with blood dripping down his head, while Sans gets slashed in the chest and bleeds before falling over. Subverted and Played for Drama during Ink Bendy's week, where he savagely beats Boyfriend, at one point slamming him into a wall and smearing his blood while dragging him across it.

Negated Moment of Awesome: Sammy, in the cutscene before "Terrible Sin", whips out his signature axe and says a Pre-Asskicking One-Liner, ready to chop up Boyfriend... only for the mysterious red barrier that appeared in Sans' week to completely No-Sell his swing, much to his startled confusion.

Unexpected Gameplay Change: Throughout "Burning in Hell", the setting will change to the battle box from Undertale's battle system. During Sans' singing in these segments, he'll summon Gaster Blasters that'll fire lasers at BF's soul, requiring you to move with the arrow keys to dodge until it's BF's turn to sing.

Multiple Endings

comment
Multiple Endings: True to Sans' home game, his week has two different endings depending on the player's actions during "Sansational"; The pacifist ending, which happens when you don't attack Sans, has the skeleton avoid dying to Frisk before taking them out and parting with Boyfriend on a positive note, asking the latter to come visit again sometime. The genocide ending, which happens when you attack Sans at least three times, leads to Boyfriend being possessed by Chara, and Sans dispatching both of them after the final song before Frisk lands a fatal hit, only for Sans to pay them back before dying, leaving the injured Boyfriend to be taken away.

In "Devil's Gambit", The Devil is slumped over motionless and bloodied on his throne, with a Scare Chord taken from the base game's "Winter Horrorland" implying he's dead. Cuphead's state of surging power and speed implies he's taken on The Devil's powers for himself rather than burning the Soul Contracts and washing his hands of the entire affair.

The Cameo: In the game's intro, one of the worlds the Boyfriend falls to for a split-second is Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, with a very familiar pirate standing behind him and laughing before the Boyfriend is taken to another world. During the first lull in "Last Reel" we can see Jack show up behind Sammy before seeing Bendy and running off, referencing JzBoy's Stickman vs Bendy and The Ink Machine series. Gaster is barely visible in the hole in the window in the background of "Bad Time".

Easy-Mode Mockery: "Nightmare Run" cannot be played outside of Hard difficulty. Playing songs without mechanics will stop achievements from being able to be obtained for the current play session. Turning them off for "Burning in Hell" in particular actually has Sans call Boyfriend and the player out on it, believing they needed a handicap to beat him.

Mythology Gag
Indie Cross (Video Game) / int_26ac510e
comment
Mythology Gag: The result of failing the song for each respective character mimics/homages the Game Over for their game in question. For Cuphead's week: Cuphead's first song is titled "Snake Eyes", a term to describe two dice both rolling a one, the lowest possible roll and typically the worst outcome in terms of gambling, a major theme in Cuphead. His songs also start with Cuphead's famous boss intro. By the latter half of "Knockout", the fight-ending "A KNOCKOUT!" plays after Cuphead accidentally shoots Mugman with an EX attack. For Sans’s week: "Whoopee" is named after the whoopee cushion he uses to greet the player via handshake to establish his laid-back trickster nature. The opening of the song overwhelms the player with an opening bone attack to dodge and the insta-kill bone notes — the sudden difficulty of which reflects how Sans starts his boss fight: opening with his strongest attack before the player could get a turn. Certain parts of "Burning in Hell" change the whole setting to the familiar battle box with Sans above and Boyfriend within the box, all rendered in the same black and white all characters undergo in battles, complete with him siccing Gaster Blasters on BF's Soul. Sans also sends blue bone and orange bone arrows that'll result in a Game Over if you hit the blue arrows and fail to hit the orange arrows, much like the blue and orange attacks from the origin game that can be bypassed by holding still and moving respectively. Resetting after a loss against Sans has him say different opening banter, typically counting your deaths up until eleven, ripped straight from the dialogue of Undertale. "Sansational" is a pun, referencing his affinity for them. Nightmare Sans's song, "Bad Time", samples the music used in the fight with Photoshop Flowey and Undyne the Undying. For the Ink Demon's week: The first cutscene starts off with a first person perspective of the ink tunnel, a place the player goes to after dying in BatIM, which they must reach the light at the end to respawn. The song intros for all the Bendy songs show title cards that match up to the chapter title screens from the original game. Like with Cuphead's songs, these replace the usual countdown at the beginning of songs. BF catches the Ink Demon's attention (read: ire) by smacking a Bendy cutout with his mic. It's shown in BatIM's third chapter, Rise & Fall, that he doesn't like it when people abuse his cutouts. The song "Nightmare Run" is named after Bendy and the Ink Machine's mobile game spinoff, Bendy in Nightmare Run. The Ink Machine itself is featured in one of this song's many backgrounds, too. The pre-song instructions for "Nightmare Run" simply reads "RUN", mirroring Chapter 2's final objective being "RUN AWAY." Nightmare Bendy's background is the area in front of the True Ink Machine. The bonus song "Freaky Machine" is a wholesale reference to DAGames's BatIM songs. The opponent is a cartoonish Bendy based on his depiction in "Gospel of Dismay", with the stage from that sound being the backdrop, while the song itself is a FNF cover remix of two of DA Games's songs: "Build Our Machine" in the first half and "Instruments of Cyanide" in the latter, during which the curtains part and an off-screen projector shows the various clips from Bendy's cartoons that we see in Chapter 5. Also, a few notes of "Mr. Crooked" are heard at the very end of the song. During the first few seconds of "Burning in Hell" and the last few seconds of "Bad Time", you can hear birds chirping, referencing Sans's infamous Pre-Asskicking One-Liner before his boss battle in Undertale.

Mellow Fellow: Sans, being the one opponent who Boyfriend's encounter with could end peacefully, in contrast to the other opponents Cuphead and Bendy. Aside from the first verse of "Whoopee",note which is largely a Mythology Gag and possibly a Secret Test of Character — and even then, he tones it down afterwards his week as a whole is generally chill if you avoid attacking him.

Flipping the Bird: Cuphead flips the bird at the viewer in the ending card for "Knockout" should Boyfriend get a game over. In addition to jumpscaring the player, Piper of the Butcher Gang will also flip them off in "Last Reel". During "Nightmare Run", Boyfriend will turn back towards Bendy and raise his middle finger at him. Nightmare Bendy flips Boyfriend off in his right pose, albeit he switches between poses so fast one isn't going to notice during gameplay.

Indie Cross (Video Game) / int_3d699462
comment
Curb-Stomp Battle: Boyfriend does well enough engaging his foes in rap battles, his natural element, and his microphone acts as a handy deterrent for Cuphead and the Butcher Gang. In an actual fight with them? Not so much, with the only reason he survives for the most part is because of getting conveniently portal-ed out of there at the last minute: Cuphead's Finger Gun arsenal proves too much for Boyfriend to handle, with the former's ultimate attack prompting Boyfriend to retreat. Even when he tries to counter Cuphead's attack with a mic toss, Cuphead just grabs the mic to pull him into a close ranged Mega Blast to knock him out. The encounter with Sans can end peacefully without a battle, but worse case scenario, Sans does what he does best to stop them. Even when possessed by Chara, his attempt at grabbing the knife ends with him forcibly moved by Sans' Blue Soul manipulation and finished off by a circle formation of Gaster Blasters. With Ink Bendy, whether given a chance to run or not, the end result is the same: BF getting caught and Ink Bendy beating him to a bloody pulp.

Musical Nod: "Technicolor Tussle" uses short melodies from "Floral Fury" and "Clip Joint Calamity". "One Hell of a Time" and "Die House" appear in "Knockout". The former is also used in the instrumental for "Satanic Funkin'". "Megalovania" is everywhere in Sans's week, naturally. "His Theme" is also in a few of the instrumentals. "Whoopee" is a remix of the chill "sans". "Sansational" makes frequent use of the base game's "Roses", as well as a bit of "Megalo Strike Back". "Final Stretch" briefly features a melody from "Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans". "Burning in Hell" leads with a melody from "It's Raining Somewhere Else", and later uses "Another Medium" and "Undertale". "Bad to the Bone" and "Bonedoggle" both take after "Bonetrousle". "Devil's Gambit" features parts from "Monochrome". "Bad Time" prominently features "Battle Against a True Hero" in its instrumental, and in a bit of its vocals. "His Theme" also briefly appears in the vocals. Bendy doesn't have as much music to draw from, but there is a nod to "Hellclown" in "Nightmare Run", as well as "Zavodila".

Stylistic Suck: "Hello Huggy" makes liberal use of Art-Style Clash to this effect. The Neighbor and Huggy Wuggy are mostly hand-drawn outside of their down poses, which are a cropped mugshot and a plush render respectively, and the spectators in the background are of Banban, Jumbo Josh, and Opila depicted as 3D models straight of their home game. The one-shot song against Baldi naturally invokes the art-style of his home game, with Boyfriend also depicted as a fuzzy and grainy looking sprite.

Combat Pragmatist: All three main opponents, as well as the Devil and Sammy, have their own gimmicks to give them the upper hand over Boyfriend. Cuphead will occasionally shoot unavoidable Peashooter shots at you, which can be stopped by attacking him, as well as firing the Mega Blast and Jumbo Roundabout EX attacks at BF, requiring you to dodge, twice in the case of the latter. Sans will on occasion during his turns summon a row of bones to damage Boyfriend's health, which can be dodged with the space bar. During "Burning in Hell", the battle box segment of "Sansational" and the beginning of "Whoopie", Sans will use his own blue and orange bone arrows that'll One-Hit Kill if failed to avoid and hit respectively. He'll also attempt to blast BF's Soul with Gaster Blasters during "Burning in Hell"'s Bullet Board moments. Bendy has the ability to push back Boyfriend's health throughout his songs up until Boyfriend only has a small sliver left. That in addition to the ink arrows, which will obscure most of the screen if accidentally hit, means you're at a constant disadvantage. Not to mention the Butcher Gang constantly trying to kill you in "Last Reel", though that technically may not be intentional on Bendy's part. The Devil has his purple Imp mooks walk in from the left or right side of the screen, dealing quite a bit of Collision Damage if they aren't dodged, on top of the Devil pushing your health back. Double Subverted: Sammy's song, "Ritual", is entirely gimmick-less until the very end, where he'll throw his axe at Boyfriend for a One-Hit Kill if not dodged.

Gameplay and Story Segregation: After "Knockout", Cuphead will fire an EX shot at Boyfriend, followed by a super attack and then another EX — this isn't possible in Cuphead, as both attacks rely on the same meter, and using a super fully drains it. Getting a Game Over against the Bendy cutout in the first half of "Imminent Demise" still results in the same Smash to Black sequence as if the Ink Demon attacked, despite him not even knowing Boyfriend exists at that point.

Interface Screw: Hitting ink notes will not only damage Boyfriend, but also coat the edges of the screen in black ink. It also stacks, resulting in the screen further getting coated to obscure the view of the arrows. Getting hit by the Butcher Gang in "Last Reel" and "Despair" also stacks the aforementioned screen coating. All of this mirrors the health system in Bendy and the Ink Machine. Nearing the end of "Last Reel", Fisher will walk in front of the camera to not just simply distract you, but also obscure your view of the chart. As of the 1.5 update, this was changed so that he doesn't block the UI anymore.

"Whoopee" is named after the whoopee cushion he uses to greet the player via handshake to establish his laid-back trickster nature. What If?: The Nightmare songs are all scenarios where each of the characters gained immense power from how they handled a situation in their home game. The unofficial interquel showcases how these scenarios came to be, with the end results not being pretty. In "Bad Time", Sans is trembling with rage and moves with blinding speeds, showing what he's like when he's fully dedicated to attacking a threat instead of trying to convince them to stop by nudging them into giving up. In "DESPAIR", The Ink Demon looks far less malformed, and the Ink Machine's reveal part of the way into the fight implies that he's found a way to complete his body with it instead of being stopped by the time loop that Joey Drew set it and Henry into.

The difficulty for each opponent is even listed as "DEVILISH", "GENOCIDAL", and "DEMONIC" respectively. comment
Jumpscare: During some of the songs revolving around Bendy and the Ink Machine ("Terrible Sin", "Last Reel", and "Ritual"), cardboard cutouts of Bendy will suddenly pop up in front of the screen, complete with sound cue, potentially causing the player to either miss some notes or accidentally hit ink notes. Piper will jump out midway through "Last Reel" to startle the player while also flipping them off. Nightmare Bendy initially seems to leave at the end of "Despair", only to return and reach for the player. All three Nightmares will attack the player if you open the charting menu during their songs, and their attack afterwards will soft-lock the game.

Mooks: The Butcher Gang constantly harasses Boyfriend throughout "Last Reel" and "Despair", existing only to try and whale on him while he fights them off. The Devil sics the Purple Demons from his boss fight on BF throughout "Satanic Funkin'".

"Hello Huggy" makes liberal use of Art-Style Clash to this effect. The Neighbor and Huggy Wuggy are mostly hand-drawn outside of their down poses, which are a cropped mugshot and a plush render respectively, and the spectators in the background are of Banban, Jumbo Josh, and Opila depicted as 3D models straight of their home game.

Rage Breaking Point: Out of all the opponents Boyfriend faces in this mod, the Ink Demon takes his loss the hardest; with him convulsing with anger after "Last Reel" by almost transforming into Beast Bendy as a result, and later chasing after Boyfriend in "Nightmare Run". Promptly lampshaded as it happens, with Boyfriend thinking of Whitty going Ballistic as he witnesses the Ink Demon spasm out of control.

Taking You with Me: Chara manages to successfully deal a lethal hit to Sans after being preoccupied with the possessed Boyfriend. But unfortunately for them, Sans returned the favour afterwards with a row of bones to impale them, freeing Boyfriend from possession in the process.

Bait-and-Switch Boss: The Ink Demon's week starts with Boyfriend facing a cardboard cutout in a rap battle, with the cutout doing nothing while Boyfriend sings the notes of the piano instrumental. It all changes when Boyfriend decides to attack the cutout — alerting the Ink Demon to his whereabouts, getting into the real opponent of the week. The song timer for "Imminent Demise" even makes it seem like the song was about to end after the instruments fade out.

The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: The end of Nightmare Bendy's song has him reach for the player after initially faking them out by leaving. Played for Laughs. Losing in GOSE makes the screen cut to black for a few seconds, before the Goose appears in a similar manner to the beginning of "Monochrome" (complete with the foreboding tune, to boot), looking right at the screen and showing a fake IP address before force-crashing the game. Attempting to edit the charts of the Nightmare songs results in the opponent suddenly appearing and attacking, cutting the screen to a glitch/static effect.

Gameplay and Story Integration: Cuphead uses his finger gun bullet powers throughout his songs, two specifically; the Peashooter, which Cuphead only ever uses when not singing, and the Chaser, which deals less damage but is used when singing. The Peashooter requires aiming, which is pretty hard to achieve when also moving about and singing, while the Chaser mitigates that and just homes in on the target. The backdrop of "Nightmare Run" is the Ink Demon chasing Boyfriend; as Boyfriend's health lowers, the Ink Demon gets closer to him, the reverse being true when Boyfriend regains health.
