Monster Slider (モンスタースライダー) is a cartoony horror-themed Puzzle Combat Game by DATT Japan for the Sega Saturn. It was released on March 28, 1997 in Japan only and is the first of a series of two games both titled Monster Slider. The other was released later in 1997 for the arcade and represents an Alternate Continuity.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })As a Falling Blocks game, Monster Slider presents the player with a field and blocks in six colors: red, yellow, green, purple, blue, and cyan. Three of any given color need to be touching to be eliminated from the field. The signature gameplay feature that Monster Slider brings in is that the bottom of the field is tilted. The player can change the direction of the tilt as they please and this will cause the blocks to slide towards the new lowest point. Timely tilts can be very useful in creating chain eliminations. Eliminations are good for keeping one's field empty, scoring points, and thwarting the opponent. Every time an elimination occurs, a candle is generated. Candles can be spent to summon skulls from the opponent's field's ceiling. Skulls are blocks that do fall down, but are not affected by the tilt of the field. They can only be eliminated by being next to color blocks that get eliminated. A row of skulls will just keep sitting there. It's game over when the blocks and skulls fill up the field.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })The protagonist Nina is the character one traverses story mode with, but in two-player mode and endless mode, eleven of the twelve antagonists are also selectable. Each character has a unique special ability that can only be activated by eliminating a rapidly color-changing special block. Doing so generates a crystal and much like candles, crystals can be spent as the user deems it strategically sound. One crystal pays for one usage of the character's special ability. As an example, Nina's Holy Prayer plants a holy cross in her opponent's field. A holy cross can never be made to move from where it is planted and like a skull can only be eliminated when color blocks adjacent to it are eliminated. The only character not ever available to the player is Claudia, whose Bloody Lawn causes roses to sprout in the opponent's fields, which raise the floor or lower the ceiling and thus make it harder to keep the field from filling up.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_3'); })The plot concerns Dracula's abduction of Claudia, a beautiful woman from a village nearby his castle. The villagers try to save her, but are driven back by Dracula's monstrous servants. Claudia's younger sister, however, is divinely gifted a holy cross and with this weapon sets out to save Claudia herself. Nina battles her way from the cemetery to a waterway that leads into a cave system underneath Dracula's castle, then up into the castle and further up into the clocktower until she reaches Dracula's residential chambers. His defeat doesn't quite reunite Nina with Claudia, because the truth is that Claudia and Dracula are in love and by now married. Claudia is furious that Nina beat up her husband and demands retribution by means of combat. Nina defeats her too and finally gets the full story. It leaves her both exasperated at Claudia's behavior and just a teensy jealous about her solid marriage.A demo disc titled Monster Slider Taikenban (モンスタースライダー体験版) is known to exist, but its publication history is uncertain.

Cute Witch: One of Dracula's henchmen is a young witch who lacks any of the classical witch attributes except for a magic wand. She's perky and pragmatically dedicated to the comfortable life she gets to live doing odd jobs for her boss. Along with the gillman, she guards the waterway leading into the cave system beneath Dracula's castle. Her special ability is Bind Spell, which temporarily prevents her opponent from moving falling blocks horizontally.

Verbal Tic | |
Monster Slider (Sega Saturn) (Video Game) / int_26d1f65f | comment |
Verbal Tic: The wolfman ends all his sentences with "wan", the Japanese equivalent of "woof". Extra comedy is derived from the fact that the tic occurs while he tries to convince Nina that he is indeed the wolfman and not the dogman. The golem is a bodybuilder with a habit of randomly saying "chuus" ("チュース"), a derivation of the greeting "ちゅーっす" with a sprinkling of the German parting "tschüß". The informal greeting has both athletic and masculine connotations and was popularized a few years before 1997 by the manga Slam Dunk. Additionally, nearly every other thing the golem says ends on "-ssu", which creates informal politeness again with athletic and masculine connotations.

Green Thumb: Claudia's special ability is Bloody Lawn, which causes roses to sprout in her opponent's field. Each rose causes the floor to raise a certain height or the ceiling to come down. The effect is only undone by the roses being eliminated by lining up three blocks of the same color right next to them. How Crodia is able to do this is not explained. The special abilities of the other characters come from them being monsters or wielding weapons, while Claudia goes into battle barehanded and she's ostensibly human.

Tongue-Out Insult: Nina twice sticks her tongue out against a monster, which is a sign of restraint on her part given how little the whole bunch gives her to respect. The first time she sticks out her tongue, it's against the skeleton when he's exasperated she'd dare disrespect the #1 of an okama bar called The Skeleton. She points out that she has no idea where that even is. The second time she sticks out her tongue, it's against the yeti who blames her for him getting lost because he got lost trying to set up an ambush for her. Camp Gay: The skeleton is a self-described okama and apparently the #1 of an okama bar called The Skeleton. The skeleton furthermore has a shrill voice and uses female speech patterns, foremost ending his sentences with "zamasu", and is depicted with a little heart in the credit sequence. Being an okama alone wouldn't necessarily mean he's gay, but in the ending Nina whines she'd like a relationship too, prompting all of the male monsters — but not the skeleton — to let her know they're single.

Secret Underground Passage: There is a route into and from Dracula's castle that goes through a cave system and follows a path outside along an underground river. It is not technically secret because both Nina and Dracula's servants know about it and use it, but it is an underground route that is not part of the castle's structure and where, as demonstrated by the yeti, you can get lost. Nina first battles the gillman and the witch at the waterway outside the caves and later battles the golem and the yeti inside the caves.

Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: One of Dracula's henchmen is a yeti with a long beard, who along with the golem guards the cave system underneath Dracula's castle. Unlike his colleagues, he can only grunt, but he's still perfectly understandable. His special ability is Blizzard Coffin, which temporarily freezes his opponent's blocks. The frozen blocks cannot be eliminated and don't slide from their place when the field gets tilted.

Mood Whiplash: The ghost knight presents himself as a lot more intimidating than his colleagues, speaking in a low, drawling voice and being one of few to threaten her with death. He does reveal that he too has a quirky side when Nina is not impressed, but sticks with the intimidating attitude. In battle, his special ability Nightmare summons the image of a skeletal ghost knight that looks quite a bit more gruesome than anything else in the game.

Significant Wardrobe Shift: In the opening cutscene, Claudia is depicted as wearing a red crop top, a short blue wrap skirt, pumps, and some jewelry. When she's encountered as the final boss, she's toned down the jewelry, exchanged the red crop top for a short red tube top with bat emblem, and gotten herself black boots and black two-piece gloves. The tougher look signifies that Claudia has exchanged her human village life for that of monster castle life.
