Neon Abyss is a roguelite action-platformer developed by Chinese studio Veewo Games and published by Team17 that was released on July 14, 2020 for the Play Station 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. You play as a new initiate of the "Grim Squad", a task force created by Hades to slay the New Gods, a pantheon of deities that are pastiches of pop culture fads, such as mobile videos, fast food and cryptocurrency. Its art style is very ostensibly inspired by a mixture of 1980s synthwave and neo-futuristic landscapes, and much like Enter the Gungeon, Rogue Legacy and Hades, allows you to collect currency to modify future runs by unlocking playable characters, items, vendors and secret rooms.

Awesome, but Impractical: The Popcorn item turns all of your gun's bullets into explosive rounds. This can be devastating against most mooks and bosses and negates the need to use bombs on rock walls and containers, but unless you've picked up the Big Daddy item which gives you explosion immunity, you'll likely be caught in the blast radius of your shots fairly often, especially if you have familiars your bullets can hit on accident such as the Vibrant Ball. Worse, there are a few guns that spawn their bullets at a distance and move them towards you - you do not want to use these guns with Popcorn!

Everybody Hates Hades: Averted, Hades is your completely trustworthy patron. If anything, it's inverted, since most of the Managers turn out to be likely Modernized Gods who betrayed their brother for the sake of ruling the modern world.

Cast from Hit Points

Cast from Hit Points: Filling a Violence meter up all the way unlocks a hidden room you can teleport to where you can exchange a Heart Container for a weapon or item. On the other hand, filling the Wisdom meter is much harder (especially since damaging a crystal device immediately turns all your Wisdom into Violence), but the hidden room unlocked that way averts the trope and gives you an item for free.

Not Completely Useless: One of the unlockables is "Crystal Devices", little devices that appear in the dungeon and cost one crystal to activate; like most Crystal items, they turn into Spike Devices if hit. They do absolutely nothing. However, spending crystals is the fastest way to build your Wisdom; alternatively, if you want a Violence room, damaging them works just as well as hitting a Crystal Door or Chest.

Charged Attack: Several guns charge their shot before firing. Some continue to fire while charged, but perform an extra effect when the charge is released (such as one that spawns Angry Sprites when fully charged and then fired).

Guide Dang It!

Guide Dang It!: So you're told to hunt the Managers. How do you get to them? You need to spawn Wisdom and Violence rooms. Each time you visit one, a mural in the back will fill. Once it's full, it spawns a Token of Ares or Athena (in Violence and Wisdom respectively). With one of these tokens in your possession, kill Zeus and you'll enter Stage 8. Finish this stage to fight the appropriate Manager. All the game tells you is to "enter the temple of Ares/Athena", without even telling you these are the Violence and Wisdom rooms, respectively. Averted when you unlock the Cursed bosses, where the game lays out exactly what you have to do to reach them.

Moving the Goalposts: How the game's progression works. Beat Argus, and on the next run you have to fight Hal. Beat Hal, and on the next run you have to fight Zeus. Beat Zeus, and you're asked to hunt down Ares and Athena. Beat those two, and you have to fight Cursed Zeus, Cursed Ares, and Cursed Athena. Oh, and except in the last case, each new tier requires you refight all the tiers before it to get to it!

Anti-Frustration Features: In a similar vein to Enter the Gungeon, certain rooms have teleport stones that can be used to quickly traverse around the current level without having to backtrack through several rooms. As in The Binding of Isaac, the treasure room on the first floor will always be unlocked, to accommodate for characters who don't start out with extra keys. You automatically melee enemies with your knife if you're in close enough proximity to them without having to press a different button, preventing frustrations with aiming in close-quarters. While some guns still have a cooldown reloading period before they can be used in short succession, all guns have Bottomless Magazines, giving players more leeway for missing shots.
