Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a mobile game Spin-Off of the highly-successful Octopath Traveler released for iOS and Android on the Japanese App Store on October 28th, 2020 by Square Enix. A worldwide English version was released on July 27, 2022.The game's events starts three years before the events of Octopath Traveler and revolve around a single-player Gacha RPG experience concerning three main influences: wealth, power, and fame. Each summonable character (and major plotline) is associated with one of the main influences and one of the starting eight classes from the original game. While the original "break and boost" mechanics return, battles now allow for eight playable characters to fight at once with combatants alternating between fighting and resting states. "Path Actions" also return and can be used similarly on NPCs as in the base game. Likewise, the land of Orsterra is available to travel and new settlements have been added in addition to the previous settlements explored in the original game.Differing from the original game, Champions of the Continent follows the adventure of The Chosen One; a random traveler who is exploring the land of Orsterra for personal reasons. As they continue along on their journey, they eventually come across an enigmatic entity who bequeaths them the Cleric God Ring and tasks the Chosen One with locating and retrieving the other God Rings across the land which have been stolen by mysterious forces. As it happens, three of the rings have landed themselves in the presence of three evil entities said to be the Champions of the Continent. Each conqueror being a master over one of their respective influences, the Chosen One sets out on their new quest to retrieve the remaining rings and put a stop to the Champions' ambitions before the power of the rings are forever lost to evil. The game also draws inspiration from Another Eden, borrowing that game's gacha mechanics, minimap design, Skill Scores and Perks system and focus on a single-player J/RPG experience for mobile devices. |

Darker and Edgier: Despite Octopath Traveler's take on tone and mood, this game has quite a bit more dark and complex themes. From Herminia torturing Tiziano by drugging him to the point where he can't even speak out of trauma, to Auguste poisoning his child to mentally manipulate his ex-lover into going insane, this game has its share of dark moments. |

Almost immediately after the above event, Jurgen reports back to Tytos and notices that his mother had been called into Tytos' manse. Jurgen begins to question why she's there and shouts in confusion at Tytos. Ignoring the questioning, Tytos asks whether Rinyuu's death had been confirmed to which Jurgen is unable to answer due to assuming she couldn't have survived the fall and not verifying her death. As a result, Tytos is displeased and asks whether Jurgen would like another chance to please him. Jurgen then responds that he would like another chance out of fear. In turn, Tytos declares that Jurgen's mistake to confirm a death shall be substituted. Of course, Tytos then issues the command to execute Jurgen's mother with Jurgen being Title Drop forced to watch in order to confirm her death. |

The Cameo: Several characters from the original game make cameo appearances in this game. In no particular order: Primrose, Simeon, Zeph, Yvon, Lucia, Archbishop Josef, Miles, Heathcote, Ashlan, Noelle, Therese and Helgenish appear canonically within the game's story. You can also summon Edea and Agnès from Bravely Default and Bravely Second alongside Elvis and Adelle from Bravely Default II. Some monsters from the Bravely series, notably the Chomper line and Rusalka, are fought as part of that event story. The second Bravely Default collab made Ringabel, Gloria, and Magnolia into playable units as well. Additionally, 2B, A2, and 9S from NieR: Automata can be summoned as travelers. Serenoa, Frederica, and Roland from Triangle Strategy appeared as summonable characters during a collaboration event. Oersted and Streibough from Live A Live are also present and can be summoned as travelers. Nier, Kainé, and Emil from Nier can be summoned as travelers, and Grimoire Weiss was added as a keeper. |

Related to the above, the Notice This items the player can find in towns will sometimes change to reflect the story progress, so the player can get a few gear materials from the newest dungeon over the previous one. The issue is that the game doesn't tell the player that at all, or which cities do so. For instance: The items found in Sufrataljah are for the dungeon located in the city, but after beating the "Bestower of Wealth" story, the items update to items from the Golden Palace instead, something not told to the player. |

Adaptation Expansion: This game elaborates on plot points briefly mentioned in the official guide. Orsa was established as the creator of world and the thirteen gods, as well as the namesake of Orsterra. This game reveals the existence of another god Finis who was her husband, as well as her ultimate fate. The war that orphaned Ophilia was the one waged between the kingdoms of Edoras and Riven 12 years before the start of this game that ended in the non aggression pact being signed. This game establishes the war was started from Pardis's ambitions, making him responsible for her village's destruction. Erhardt's village Grynd was destroyed by the invading southern clans, the same ones that Tytos would beat back as his claim to fame. The imperial conference to settle international disputes and arbitrated by the Church of the Sacred Flame makes its first appearance in the "Master of All" arc. |

Artifact of Power: The God Rings are a collection of rings that house a portion of the thirteen gods' powers inside of them. Each ring's power gives the wearer of said ring immense strength and slight magical capabilities to the point of being able to easily outmatch skilled warriors. The main plot revolves around recovering said rings after they were stolen from the Conquerors. The Chosen One also has one of these rings and is able to fight against the other ringbearers. The rings also have the power to transform the wearer into their "true form" (typically that of a grotesque monster) as shown by the ring-forms of the ringbearers. While in these forms, the wearer of the ring becomes significantly more powerful and deadly. Such a wearer can even give up their soul to the ring in order to gain even more power at the cost of their free will. |

Carrying the Antidote: When Auguste poisons his own son and himself, he secretly has another antidote on his person that he uses so that he won't succumb to the very same poison. Inverted in that the heroes do this to Tytos. While the Scarlet Elixir is dispersed over Emberglow, Velnorte distributes the antidote to the Chosen One and the rest of their party. He even taunts Tytos over his absence of an antidote when they square off. |

The Man Behind the Man: The Bestower of stories are focused around this trope, hence the name. Each of them focus on revealing who was behind the Master of villains and how they became able to achieve results. The only one not to have a follow-up is Master of Fame. For specifics: While Tytos is a formidable combatant in his own regards, he was being closely monitored on by Ceraphina the entire time since obtaining the Warrior God Rin]. This is because the Bestower of Fame gave Tytos the ring and was secretly using him to further their goal of reducing the Church of Sacred Flames' power to become a new god. Empress Tatloch was secretly using Pardis III and his empire to weaken the continent of Orsterra so that she could easily invade and conquer it for her own people. Oskha is the one who gave Herminia her God Ring as part of his plan to have her accumulate wealth then steal it afterwards to fund his revolution. |

Jury and Witness Tampering: In the Sovereign Assembly for determining Pardis III's guilt, both King Solon and Pardis III are witnesses and jurors to the vote. Considering how both are kings with diplomatic ties to the rest of the jurying monarchs, clear bias is established before the vote even begins. On top of that, Pardis III threatens Lord Governor Kanshas into voting for his innocence. To make things even worse, Gonska shows up disguised as King Riven and offers his own form of falsified testimony to sway the jurors' opinions. At the end of the judgment, Pardis III's tampering secures his state of innocence even though the actual vote (without any tampering) would have been four vs two in favor of Pardis III's guilt. |

Auguste is a playwright whose scripts are adored and used around Orsterra. In addition to that, he's also a beloved actor that many women fall for. As he is also referred to as the "Master of Fame", it stands to reason that he is one of, if not the most popular person in all of Orsterra. Many conversations have Auguste as the center topic, especially in his hometown of Theatropolis. |

Auguste is a Manipulative Bastard who toys with many of his victims in order to gain inspiration to write his plays. He's so good at this that he often acts several steps ahead of his intended victims and predicts their next likely move. This is shown in great detail when he's able to deceive the Chosen One under the persona of Schwartz and guide them along his concocted plot of drama to emotionally debilitate them. While gaslighting them for several days, Auguste also planned out several murders and scapegoats to take the fall over the Chosen One's adventures in Theatropolis. At the same time, he foresaw the Chosen One's every action and planned to eventually kill them in a final act of betrayal. Even further, Auguste is possibly out-manipulated by his repressed personality who wanted The Chosen One to kill him and set up the opportunity to do so. |

Bittersweet Ending: Most of the main story chapters end on a somewhat bittersweet note. In most cases, the Arc Villain is defeated before they can achieve their plans, but it comes at the cost of a lot of people dying, with the heroes having to find a way to restore things when the fighting ends. The "Master of All" story for example ends with Pardis defeated, and war between the major nations stopped, but many people have died, and the land is recovering from the damage brought by Pardis' ambitions. |

Would Hurt a Child: A partygoer in Herminia's manse outright says that Herminia would do this to further her wealth. Auguste asks Francesca if he can kill their child in order to gain "stimuli" for his play script. Immediately after that, he states that he was just joking, although it still terrifies both of them. Auguste does end up trying to sate his urge for "stimuli" by poisoning Mikhail and himself regardless. Francesca also applies to this due to her choice of giving the antidote to said poison to Auguste instead of her child, Mikhail. This is made even worse when Mikhail begins crying out for his mother to help him and she chooses not to listen. Not even Schwartz pointing out the Logical Fallacies of her actions convince her to aid her child. Moreover, the poison inflicted on Mikhail is described as incredibly painful and can kill within minutes. Francesca does nothing upon learning this. |

While it is theoretically able to solve upon first playthrough, the Chosen One is given a wide pool of suspects to choose from and few (if any) major clues or motives to deduce who is the true culprit. Forced to Watch: After finding Rinyuu in the mountains and stopping Jurgen from killing her, Jurgen rushes at Velnorte in a fit of rage in an attempt to shove him off of the nearby cliff face. While Velnorte is able to stand ground, the resulting struggle incidentally pushes Rinyuu off of the cliff. While in the struggle, Velnorte is forced to watch as the love of his life plummets to her death. In actuality, Rinyuu managed to survive the fall and was nursed back to health by a passing hunter, although Velnorte wouldn't come to know this for quite some time. |

Painful Transformation: When under the effects of the Scarlet Elixir, the ingester's body contorts into a Humanoid Abomination. Said transformation is incredibly painful and induces great agony on the transformer. This is made even worse by the fact that such a person also becomes insane when under the effects of the Scarlet Elixir and attacks anything while being semi-conscious of what they're doing. |

The Syndicate: Herminia's criminal underworld expands across the continent and is helmed in Valore where she resides. Due to her vast riches, she is able to assume control over the entire city of Valore and becomes its leader. While in charge of Valore, Herminia continues to grow her sphere of influence as she and her family become the richest people on Orsterra. Once she is killed, several key members of the family vie to be in charge of the entire syndicate by claiming how they're the new kingpins. This in turn causes the richest family members to assassinate one another to end up as the sole leader. It turns out that most of these assassinations were actually carried out by Oskha in an attempt to end Herminia's syndicate once and for all. |

We Hardly Knew Ye: Pathos and Apatheia are introduced as being a part of the tribe that protected the God Rings for centuries. They also are some of the only humans capable of sealing away the God Rings and their powers. As such, one would think they would have amazing combat abilities. Of course, you'd be wrong since they die almost immediately after you meet them by being murdered by Gonska. Though they are later revealed to be alive and are eventually joined by three other members of their tribe. |

comment |
The Reveal: In the Master of Fame storyline, Schwartz reveals that he's actually Auguste and has been manipulating the Chosen One from the very beginning as an elaborate plot to kill them. While posing as Schwartz, Auguste had his most devout follower pose as himself in order to not arouse suspicion for his would-be disappearance. This works so well that the Chosen One ends up killing the follower before Schwartz even reveals himself as the real Auguste and transforms into his ring form. However, at the end, it's revealed that Auguste actually wanted The Chosen One to kill him. In the Master of All plotline, three separate King Incognito moments happen in varying succession from one another. Trompeur turns out to be King Solon in disguise, El is secretly Princess Elrica, and Charles is actually Prince (later King) Richard. In the Bestower of Fame plotline, the leader of the Black Scarlet is none other than Phina, whose real name is Ceraphina. Furthermore, she is a cult leader who worships Galdera and has been trying to dismantle the Church of Sacred Flame from the inside out. |

Dead Person Impersonation: Gonska impersonates both Prime Minister Raum and King Riven. The former is done to dupe the real King Riven into believing he had enough military power to conquer Orsterra (which proves to be his undoing as he's unable to defend his castle from an Edoras siege). The latter is done to deceive the Sovereign Assembly into both believing King Riven is alive and tipping the balance of their votes in favor of Pardis III's innocence of invading Riven and Altinia. |

Guide Dang It! |
| Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (Video Game) / int_6ec989d8 |
comment |
Guide Dang It!: Completing story chapters can cause some NPCs to have more items via Path Actions that the player can get by doing Inquire Further. However, the game never indicates this is a thing, or what NPCs have new stuff from a look at the town on the map. If you've talked and interacted with every single person in a town, the game will still mark them as done even if they have items, so the new Path Actions can potentially go unnoticed because of that. A player would need to talk to every single NPC to check if they have anything new to even guess that something was changed. |

Taking the Fight Outside: When Cero reveals he's been sent to kill King Solon, the king requests that they take the fighting outside the tavern they're currently in. Bizarrely, Cero accepts this proposal and travels into the deserts of the Sunlands to fight with the king's entourage. Even more strangely, King Solon & his appointed guards don't make any attempts to run away or call out for help while they exit the tavern and march into the desert, but instead follow alongside the assassin sent to kill them. Albeit, this is somewhat justified in that King Solon was attempting a Scheherezade Gambit to get the Chosen One an opportunity to fight Cero whilst distracting Cero from his attention on the king. This ends up working as the Chosen One kills Cero before he's able to even attack the king as he planned to. Implied; When Bargello's gang fights Rosso, the background for the fight is that of the Woodlands even though the fight is taking place indoors. When the fight is over, everyone's still indoors and no mention of ever going outside is brought up. As such, it's presumed that they went outside for the fight and somehow made their way back indoors before it finished. |

Bodyguard Betrayal: Sonia ends up murdering Lord Taviani and several of his other bodyguards under orders from Herminia. She even attempts to assassinate Bargello and the rest of his gang before being killed by the Chosen One and Bargello. Inverted Trope. Pardis ends up stabbing General Mahrez and blames the murder on the Chosen One. In fact, Mahrez was loyal to a fault for Pardis and Princess Elrica and would gladly give up his life for either of them. It just so happened that he would do so in a way he didn't expect... |

Crutch Character: The eight launch 5 stars are generally really good units for when they came out, but tend to fall behind as newer units come out with either more unique abilities, marginally better stats, or have better skills by comparison. For example: Scarecrow is a really strong Hunter, but later Hunters tend to be more outright powerful due to better skills, or unique gameplay quirks. The .5 versions of 4 and 5 star units are this compared to their normal, full rarity version. They get access to most of their skill line, and at worst are stronger than the lower rarity units due to having their base level cap be the maximum level cap for the lower rarity. The downside is that they don't get access to their final skill tree, and their level is capped, meaning they Can't Catch Up. Unless the player rolls a full version of the unit, or gets the Sacred Seals needed to upgrade them, they'll eventually fall off due to being unable to get their full skills and stats. |

Humanoid Abomination: Those who ingest the Scarlet Elixir turn into these. While a person can delay the effects of turning into one through Heroic Willpower, they cannot avoid turning into one unless they die before the drug takes effect. The Black Scarlet also has an enhanced version of the Scarlet Elixir that turns an ingester into a stronger version of a version they would turn into with the normal drug, although the improved version allows the consumer to regain much more of their consciousness. A person's proportions change much more drastically when under the effects of this drug in contrast to the normal version. Such transformed beings are regularly used in the Black Scarlet's military. Some ringbearers' ring-forms cause them to turn into this. |

In the Master of Fame storyline, Schwartz reveals that he's actually Auguste and has been manipulating the Chosen One from the very beginning as an elaborate plot to kill them. |

In one of his letters, Isla mentions that he once stacked so many books that they fell over and almost crushed him, noting that he needs to organize the archives. | Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (Video Game) / int_a148f27b |

Living Legend: Many of the ringbearers are living legends of their own rights in their specific fields of influence and thus inspire many tales and conversations about them. Herminia is purported as the richest person in all of Orsterra and is practically the ruler of the town of Valore. She also happens to be the leader of her own mafia empire and commands great fear and respect among her subordinates. On top of that, she is heavily lusted after by many of the richest and most influential people across the land adding to her layers of fame. Tytos was once a legendary soldier in the Knights Ardante whose battle prowess made him renowned as a hero across the land of Orsterra. In particular, his efforts in rebuking the invading Southern Tribesmen were so effective that the Church of the Sacred Flame awarded Tytos with the leadership position over the fledgling town of Emberglow. His remarkable methods in converting convicted criminals into soldiers under his command was also viewed as revolutionary. Furthermore, his legend only continued to grow under his leadership of Emberglow as the townspeople "praised" Tytos for his every action. Even the Church of the Sacred Flame aided in spreading these legends as they used Tytos as a prime example for other members in the Knights Ardante to emulate. |

Variable Mix: The ringbearers each have multiple themes that transition into one another before battling them. The general pattern for the occurrence of these themes go: ringbearer's main theme, against ringbearer theme, and ringbearer's battle theme note However, only the against ringbearer theme and their battle theme have a direct transition into one another while their main theme is played before both. The ringbearer's main themes on occasion also change depending on the cutscene they're used in. If used in such a way, the audio will repeat the beginning of their song until a certain line of dialogue is displayed. Once the dialogue is displayed, the melody will progress further into the song and become more complex. In turn, the song then repeats in different sections depending on the current line of dialogue in the cutscenes. |

When Cero reveals he's been sent to kill King Solon, the king requests that they take the fighting outside the tavern they're currently in. |

Those who ingest the Scarlet Elixir turn into these. |

The twin archers competing in the Ri'tu Cup are given the epithet "Fujin and Raijin," referencing the brother gods of wind and thunder from Japanese Mythology. For example: If you have Primrose as your first unit during the "Master of Fame" story section where you run into Simeon, it will swap her out because she mentions having not seen him in years in the original game, and similarly if you do Lars' Traveler Story with Olberic as your first unit, it swaps him out, because a big part of Olberic's story is searching for Erhardt, who Lars' true identity. |

However, she was terribly lonely so she created another god, Finis, and together they begot 13 children, the gods of Orsterra. However, Orsa suffered Death by Childbirth after giving birth to their 13th child and Finis disappeared to parts unknown, forever mourning her death. As told in the main game, the 13 gods finished the creation of the world, Galdera rebelled against his siblings, and the rest is history. |

Twin Banter: Interestingly averted. Mandalino and Ramone are twin slaves who had survived the longest in Leopardi's slave arena. As a result of being enslaved and fighting others to the death for so long, they are incapable of speaking or reading. Thus, no twin banter is possible between the two. |

The Chessmaster |
| Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (Video Game) / int_d62dd556 |
comment |
The Chessmaster: Auguste is a Manipulative Bastard who toys with many of his victims in order to gain inspiration to write his plays. Empress Tatloch planted several of her own agents to monitor and supervise the actions of politicians across Orsterra and manipulate them into creating war and unrest across the land so that her army could easily infiltrate and conquer it. She also played a role in stealing the original God Rings and made plans to invade Orsterra ever since her spy Gonska convinced Pardis to go through his plans of world domination. She also treats her soldiers largely as pawns or sacrifices and cares very little for any of their well-being. |

Anti-Frustration Features: Rolling the 4 or 5 star version of a 3.5 or 4.5 character automatically upgrades any already obtained versions to that rarity. So if the player gets Sofia as a 4.5, then a 5 star, her 4.5 automatically becomes a 5 star, helping save the player any resources they may have been needing. On a related note, any time a character is upgraded via this process, any invested Guidestones are simply added on top of the existing level increase. So if you increase a 4.5's level by 3, they won't lose any investment. |

Famed In-Story: Tytos is regularly referred to as a hero by the people of Emberglow and is cherished by its townspeople for his past deeds to an almost fanatical extent. Of course, such legends of him are actually being enforced by the Scarlet Wings, although a great amount of these legends are being told out of the townspeople's volitions. Even more, after Tytos dies, the Church of the Sacred Flame concocts and spreads the story that Tytos sacrificed his life in his final moments in order to kill the evil Velnorte, even though he was killed by the Chosen One and their party. Of course, the Church's reputation would be ruined had the truth been spread, so history had been intentionally rewritten to prevent such an occurrence. |

Anti-Grinding: Zig-zagged. Most enemies give minimal amounts of EXP, so leveling up your characters by fighting them isn't practical. However, Caits give larger amounts of EXP, provided they don't run away, but the rate at which a player can encounter them is low (thankfully, Caits from advertisements or in Hunts will never flee). Additionally, the game doesn't do much to stop a player from grinding for materials to make weapons and armor. |

Wake-Up Call Boss |
| Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (Video Game) / int_f4a0408f |
comment |
Wake-Up Call Boss: Tytos, Auguste and Herminia's monstrous forms all qualify as being capable of curb-stomping an unprepared player who, so far, may have had ease with prior bosses. Each one has their own gimmick that can cripple an unprepared party, and each one can do a lot of damage in the meantime. Tytos the Thunderblade drains the BP of those in the front row and he can inflict Terror on your party, significantly reducing your ability to use Boosts. Breaking him will remove his BP drain from the front row, but he'll still inflict Terror with some of his attacks. Auguste the Prince of Thieves inflicts a death timer on characters in the front row, which will instantly kill them if it reaches zero and can only be slowed down by swapping rows. He also has a load of Status Effects he can hit your party with, and some of these effects prevent you from swapping rows (i.e. Sleep). He'll also shift his weaknesses every time he recovers from a Break. Breaking him will remove the death timer. Herminia the Huntress drains the SP of those in the front row. This is particularly nasty because SP recovery is slow and, at such an early point in the game, some abilities may cost up to a third of a character's maximum SP. Breaking her will remove the SP drain from the front row, but some of her attacks will still drain SP. |

Sacred Flames: The Church of the Sacred Flame has many ties to sacred fires and holy flames. Even their primary deity of worship, Aelfric the Flamebringer, is represented by a bright, blue flame. Things of worship such as Aelfric's Lanthorn and the First Flame also point towards the presence of divine fire. Sazantos can cause the Sacred Flame to materialize from him or around his weapons as a testament to his faith in Aelfric and as his position of Flameguard of the God Rings. As demonstrated on a Black Scarlet assassin, this flame is deadly. The God Ring the Chosen One wears glints with a strong blue flame whenever a fellow God Ring is nearby or whenever summoning another traveler. |

Because of this, Velnorte is misremembered as the sole villain of the events in Emberglow. When Pardis kills Mahrez, he blames the crime on The Chosen One and labels them as a criminal. Companion-Specific Sidequest: Each traveler has their own traveler story which is an optional Side Quest they task to the Chosen One. In order to access such stories, you must first have summoned the associated traveler. Each story unearths more of the related character's backstory or furthers their personality. |

The Dog Bites Back: Velnorte attempts to stop Tytos twice while working for him. First, he gives the Chosen One a letter to give to the Knights Ardante only for that plan to go up in flames. The second time, Velnorte successfully tricks Tytos and the Scarlet Wings into ingesting the impure Scarlet Elixir. This causes Tytos to go around murdering the Scarlet Wings as they transform under its effects alongside weakening Tytos enough into falling at the hands of the Chosen One. Jurgen also attempts to betray Tytos in a suicidal fit of rage, though he's unable to even get a hit in against him before being slain. |

Hopeless Boss Fight: Elrica's Duel Boss against King Pardis, despite her best efforts, is unable to be won. After breaking Pardis' Shield, he restores it to an unbreakable amount, and then promptly defeats Elrica. The battle against the horde of Edoras soldiers at Elrica's execution is unwinnable. While the player can win the first round, they are forced into fight after fight until getting enemies likely way higher than your party's current level, which usually results in the soldiers wiping your party out. If that doesn't happen, the battle automatically ends after a set number of turns. The battles against Empress Tatloch and the G'rohan soldiers in the prologue of Bestower of Power are unwinnable due to her constantly sacrificing her own soldiers to heal herself. |

Well-Intentioned Extremist: While Tytos pursues overwhelming power and not only uses drugs that make people monsters, his ultimate goal is to amass enough power to eliminate the Southern Tribes once and for all to protect Orsterra, who had previously attacked and caused alot of chaos in the land. |
