Project M EX REMIX, or PMEX REMIX for short, is a Game Mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the vein of the original Project M, building on each of its characters while adding many veterans from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate along with many, many new faces. In what can basically be considered the culmination of the Brawl modding scene over 12 years, PMEX REMIX features a whopping 116 fighters - that's 27 more than Ultimate's final count of 89 at the end of its DLC development in October 2021 - from across Nintendo's franchises and beyond, all while incorporating the in-depth competitive mechanics of Super Smash Bros. Melee. In short? It's the ultimate Super Smash Bros. jam session, bringing together the best character, stage and music mods from across the community into one enormous package. If Smash as a whole is the definitive Massive Multiplayer Crossover of video game history, REMIX is the definitive Massive Multiplayer Crossover of Brawl mods. The hack has proven stupendously popular, garnering over 214,156 downloads as of March 2024. The final PMEX REMIX update was version 0.95DX in March 2023. The trailer can be seen here, and the patch can be downloaded here. As the game was still in development, it's occasionally prone to freezing and some single-player modes don't work, but Vs. Matches work perfectly fine. Not all characters have a Final Smash, and Kirby's Copy Abilities have been removed altogether so they don't have to make them for new fighters. As of February 2024, development on PMEX REMIX has concluded due to a number of complicating factors, but most members of the dev team have shifted over to a new mod known as REX, which will pick up where PMEX REMIX left off with all of its existing content plus all the content that had been planned for future updates. The teaser trailer for REX can be seen here.

The Artifact
PMEX Remix (Video Game) / int_13d7a65e
comment
The Artifact: All veterans from Project M keep their largely Brawl-based animations and sound effects, which can seem a bit out of place next to veterans from later games. For example, prior to the 0.95 update, Pit retained his pre-Kid Icarus: Uprising moveset and portrayal by Lani Minella, leaving him a bit behind Palutena and Dark Pit; while he was later updated to his modern voice actor Antony Del Rio, he still maintained his Project M moveset. Marth and Roy once again only speak Japanese (unlike in Ultimate), but Fire Emblem newcomers Navarre and Lyn, who come from the same worlds, also only speak Japanese to keep consistency with them while all other Fire Emblem fighters speak English. The Event Match "A Skyworld Engagement", which is meant to be a duel between Pit and Dark Pit, still uses Pit's Dark Pit-themed Palette Swap to represent the latter character rather than Dark Pit himself.

Palette Swap: Coming from a line of Palette Swaps himself, Sub-Zero's alts are based on the other Mortal Kombat ninjas. Among Nu-13's colours taken straight from her home series, she naturally has Lambda-11 as an alternate colour in both her regular and unarmored costumes. She also carries over her Penny Polendina color from BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle for her regular and unarmored costumes as well. Some NPCs have different model swaps as well, such as Dyna Blade replacing the boss version of Ridley, a Super Team robot replacing the Assist Trophy version of Waluigi or a Multiplayer Shadow Android replacing the Assist Trophy version of Shadow.

Massive Multiplayer Crossover: To an even bigger extent in that there are over 100 playable characters, each with unique animations, sounds and movesets, even outstripping the final count for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 89. For context, 74 of the 89 released fighters for Ultimate have been programmed into the Brawl engine for this game.note The missing fighters are Villager, Mega Man (although X acts as his Spiritual Successor), Rosalina & Luma, Bowser Jr., Piranha Plant, Greninja, Incineroar, the three Mii Fighters (Brawler, Swordfighter and Gunner), Duck Hunt, Inkling, Byleth, Min Min, and Steve. Also, the Pokémon Trainer is technically absent, but all three of their Pokémon are playable separately like in Project M.

Gratuitous Japanese: While PMEX REMIX is an English-language mod, new characters with Dub Name Changes such as Blaziken are denoted by their original Japanese names in the game's file system, to match the pre-existing system for Brawl. Additionally, Navarre and Lyn speak Japanese, despite the former two having existing English voice actors; in their case, this is to match Marth and Roy respectively, who come from the same worlds. This also initially applied to Elizabeth prior to version 0.95DX.

Same Character, But Different
PMEX Remix (Video Game) / int_9890e176
comment
Same Character, But Different: Ridley's design and moveset are different from his official appearance in Ultimate; he's even bigger, uses his Brawl design (inspired by Super Metroid), and has a moveset that draws slightly more from his boss battles in Metroid games, most notably with his down aerial "pogo stick" tail strike and his ability to grab and carry foes with his talons. Lucina reuses many of her assets from 3DS/Wii U and Ultimate, but is no longer a Moveset Clone of Marth, instead having her own unique moveset. Sephiroth was added to the game prior to his official appearance in Ultimate, and had an independently developed moveset inspired by Dissidia Final Fantasy and derived from Cloud's mechanics. However, the 0.95 update gave him his Ultimate moveset. Banjo & Kazooie are an independent mod developed for Project M that predates their inclusion in Ultimate, but were finalized at around the same time as their official invitation to Smash. Their moveset therefore has quite a few differences from their Ultimate selves.

Ascended Extra: Many characters that only had supporting roles in previous Smash games, such as Waluigi and Lyn, are now full-fledged playable fighters. In particular, Sans and Yu Narukami are true fighters with unique movesets instead of Mii costumes. Originally cameoing as a trophy and sticker in vanilla Brawl, Dyna Blade, although she's a mere model swap, takes Ridley's place as a boss in Boss Battles Mode since Ridley's a playable fighter (though Meta Ridley remains unaltered). A few of the newcomers were present in Project+ in the form of alternate costumes for some characters, these being Ninten, the Masked Man, Big Boss, and Galacta Knight.

Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Even as more fighters are added to the game, there are two fighters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that have been excluded for various reasons, and are uncertain as to their ability to be added to future iterations, according to the modders: Inkling and Steve, due to the difficulty in implementing their unique mechanics. Piranha Plant was also Demoted to Extra as part of Waluigi's moveset prior to version 0.95DX, but as it is technically possible to implement its full Ultimate moveset in the game, its future status is unknown.

Team Battles themselves come in two types: the first from the first three Smash games, where fighters are forced to use their alternate costumes that match their team color, and the other from 3DS/Wii U and Ultimate, where allegiance is indicated by a colored outline while allowing fighters to use any costume.

Nerf: Because of how the Brawl engine works, some veterans from 3DS/Wii U and Ultimate have had some of their more useful mechanics removed: Prior to the 0.85b hotfix, Ryu, Ken and Terry didn't have command input versions of their special moves, limiting them to a single variation of each (one presumes that they're the "strong" versions). Divergent Character Evolution: Moveset Clones imported from 4/Ultimate are made more distinct from their original fighters by being variants on the movesets from those games rather than the original fighters' PM movesets, alongside having some all-new moves as well like Dark Pit Staff as Dark Pit's neutral special. In the case of Dark Samus and Lucina, they aren't clones at all, although Ultimate Lucina is in her L-load slot. Young Link has a new neutral B involving his slingshot, since Toon Link already inherited his Arrows on Fire in Project M. Alph is promoted from being an alternate costume of Olimar to a separate Moveset Clone, whose kit revolves around having only one Pikmin, which is always a Rock Pikmin. Simon has moves that came from Richter removed from his moveset, and Richter has his Holy Water changed to reflect how it works in his games.
