Pokémon R.O.W.E. is a ROM Hack based on Pokémon Emerald that transforms the Hoenn region into an Wide-Open Sandbox, much like Pokémon Crystal Clear did with Johto. The hack is authored by Rioluwott. In addition, the game adds almost anything you can think of that has been introduced up to Pokémon Sword and Shield. A few Pokémon (all of which are mythicals and legendaries) are missing, but are planned to be added in future updates. The patcher is located here. The official Pokécommunity thread is here.On January 22, 2024, during development of update 2.0, the source code for version 1.9.4 was released.

comment
Adaptation Expansion: Oldale Town has expanded in size. Furthermore, a new area called the Oldale Ruins is added. Peeko, Mr. Briney's Wingull, is shown to have evolved into Pelipper. A second level is added to the Rusturf Tunnel. The Desert Underpass now connects to the northern end of the desert on Route 111, and the player can find two fossils inside each day. Levitate is no longer an ability, but instead a characteristic of Pokémon that used to have it (and even a few that didn't, such as the Magnemite family). Many Pokémon have been given new moves, abilities, and even typings (for example, Arbok is now Poison/Dark as opposed to just Poison). Some abilities have new attributes. For example, Damp now makes incoming Fire-type moves less effective.

Game-Breaking Bug: Because the game is still in beta and adds so much to the game it's based on, it has been known to soft reset at random points, meaning you better save often. Furthermore, it is known to crash frequently on some emulators, such as VBA-M and No$GBA; fortunately, the game's website tells players exactly which emulators are supported.

If you choose the "Surprise Me" option when picking your starter, you can get any unevolved Pokémon except for Olympus Mons. While it's entirely possible to get something useless, you can also obtain pseudo-legendaries or powerful one-stage Pokémon this way.

Disc-One Nuke: Wild Meowth and Skitty have a small chance of holding Nuggets. All Pokémon now drop their held items upon defeat. If you battle enough of them, you can obtain a great many Nuggets and sell them for a lot of money. Even better, their evolved forms (Persian and Delcatty, respectively) are guaranteed to be holding Nuggets. Upon winning your first gym badge, you are handed an Amulet Coin. Meanwhile, the achievements menu will reward you with a Lucky Egg. These two items will allow you to rack up money and experience (respectively) more quickly. The EV-training items are able at the very beginning of the game and now make every Pokémon yield 20 EVs in whichever stat the item boosts growth of. While the player starts out with only 3000 Pokédollars, you can sell off all of your starting items to get enough money to buy one. If you play your cards right, you can turn your starter into a dangerous sweeper or wallbreaker before your first badge. If you choose the "Surprise Me" option when picking your starter, you can get any unevolved Pokémon except for Olympus Mons. While it's entirely possible to get something useless, you can also obtain pseudo-legendaries or powerful one-stage Pokémon this way.

Save Scumming: You cannot save in-game while you're inside of the room where you obtain your starter. However, if you use savestates and select the "Surprise Me" option, you can repeatedly reload until you get the Pokémon you want. When talking to one of the NPCs that will give you a regional starter in exchange for two shards, you can save and reset until you get the desired starter. The fossils inside the Desert Underpass are not determined until you pick them up, so you can save and reset until you get the fossil that you want.

 Pokémon R.O.W.E. (Video Game) / int_d6f284a3
comment
Anti-Frustration Features: Pokémon can use field moves as long as they exist in their movepool; they don't need to actually know the move. Furthermore, a few field moves don't even require a Pokémon that can learn the move: The Flying Taxis from Pokémon Sword and Shield are implemented in this game in case the player doesn't have a Pokémon that can learn Fly. If the player attempts to step into a body of water, they will automatically begin surfing. It is now possible to fly to most routes. A Pokémon's IVs and EVs are shown on its stats screen in the summary. If a Pokémon knows Hidden Power or Secret Power, the move's type will be displayed accurately instead of showing the Normal-type. HMs no longer require badges to use. To compensate for the Physical/Special split being implemented, Secret Power is retconned into a physical variant of Hidden Power. To make grinding less of an issue, the Exp. Share from Pokémon X and Y onwards is added into the game and available from the beginning. The Pokédex now displays the location of unseen Pokémon, making it easier for you to go out and find them. The DexNav from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is added, allowing you to seek out any Pokémon in the area that you have already seen. The Eviolite, in addition to its regular properties, also doubles as an Everstone. No more pressing the B button every time your Eviolite-boosted Pokémon levels up. Upon defeat, Pokémon will now drop their held items. If the player sleeps in a bed, the game's clock will skip ahead 12 hours, meaning that the player doesn't have to wait in real time to catch Pokémon that only appear during a certain time of day. For players who like a Pokémon but dislike its evolution(s), a new item called the Exiolite is introduced, which will boost an unevolved Pokémon's stats to match its evolutions after reaching a certain level. Items like Ability Capsules and Mints are added into the game, making it easier for players to build their Pokémon to their liking without breeding. In most places where you can obtain a gift Pokémon, there is a PC nearby in case your party is full. The Safari Zone does away with the 500-step limit. For those who don't like the changes added in the game, there is a vanilla mode where Pokémon have the same properties that they did in vanilla Emerald. Starting in 1.8, Tate and Liza's gym now has a warp that brings you straight to them as long as you've beaten them before.

Anti-Grinding: At Medium and Hard difficulty settings, a Pokémon's stats will stagnate until the player gets a new badge if they level up past a certain point. Averted in Randomization Mode, which will not randomize the locations of Audino, a reliable source of experience; the Meowth and Skitty lines, which are reliable sources of Nuggets; and Rotom and the Helioptile, Numel, Carvanha, and Sunkern families, which drop shards that can be used to obtain the regional starters.
