Shout-Out: When Mark loses at the bridge between Orange City and Orange Woods, he cries out "'Doh! I missed!", one of the Catchphrases of Wario from an early Mario Party game when he fails. Lolliwak's dex entry claims that no-one will know how many licks it'll take to get to the center of the lollipops it holds, a nod to classic Tootsie Pop commercials. One of the two minor trainers in Orange Gym is a swimmer named Kel, who says "Who loves orange soda?!" before fighting you. The other introduces herself as Oujay Samson, a pun on O.J. Simpson. In the Orange City Pokésweet Center, an NPC talks about Orange-types being able to inflict status conditions, ending with "Aren't oranges annoying?" There are areas named Donut Plains and Vanilla Dome (the former even has its theme from Super Mario Kart as background music), as well as a route named Grape Garden. Rain Dance is considered Chocolate-type. In other words, it's Chocolate Rain. Piestoise's design is a reference to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with its shiny form having the same colors as Michelangelo. Also, the four trainers in the Cooking Dojo are named Lee, Don, Raph, and Mike, and the dojo's master is named Splint. In Black Forest (the Safari Zone equivalent), you can meet a Hex Maniac named Ashley, who quotes the theme song of a certain other witch named Ashley.
