Rome at War (Romae ad Bellum) is a semi-total conversion Game Mod for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. It is set in classical antiquity, spanning roughly from 500 BC to 500 AD, and features 34 civilisations and a campaign involving Julius Caesar. The mod retains the vanilla game's tech tree with some modifications to reflect the time period. For example, while gunpowder is not featured, the Crossbowman is functionally identical to the vanilla Hand Cannoneer. Many units have custom-made, civilisation-specific graphics. New features include a complete overhaul to naval combat and mutually-exclusive unique technologies—each civilisation has access to four unique technologies (compared to two in the vanilla game), but only one can be chosen in each of the two final ages. The mod's community can be found on Discord. It's fair to assume that the mod shares a lot of tropes with the vanilla game.

Remixed Level: The 3rd to 5th missions in the Julius Caesar campaign depict the same events as the 2nd to 4th missions in the Ave Caesar campaign in Age of Empires I, though the missions themselves see significant changes.

Decomposite Character: As part of the mod's naval overhaul, the vanilla Dock has been split into two buildings: the Port (which builds civilian ships and researches naval improvements) and the Shipyard (which builds military ships).
