What the Golf? is a 3D comedy golf video game developed and published by Triband, primarily funded through the crowdfunding website Fig.In this game, you play multiple little challenges that act as a parody of golf and its rules, whether you need to shoot a ball, a soccer ball, a horse, a couch, a cat, a little humanoid golf ball, or the golfer himself. Between the different challenges, you play as a golf ball who progresses through an abandoned laboratory (the exception are the A.Is and the few NPCs here and there, who are here without real reason). It appears this place is not as safe as one might think. What the Golf? was released on PC and iOS in September 2019 and on Nintendo Switch in May 2020. New level packs have been added via free updates.

For Science!: The idea of the game's story is that scientists were so bored with golf that they devised various experiments to make something more interesting, gradually going more insane over time. It's hinted that everything down to the golfers was fabricated in the lab for the purpose of creating a silly golf game.

Bizarre and Improbable Golf Game: The whole point of the game. The very first two levels can create the illusion that it’s just your average golf game. Then, in the third level, you don’t putt the ball, but the golf player, and it’s at this moment that the game reveals its true nature.

Surprisingly Creepy Moment: Lab 0 suddenly coming alive around you. Even if it can't actually hurt you, it's still a shock from such a previously lighthearted game. In the third of the Sporty Sunday recurring levelsnote the one where you putt a football/soccer net into another net, an island way off into the background features a collapsed house and two t-posing zombified puttheads. They never show up anywhere else, and nothing in-game even acknowledges their existence let alone begins to explain them.

Shout-Out
What the Golf? (Video Game) / int_c75df49a
comment
Shout-Out: When the messages at the end are not puns, they’re generally this. Several levels mimic the gameplay of other titles. One level is designed to imitate classic Super Mario Bros ones. There are some Floating in a Bubble holes in the level that evoke the bubble mechanics from Super Mario Galaxy and Bubble Bobble. A Donkey Kong level is mixed in as well. One level is based on Angry Birds. One level is a copy of Flappy Bird. A group of levels in the gravity-themed section of the lab is based on Super Meat Boy. One level is built around a hat-wearing caterpillar that stretches to reach far platforms and makes accordion noises when doing so. It's essentially identical to the gameplay of a captured Tropical Wiggler from Super Mario Odyssey. Also, the level quip when completing it is related to caterpillars: "Who are you?" One section of the laboratory is devoted to Portal-themed levels. On the same floor, another wing of the laboratory is SUPERHOT-themed, complete with the end-of-level screens shouting, "SUPER! PUTT!". One level mimics Guitar Hero. One level involves spinning the cursor to flip a banjo around a short obstacle course of cluttered level objects, mimicking the gameplay and visual design of Getting Over It. One level challenge involves gathering objects up into a ball by touching them. One of the space levels' challenges places you in a field of planets, whereupon you absorb them and grow larger, invoking the simple visuals of Agar.io. One of the computer boss fights is based on the gameplay of Frogger. One section of the laboratory randomly transforms you into a slice of bread to putt around the area. Some of the challenges in the fights against the computer are based on Breakout. One level's challenge has you playing as a hole like in an early level (where the chunk of ground with the hole is putted as the ball), but in this case, it requires you to eat other objects to grow bigger. The "A Hole New World" campaign contains an explicit and more direct reference with a level built around putting a hole in the ground that functions exactly like the Donut County mechanic, with the level dropping the game's name when completed. One level in the twilight/stealth section features a character hiding in a box who can walk and stop to hide on command. The text quips for completing the challenges with the box character use the word "solid" as a compliment. One level in the "A Hole New World" campaign features dynamite barrels and cats as hazards, and ends with the phrase "Exploding Kittens''. The final hole in "A Hole New World" has an armoured FBI agent next to a redhead woman and a ravenette man both in black suits and blue shirts investigating it before entering. A level with a rocket-powered soccer ball namedrops Rocket League.
