The year is 2020, 8th of April. In the peaceful yet slowly thriving village of Motoki, an outrageous murder has just occurred. The continuation of Curse Killing Arc, answering some questions and setting up further plot points for the following arcs. The main POV character is Haruka. Shigatsu Youka acts directly only in very rare occassions, as every action runs the risk of exposing its true identity to the humans. However, it's more than enough, as it's capable of a limited form of future prediction thanks to using the cognitive power of its goddesses as well as the dead villagers of Arata. For example by snatching the Falsificaçao from Sakura's package, or killing Eiichirou, it was able to change the timeline in such a way it almost assured its victory. However it's not omniscient as there are events it's completely unable to predict or defend against, such as Shinozaki Hajime coming into the village and cooperating with Kikyou. As powerful as it is, if an event is outside the perception of its angels or its carriers, it cannot predict it. | |

Bizarre Alien Reproduction: Well holy shit, is it ever. Major spoilers ahead. The entire motivation of the main antagonist, Shigatsu Youka, is simply to breed, and to kill all humans that might pose a threat to its reproductive cycle. And its reproductive cycle is indeed strange: First of all it starts with any mammal having the spores of Shigatsu Youka entering into their bloodstream. These are called First-generation carriers. The spores release a substance similar to adrenaline into the host's bloodstream, allowing them to go beyond their normal limits, exhibiting a state of Hysterical Strength, at the cost of losing their limbs if they aren't careful enough. Injecting Droga or eating the roots of an Arata Sakura tree are valid ways where this can happen. If a person has their eyes, mouth, or other head membranes exposed to the blood of a first-generation carrier, they become a second-generation carrier. These people have the power to predict danger as long as they're within the vicinity of a blossoming Sakura tree and the conditions fro which they became a first-generation carrier are replicated. For Sakura, it's done by confining herself into a closed, dark space as that is where Eiichirou spilled his blood on her. For Natsumi, it's done by a gust of wind, as the wind was blowing when Eiichirou died in front of her. If a second-generation carrier spills their blood into another person, they become a third-generation carrier. Third-generation carriers do not need special conditions to predict danger as long as the sakura trees are blossoming, but in the case of girls (as well as men who bled recently, like in a battle) they become possessed by an irresistible urge to kill second and third-generation carriers. This instinct to kill is done by releasing substances similar to Adrenaline and Noradrenaline into the brain of the affected, making their killing urge very similar to heroin withdrawal. These carriers are easily identified by having their left eye be green. Which is convenient, because... Fourth-generation carriers are created by exposing first and second-generation carriers to the corpse of a third-generation carrier. As third-generation carriers are likely to snap and kill somebody, that made them pariahs in Arata, designated to be killed as soon as they were born, which dovetails nicely into the reproductive cycle. Fourth-generation carriers end up being taken over by the spores, losing their free will similarly to a snail taken over by a Leucochloridium before being used as nutrients for a newly grown Arata tree/mushroom growing inside their bodies, ending the cycle. | |

Eldritch Location: Arata is a deeply strange place. To begin with, it is placed within a national territory, meaning it doesn't belong to any prefecture and can't be traversed by normal people that aren't locals without a permit unless they are authorized by the villagers to enter. This is an extremely unusual state of affairs. Also, the village itself has a strange and extremely insular culture, mixing elements of Christianism as well as more typical Shinto and Buddhism beliefs, due to its history as a refuge for outcasts, including foreign priests in the Azuchi-Momoyama and Edo periods. To add to this, all villagers but one since there are records have died in April, either from natural causes, suicide or (more recently) homicide. This strangeness is, of course, accentuated by its bizarre ecological environment, full of autochthonous species and overgrown animals. This is a direct consequence of Shigatsu Youka using its trees to warp the biosphere around it to suit its needs. However, all of the villagers have never known anything but Arata, and they are willing to defend it to the death if pressed. Their motto is "all for one, one for all." Unfortunately, this very same sense of camaraderie and wariness against outsiders gets exploited in many routes by the antagonists against the Motoki group, with disastrous consequences for everybody involved. Nevertheless, it is also a force that can be used for good, as seen in the Golden Ending, when not a single villager hesitates to become a third-generation carrier to exploit Shigatsu Youka's weak point. | |

What You Are in the Dark: The very last Arc, Eternal Recurrence, deals with this. After witnessing the events of Eden's Sakura Arc, Mika (who is actually the Haruka of the Final Voice timeline) has to choose between staying in her own timeline and accepting she'll never see Natsumi again (after she murdered her with her own hands in a bout of spore-induced psychosis, no less), running away to the ''Eden's Sakura'' timeline, leaving her mother and her friend Gotou alone, or making a Deal with the Devil with Shigatsu Youka and reviving Natsumi at the cost of dooming the villages of Motoki and Arata, as well as the free will of her friends. It is only after a pep talk with Natsumi and us that she manages to pull through and make the right choice, fixing her timeline and defeating the fungus. In Nietzsche's philosophy, life was an eternal loop, so we should strive to feel proud and make the most of every moment as we'll revisit it again and again. Understanding this is what made Haruka be able to go through with her choice. | |

Cosmic Plaything: The entire cast, but Haruka especially deserves a mention. Not only did she watch her father die in an extremely traumatic fashion and her mother go half insane from grief, only to get bullied in the school she had to move to after being separated from her dear friend Natsumi. Depending on the route she either dies, watches all of her friends and family die, becomes an immortal zombie slave, murders her own little sister or has to pay for Gotou's outrageous lunch bills. Also, it has to be close to a place where Cherry blossoms are in bloom and there needs to be wind blowing. It is a very limited form of clairvoyance for this reason, but nevertheless it proves invaluable at preventing some of the more insidious threats of the setting. The reason for these conditions is that as a second-generation carrier, Natsumi needs to be in a place where the pollen of the cherry blossoms can relay information from and into Shigatsu Youka, which is the true source of this talent. Learning to not rely on this, therefore, is crucial to be able to get to the better endings. | |
