Recreyo is an American-animated 2020 web-series created by YouTube creator, CypherDen. The series later went on to get picked up unofficially by Rooster Teeth, having begun airing on their website alongside the weekly YouTube releases. The link to their channel can be found here, and the link to their website can be found here. The series largely focuses on a group of "friends", consisting of Den (CypherDen), Curt (CurtRichy), Chilly (ChillyPanda), Ivan (Ivan Animated), and later Christian (Frugal Aesthetic) and Kristine (k.fel). This group regularly engages in a variety of ridiculous adventures, usually led by a regularly rotating member of the team, as they attempt to put aside their trust issues and blatant sociopathy to accomplish a mutual goal. This rarely ends well.On January 5th, 2024, after four years of activity, Recreyo officially announced the channel would be ending, citing both Den and Christian's desire to leave the channel to focus on their own content and had done all they could with the channel, and Curt, Ivan, and Kristine initially wanting to continue, but deciding as a whole to end the channel now that so many core members had decided to leave.

Anyone Can Die: Played for Laughs; none of the deaths carry over into future episodes, and whenever someone does die, they'll gleefully continue talking regardless, acting as if nothing ever happened. Just about the only time death has an impact is "Can They Escape a Parallel Dimension?", where Chilly is explicitly barred from leaving the dimension because she died earlier.

Massive Multiplayer Crossover: Downplayed as it's more the setup for a metaplot. The first part of the Grand Finale, "Can You Find What's Wrong with the Multiverse? | THE END OF RECREYO", has Recreyo-chan explain that the multiverse is falling apart thanks to Recreyo's scenarios and the actions of her twin, resulting in various realities bleeding together. Among those shown as the casts of Adventure TimeSpecificallyFinn Mertens, Cinnamon Bun, Lady Rainicorn, Lumpy Space Princess, Slime Princess, and Simon Petrikov/Ice King and Steven UniverseSpecificallySteven Universe, Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Lapis Lazuli, and Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond fighting at the Mystery Shack, and the casts of NarutoSpecificallyNaruto Uzumaki, Jiraiya the Gallant, Sasuke Uchiha, Gaara of the Desert, Hinata Hyuga, and Itachi Uchiha and My Hero AcademiaSpecificallyIzuku Midoriya/"Deku", Shoto Todoroki, Momo Yaoyorozu/"Creati", Ochaco Uraraka/"Uravity", Eijiro Kirishima/"Red Riot", Tsuyu Asui/"Froppy", and Katsuki Bakugo/"Great Explosion Murder God Dynamite" fighting at Baratie. Numerous characters from other works likewise appear during the glitches, including Bob the Builder, Slender Man, The Mother, Dora the Explorer, Caillou, Strawberry Shortcake, Patrick Star, Shrek, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken, a Magicarp, a crewmate, Nigel Thornberry, Homer Simpson, Ugandan Knuckles, Freddy Fazbear, Chica, and Burntrap, Saitama, and Godzilla.

Batman Gambit: A variant of the Lind L. Tailor trap was made in the "Can They Survive Death Note?", in which an entire hostage situation is staged with the hostage-taker being a death row inmate, with the broadcast being in a specific part of Japan in an effort to bait Kira into using the Death Note. This gets subverted since the Kiras managed to screw up writing in the Death Note and so no one was killed in the process.

Boring, but Practical: In "Can They Survive Hunter x Hunter?", everyone rags on Ivan for spreading out his skill points to create a balanced character, mockingly calling him an NPC. However, this allows him to be one of the two Recreyo members to actually get his Hunter license. His skill point in intuition gives him a hint that lets him solve the first puzzle immediately (though it's implied that Ivan didn't actually figure it out and instead got it by sheer coincidence), his skill points in stamina provide a safe cushion in the second puzzle (though he doesn't end up needing said cushion), and his skill points in strength allow him to defeat Christian in battle when the two otherwise would have tied. Subverted with Chilly in the same episode. She does the same stat spread as Ivan (even being mocked the same way), but she completely fails to interpret her hint in the intuition puzzle until time is almost up, and she's eliminated in the stamina puzzle because of her downright abysmal time even when her skill points are added.

Playing Against Type: An In-Universe case. While many scenarios based on existing IP's will have the crew take on the roles of characters of that IP, not all casting choices will be perfect fits. The The Cabin in the Woods scenario, "We Found a Secret in this Cabin", has scenario maker Den assign the roles of the "College Kids" to the crew. While Ivan, Christian, and Kristine fit neatly into the roles of Dana Polk, Holden McCrea, and Jules Louden respectively, Curt and Den don't fall as neatly into their assigned roles of Curt Vaughan and Marty Mikalski. Unlike Vaughan, Curt doesn't go along with the enforced Idiot Ball to force the group to split up due to being Genre Savvy about horror movies, acting more akin to Marty in calling out the stupidity of the cliches, and only suffering Vaughan's canonical fate due to Den employing a bit of railroading. Den meanwhile tries to get Curt to go along with the "voices" telling them to split up and acts more like the leader of the group due to being the narrator, making her fit the role of Vaughan more, despite sharing Marty's fakeout death and leading the others to the facility. invoked

Guest-Star Party Member: Every handful of episodes will feature a collaboration with other YouTube channels, thus forcing others into the same scenarios as Recreyo. Season 2 in particular featured these, with over half the season having one join them, and being allowed to give the sign off at the end. Yssa Badiola would be the first instance, appearing in both "Can They Become Wizards?" and "Can They Escape a Parallel Dimension?", initially stuck as the Only Sane Man before undergoing a Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal. Blaine Gibson and Chris Demarais of Rooster Teeth would appear twice, first as their characters "Clayton" and "Chris" for "Can They Escape Hell?", then as "Charmander" and "Pikachu" in "Can They Survive Pokémon?" Curt's fellow "Beyond The Bot" members (Dorrie, Cristal, Jacob, Adrian, and Yedoye) join the crew in playing Among Us. "Can They Survive a Demonic Possession?" would see Chilly kidnap Crystal and David of "The Dootlez" to take part in her teleporter experiment alongside the crew. "Can They Survive Rick and Morty?" would see Hugo/"Sloppypencil" join the crew in fighting Ronnie and the forces of "Morp Morp". Tara Strong and Greg Cipes would participate in a "Tournament of Power" style event against the other members of Recreyo in "Can They Survive Dragon Ball Z?" Den would recruit Cole and Andrew of "Podcast But Outside" to join The Guardians of the Globe in "Can They Survive Invincible?" The members of Plan 3 (Hosuh, Hart, Stephen) and Gavin/"GNG" would be conscripted into joining the Squid Game by Den in "Can You Survive Squid Game?" Streamer "Pokimane" would join for the channels first three part episode, having her leading a team of students for the Joint Training Exercise in "Can You Survive My Hero Academia?" Bryson/Haminations would enroll as a student in Hogwarts alongside Curt, Den, and Christian for the two-part "Can You Survive Harry Potter?" TierZero is recruited to help the crew construct a "Dinosaur Tier List" by explaining to them details regarding various dinosaurs. Rebecca Parham joins Ivan, Christian, and Curt in trying to retrieve a crown for King in "Can You Survive The Owl House?" Christian/"CircleToonsHD" ends up crashing in the woods with all but Ivan stuck playing Slenderman's game in "Can You Survive Slender?" GingerPale would join the group in constructing a "Cartoon Crush Tier List". Sethical would end up on Destiny Islands and forced to battle the Heartless with the crew in "Can You Survive Kingdom Hearts?" The Five Nights at Freddy's scenarios would see a new guest appearing with the crew starting with the third game, first having "eLLcartoons", then "Kwiteee", and then Domics. "YourBudTevin" would end up petrified and awakening in the Stone World with the crew in "Can You Survive Dr. STONE?"

Butt-Monkey: Ivan and Chilly tend to suffer the most at the hands of their friends and the universe, owing to Ivan being a Dirty Coward and Chilly more often than not being The Load. Which one the group goes after more tends to flip-flop between episodes. Yamcha, already a Memetic Loser in his universe, is absolutely mocked in "Can They Survive Dragon Ball Z?", where he not only loses his round in the tournament from merely being insulted, but outright dies from it. His body isn't even given the dignity of being cleared from the arena.

Achievements in Ignorance: During the Death Note episode, the group comes across a hostage situation which involved their father in the stand-off. They decide to write that their father turns into a shark/jet hybrid and kills the hostage taker (while meeting Lavagirl). However, they didn't read the fine print on the Death Note—it only allows deaths that are physically possible—and as a result of their planned method of killing being way too out there, nothing happens. note Well, technically, the Death Note's rule follows this up by just giving the intended victim a heart attack instead, but that's Adapted Out. However, their father returns home and confides in them that it was all a Batman Gambit to lure out the killer. As a result, they managed to evade the police. For added points, in canon Light Yagami actually fell for the trap and had the criminal killed, meaning that the constantly-bickering Recreyo crew managed to perform better than Light!

Not His Sled: Invoked by Curt in the Demon Slayer episode. While the crew's scenario is the same as Tanjiro's (finding your village slain by a demon with their sibling being turned into a demon), Curt does not do the Nezuko route and explicitly states that he's going to kill them. It's even lampshaded by Curt when the idea of putting him in a box is brought up.

Esoteric Happy Ending: Combined with Pyrrhic Victory and even discussed in-universe in "Can They Survive Sweet Home?" The episode ends with Chilly as the Sole Survivor when the others are attacked by cannibalistic monsters. However, when she taunts her dead friends, they are fairly quick to point out three things. One—a horde of the cannibalistic monsters surrounds the small apartment she's living in, meaning she'll be eaten in days if not hours. Two—Den confirms that she's infected, meaning she's going to become one of the cannibalistic monsters even if she's not eaten. Three—she's stuck in Wisconsin while the others get to move on to heaven. Chilly continues to celebrate anyways despite it being abundantly clear that her victory will not last long at all.

As all three Recreyo members currently in the scenario are of non-Caucasian ancestrynote Ivan and Den are Filipino; Chilly is Jordanian, Ivan immediately asks her point-blank if she's being racist. Curt has to hastily clarify that she was referring to the crew's status as YouTubers, not their race.

Reality Is Unrealistic: Exploited by Curt in "Can They Escape a Parallel Dimension?", where one of the puzzles is a room with three doors, one of which features alligators who haven't eaten in months. The group naturally concludes that the alligators have long since starved, but as it turns out, alligators can survive for up to two years without food. By the time this is revealed, Chilly has ended the alligators' hunger.

Bait-and-Switch: The beginning of "the backrooms." has Curt lead the crew to believe the scenario will be about "Ouran High School Host Club", going as far as to have them be students enrolling at Ouran Academy and meeting main character Haruhi Fujioka. Then Chilly slips on a Banana Peel, a Running Gag from the series, causing everyone to trip with her... and then no-clip out of reality, ending up in the Backrooms. Ivan fails to realize they aren't doing Ouran for the majority of the scenario, visibly confused as to what is happening.

Art Shift: The series has a variety of different animation styles varying between the different animators working on the episodesnote Links to their respective social media accounts can be found in the descriptions of the episodes they worked on. The shift is best shown in character design: certain episodes depict Den with a nose while others depict her without one (especially noticeable given she's the only member of the crew to be drawn with one at all), and certain episodes give Ivan the same Black Bead Eyes as everyone else while others depict him with large circles as eyes to represent his sunglasses.

There are multiple episodes that are based around the group surviving specific settings, including "Can They Escape Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory?", "Can They Escape Jurassic Park?", "Can They Survive Among Us?", etc. Christian sings the theme to Halo after Chilly makes a particularly bad mistake during "Can They Beat the Alien Impostor?" The prologue to "Can They Survive Alice in Borderland?" has Christian singing "Earthquake" by Tyler the Creator. During their guest appearances in the Dragon Ball episode, Tara Strong and Greg Cipes make use of powers from the various roles they've played, from Kevin Levin to Raven. In Christian's test in "Can You Survive Assassination Classroom?", Family Feud is referenced by the crew due to the test resembling Family Feud's "Fast money" round. In Curt's test in "Can You Survive Assassination Classroom?", Opening from various anime is used; Naruto, Soul Eater, Food wars, Haikyu, And Assassination Classroom.

Railroading: Many times, largely due to Ivan but occasionally from others, the narrator will force the rest of the crew into making decisions they normally wouldn't so as to progress the scenario according to the script they wrote. Said moments are used sparingly by all but Ivan as a result of the narrator either accounting for the craziness of the crew, or having multiple options or branching plot beats. Ivan is the only exception, largely relying on railroading due to favoring a linear narrative dependent on specific choices being made, and forcing the others to comply when they don't go along with his script.

Running Gag: Chilly exclaiming "Help! Help! Help!", much to her friends' annoyance. Christian saying literally anything about the McRib. Den attempting to stab someone, usually Ivan. In "Can you survive Danganronpa?" have everyone calls Curt a "Raffle Boy". In "Can You Survive Teen Titans?", using the line "There's X of us and Y of them." This is reprised for "Can You Survive A Stalker". "You are all in high school!" or something to that effect when starting an episode.

Pet the Dog: When Ivan is trapped in "Can They Survive the Mummy?", Chilly assigns the others a code that they must decipher in order to free him. The code in question reads "Ivan is a valuable Recreyo member," showing that in spite of all the bickering Chilly cares about him to some degree. Additionally, when the others realize what it is they have to say, they actually say it in full rather than just leave Ivan to die... although Christian frantically insists that that can't be the full code after the fact.
