So This Is Basically... was a Web Animation series created by JelloApocalypse (real name Brendan Blaber), best known for his Welcome to... series. In fact, So This is Basically was a Spiritual Successor to that series, but instead of summarizing websites, Jello explained pieces of media, mainly Western Animation, Anime, and Video Games. It was his dominant series after the final installment of Welcome to.Each episode featured Jello as a narrator talking about the work in question, with his own illustrations displayed instead of screenshots from the work (episodes after the first few were drawn by other artists in Jello's style, though Jello still did storyboarding). Most of the humor is carried over from Welcome to; expect lots of lampshading and lighthearted (and some not so lighthearted) jabs at the work's problems, even if he has no clue what he is talking about. With the release of So This Is Basically Genshin Impact in May 2022, Jello sadly confirmed that he's not currently planning on making more episodes due to an increased focus on other projects, such as his voice acting career, various gaming highlight videos, and the Epithet Erased novels. The episodes can be found here. In order, the series tackled: Steven Universe Miraculous Ladybug Gravity Falls Cowboy Bebop Overwatch Adventure Time Pokémon Danny Phantom The Legend of Zelda Rick and Morty Star vs. the Forces of Evil My Hero Academia JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Fire Emblem Kingdom Hearts Ace Attorney Animal Crossing RWBY Sonic the Hedgehog Persona 5 The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series Genshin ImpactWhile the series was active, contributors to Jello's Patreon were able to vote for what the next episode of So This is Basically was.

So This Is Basically... (Web Animation) / int_23698fa8 | comment |
With RWBY, Jello finds that the show has too many plotlines that go nowhere. Jello argues that the show has too many characters and no idea what to do with any of them (especially singling out Blake as being bland and uninteresting). Jello saves most of his main criticisms for the plot, saying it takes forever for the main plot to start, tries to paint Ozpin as morally grey and fails at it, and doesn't do sufficient world building for a world that really needs it. He feels the pacing of the first three volumes is flawed such that it's best to view them all as one long season, and he then says to avoid volumes 4 and 5 altogether as they are garbage.

Dead Unicorn Trope | |
So This Is Basically... (Web Animation) / int_36471c17 | comment |
Dead Unicorn Trope: A few of the archetype parodies in the Fire Emblem video fall into this. The "red-haired mage who isn't good yet!" is close, but falls short of the mark. While "early-joining mage with bad starting stats" is fairly common in Fire Emblem, only three of them (Azelle, Ewan and Ricken) have been redheads—if there's a stereotypical hair color for early-joining mages in the series, it's probably green (Merric, Asbel, Lugh, Soren) or purple (Arthur, Erk, Lute). The Evil Chancellor is a young and beautiful woman, when in the Fire Emblem franchise, the Gharnef archetype as the fandom calls them, is Always Male and typically elderly. The series is known for its usage of Females Are More Innocent, so female villains rarely get to be as devious as the male villains. According to Jello, this was due to the Vizier being a Composite Character of Nergal (a member of the Gharnef archetype) and Sonia (a minor villain) from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. There also is not a single Fire Emblem game, in the entire franchise, that has exactly four enemy generals consisting of "the fun crazy one", "the boring one", "the one that dies offscreen", and "the noble one".

Broken Aesop: The Pokémon episode points out that, while the games push the idea that the titular creatures should be treated as friends and you should use the ones you love, the actual mechanics make some Pokémon objectively worse than others, and the best way to get a good one is massive amounts of inbreeding. The Persona 5 episode points out how the Phantom Thieves keep questioning their "morally light-light-grey" actions, featuring Ann and Ryuji wondering if it was okay that they changed the heart of Thomas Babyeater, The Inventor of Eating Babies. The joke is of course it's okay for the Phantom Thieves to stop those kinds of criminals from doing any more crimes, yet the game keeps acting like the Phantom Thieves are not that different from their targets and somehow morally compromised.

With Kingdom Hearts, Jello believes that the series' infamous Kudzu Plot makes it basically impossible to understand, the fact that the characters seem to pull sudden plot developments out of nowhere makes it annoying, and that the Ho Yay implications between multiple characters (Sora and Riku especially) are impossible to ignore. To prove the first point, Jello replaces the word "darkness" with the word "bees" throughout the video, saying that it makes just as much sense as the actual plot.invoked

Steven Universe: Amethyst is "Armrest", Pearl is "Squidward", Rose Quartz is "Mrs. Marshmallow", Jasper is "Hulk Hogan", Ronaldo is "Curly Fries Man", and Yellow Diamond is "the evil space giraffe". Overwatch: There's one for every single playable character (well, the ones that were playable at the time of the video's creation), plus extra ones for Soldier: 76 ("Call of Duty" for when he was Jack Morrison and "Call of Duty: Ghosts" for how he is now) and Reaper ("Death Gun" for when he was Gabriel Reyes and "Little Timmy's First OC" for how he is now). Genji and Hanzo are collectively referred to as "Dragon Tales", McCree is "Mr. McGoo", Pharah is "Samus Pharan", Reaper is "La Catrina", Soldier: 76 is "American Dad", Tracer is "Tracy", Bastion is "Play of the Game & Watch", Junkrat is "Johnny Test", Mei is "Chinese Bootleg Elsa" (with her shirt reading "Eslo"), Torbjörn is "Toblerone", Widowmaker is "Wimblebimble", D.Va is "Neon Pink Evangelion", Reinhardt is "MC Hammer", Roadhog is "Outback Steakhouse", Winston is "OOOOOH Dr. Zaius!", Zarya is "It's not a phase, mom!", Mercy is "Necromercer", Symmetra is "Cortana", Zenyatta is "Build-A-Buddha", and Ana is "Ana-nother One". Lúcio is the odd man out, as his name is actually given correctly. Adventure Time: Princess Bubblegum is "Princess Bobobo", The Ice King is "Ice Cream", The Lich is "The Snitch", and BMO is "Beebo". Pokémon: Professor Kukui is called "Professor Tree". Danny Phantom: Tucker and Sam become "Sucker and Tam". The Legend of Zelda: Every place where Link's name should be said is replaced by one of Link's signature yells. It even replaces the word "link" when it shows up ("linked" timelines and the GBA Link Cable). Ganondorf is once referred to as "Gambledork". Rick and Morty: Rick is "Brick" and Morty is "Mortar". Star vs. the Forces of Evil: Surprisingly, nobody is incorrectly named, but the show itself is called Star vs. the Faces of Evil. My Hero Academia: Deku is referred to as both "Deku Scrub" and "Small Might". Uraraka is "Interplanet Janet", Iida is "Initial D", Mina is "Slip-N-Slide", Momo is "Easy Make Oven", Tsuyu is "All Frogs Go to Heaven", Bakugou is both "Bakugan" and then when he's introduced in the roll call he and Aoyama are collectively introduced with "Gunpowder Gelatine, Dynamite With a Laser Beam", Sero is "Caught on Tape", Tooru is "Not on Tape", Kirishima is "Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu", Fumikage is "Two Birds, One Hero", Kouda is "Animal Crossing", Kyouka is "Damn it, how do these things always get so tangled?", Todoroki is "That's Rough, Buddy", Shouji is "Oh, uh... Ew."; Rikidou, Ojiro, Mineta, and Kaminari are given the Theme Naming of "Soda", "OJ", "Purple Stuff", and "Two Kinds of Sunny D", respectively. Shigaraki is also referred to as "Bad Touch Man" and Toga is referred to as "This Girl Who Looks Like She's on the Verge of Climaxing". JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The title is renamed to "JimJim's Bizarre Advimvims", while the main protagonists are all called "Joje" instead of "JoJo" like they usually are. Ace Attorney: Phoenix is "Knick-Knack Paddy Whack", Maya is "Hamburger Helper", Pearl is "Literal Toddler", Kay is "Technically Not a Thief", Rayfa is "Dancing Queen", Franziska is "~She's So Pretty~", Luke is "This Reminds Me of a Puzzle", Trucy is "Gramaryevil", and Edgeworth is "Miles Legwork". Averted with Gumshoe, Apollo, and Athena. RWBY: Ruby is just Ruby, Weiss is "Whines", Blake is "Bland", and Salem is "Mommy Salami". And let's not start with how many times he butchers "RWBY" including "Rwubby", "Rude Bees", "Robbie Rotten", "Kanga-RWBY", and "Roomba". He also refers to Faunus as "Laguz". Sonic the Hedgehog: Sonic is "Sonic Hedgehog", Dr. Eggman is "Large Egg", Eggman Nega is "Rotten Egg", Chaos is "Scrambled Egg", Mephiles is "Century Egg", Zavok is "Devilled Egg", The Egg Robos are "Easter Eggs", Erazor Djinn is "Egg... Take That!
So This Is Basically... (Web Animation) / int_b53077b3 | comment |
Take That!: Adventure Time, RWBY, and to a lesser extent, Kingdom Hearts are the series that Jello outright dislikes, and he picks apart the series for several flaws. The Stinger of the Pokémon episode takes a shot at the Shadow Pokémon duology, which Jello isn't fond of from a gameplay perspective. invoked When talking about bad mechanics in the Zelda games, Jello mentions "all of Skyward Sword" as one. He also mentions the Hyrule Historia timeline as something that "makes everything worse" and thus should be ignored, fitting with the video showing the cast as composites of all their appearances. In his My Hero Academia video, he calls people who call the series Boku no Hero Academia "annoying", and tells people to stop sexualizing the cast since they're fifteen. He also picks on Class 1-B (saying they don't matter), implies that he doesn't understand why Tooru Hagakure is so popular and accuses her of not having a personality and takes a shot at people who nitpick at him. He makes a jab at the shipping in the fandom towards the end of the episode, but this one feels a bit more playful. In his Kingdom Hearts video, aside from Jello not liking the series in general very much, one of the lingering questions he thinks people may have is "Why does Re:coded exist?" The Star vs. the Forces of Evil video has several of these aimed at the show's first season. He calls Ferguson and Alfonso so boring and terrible that he doesn't even remember their names and asks why the network didn't think that the female leads Jackie and Jana were better characters and didn't give as much focus on them from the start. He finishes the video by praising the third season being more plot-focused, and hopes it doesn't go back to the bad stuff or focus on irrelevant things from season one (he then complains about Steven Universe doing exactly that in its own later seasons). His Persona 5 video sees him taking potshots at Atlus for not allowing same sex romance options but being okay with Joker romancing adults, particularly the alcoholic Ohya. His ''JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" video makes it pretty apparent that Jello has absolutely no care for Kakyoin, blatantly comparing him to being a cardboard cutout. The description of the video makes it even more apparent, as it says "stop pretending kakyoin has a personality guys"

With Adventure Time, Jello finds that Finn, Jake, and Princess Bubblegum are unsympathetic leads, the humor is awkward and stupid, the excessive Toilet Humor is annoying, the show doesn't conclude character arcs, and it focuses too much on romantic subplots. Jello much rather prefers the stories of the tertiary cast over the main story.

Man of a Thousand Voices: Jello is a professional voice actor and it shows. He's performed near-perfect imitations of Principal Nezu, Kermit, Sora, Ruby, AND Qrow! Keep in mind that Ruby is a squeaky-voiced teenage girl and Qrow is a gravelly-voiced alcoholic in his mid-forties.

Animal Motifs: The Original Characters in the hypothetical JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 9 get appropriately ridiculous outfits in the style of the series, with Joanne adorned with ladybugs, her Tagalong Kid wearing a milkman suit with a cow-patterned hat and bowtie with a cowbell, and the user of Smash Mouth having a row of sharp teeth while wearing alligator-themed clothing

Expy: The lord in the Fire Emblem video resembles Lyn, especially her hair, and has Roy's comically late promotion. Joanne, the protagonist of the hypothetical JoJo Part 9, looks like a mixture of Jolyne and Giorno. Her Kid Sidekick is reminiscent of Emporio, with a cow-print outfit similar to Rikiel's. The second villain she encounters has a design similar to Donatello Versus.

Biting-the-Hand Humor: "So This is Basically Persona 5" was sponsored by Atlus, the creators of the Persona series. Seasonal Rot
So This Is Basically... (Web Animation) / int_f1a1a9a4 | comment |
Seasonal Rotinvoked: Jello sees the later seasons of Danny Phantom as this, with the cited reasons being a weak finale, poor use of the established cast, and neglecting elements that had made the early seasons worthwhile. While Jello can recommend watching the first three volumes of RWBY as a single season, he suggests people simply ask others who already watched 4 and 5 what happened so they don't have to watch garbage. Jello points out that Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) was so bad that it literally retconned itself out of existence. It was at that point that fans kept mocking Sonic to the point where he decided to mock himself.

Running Gag | |
So This Is Basically... (Web Animation) / int_f9f2c33 | comment |
Running Gag: The frequent misnamings of characters. Jello often demonstrates a character being a jerkass by depicting them attacking a dog with a jackhammer. In the Pokémon episode, a mockup of the "Who's That Pokémon?" screen appears thrice, each time showing a forgotten/ridiculous Pokémon (Qwilfish, Probopass, and Alomomola) in place of an iconic one (Qwilfish replaces a silhouette of Charmander, and Probopass a silhouette of Pikachu, though Alomomola really is the third silhouetted Pokémon.) Throughout the Zelda episode, any mention of Link's name is replaced by one of Link's random screams or grunts. This includes uses of the word "link", such as HYAH cables or explaining how the timeline HAAAHs the games together. In the Kingdom Hearts episode, he declares that you could replace the word "darkness" with "bees" and everything would make just as much sense. And then he does just that for the rest of the video: in the monologue, in the images (bees surround everything tainted by darkness), and in having darkness-infused Kermit tell Sora that he should be a beekeeper.
