CPU Kerfuffle is a livestream series run by ChongoShow (A.K.A. Ryan) on Twitch, following a series of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments featuring level 9 CPU fighters and a partially-improvised overarching narrative that involves them. The series is often co-commentated by Ryan’s friends, including (in order of appearance) Alfred (PaperBoxHouse), Penny (SnapCube), Comona (ThatComona), Jay (JayMonoto), Joy (DollipDaze), Holly (Hollowtones), Katy (Katydiids), Dyvone (OverlordDyvone), and Red (Redbuddi). The series (along with Ryan’s streams in general) went on hiatus in early 2022 after Kerfuffle #33. A few months after that, Ryan began running some test tournaments, which he then began posting about to his Discord server and slowly began adding additional lore to (with the caveat that they be considered non-canon to CPUK proper). These were titled the Non Canon Curiosity Tournaments, or NCCTs, and in addition to being readable on Discord they were also archived online for public access.

Makes Just as Much Sense in Context
CPU Kerfuffle (Web Video) / int_4fc0aaa7 | comment |
Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: There are plenty of things in CPUK that are just plain bizarre, mainly due to the format the story is told in. Hamburger Helper and Dadondorf are ex-husbands trying to give their relationship another shot after Hamburger Helper helped bring an evil hivemind into their dimension. They also have an adoptive son named Jimbo. A character named Corn on the Cob, who is the corn gijinka daughter of a farmer named Patch-Man. One of the most climactic moments of Kerfuffle #22 is when Komaeda, while seeking out other Universal Constants, comes across Sans Undertale and Kanye West and has to team up with Sans to defeat Kanye in the Sans fight hallway. And it wasn’t even a Sunday. A somewhat major arc of Season 3 is the ongoing conflict between Jon Arbuckle and Garfield, the latter of whom is an eldritch entity. Sephiroth is here. He just is.

Breather Episode: In between the end of season 2 and the premiere of season 3, Chongo held a “bonus episode removed from the larger narrative and featuring some of the often-forgotten one-off characters. However, it still had some wild moments and still tied into the greater plot in a few ways. After Kerfuffle #31, Ryan immediately decided the next episode (Gaiden 5) to take a break from the heavy plot- it featured almost entirely new characters (plus Sax Jack, who hasn't been seen since season 1) and had no plot cutscenes up until the very end.

Humiliation Conga: Kerfuffle #24 confirms that Doctor Order suffered a nasty-yet-deserved one after the events of 20. After getting hurled thousands of years into the past in an alternate dimension by Chartreuse, she tried to establish herself as Kanduka, the goddess of time and order, to the locals, only managing to garner a small following. Her Sanity Slippage ended up overtaking her, and when she tried to get her counterpart of this timeline, Susan O'Rourke, to build her a time machine to retrieve her and bring her back to the Kerfuffle dimension, Susan actually ignored her, going to the Kerfuffle timeline herself and becoming horrified at what Order had done.

Wham Episode: Kerfuffle #19. Doctor Order's time machine is now fully functional, Folk (revealed to be Therapuppy from a bad future) travels back to stop her, and the episode ends with the championship bout getting frozen in time, as Chartreuse encourages all of the other fighters to gear up to stop her, leading to characters such as Dantoinette and P. Rool making their return. The episode ends with Iggy and Squid Jenny summoning Sans Undertale to the fray as well. Kerfuffle #20, as the season 2 finale, as well. It turns out that the people stuck in the time bubble aren't really stuck, and Doctor Order is able to start absorbing Chartreuse's power almost as soon as the bubble drops. All of CPUK's best fighters are brought together to fight Doctor Order, but she still manages to gain near godlike power. She could only be defeated by Larry, who got sent back in time 7 years at the end of the episode, becoming Home MD. Kerfuffle #31, the Orange sub-tourney of the Grand Kerfuffle. Among other things, Crimson is back at full power for much of the episode, Prism's power (at least one of her powers) gets revealed, Dantoinette learns that the Ciblings' parent Spectrum is dying, and the episode ends with Crimson trying to possess P. Rool and getting vaporized by Prism. However, the very last scene of the episode suggests he found a way to possess Larry, who can shapeshift, and the same scene reveals that Folk (and likely his timeline) is fading away.

CPU Kerfuffle (Web Video) / int_9d12bbc1 | comment |
Foreshadowing: Surprisingly, considering the improvised nature of the series. Notable examples: Edgeworth’s odd behavior in Kerfuffle #15 signalling that he was, in fact, Sephiroth. Home MD seems to know a lot about spirits, and seems to have some idea of things that are going to happen. He turns out to be Larry’s future self. An amusingly accidental example comes from way back in Kerfuffle #3, where it’s joked that Home MD can see the future. It’s less that he can see it and more that he simply remembers it. Restored Sephiroth and the Grunk talking about the buzzing in the back of their heads is ominous to be sure, but it’s not until Kerfuffle #24 that we find out it’s the influence of Cobalt. Crimson hijacks the Smashup in Kerfuffle #31, showing up where Larry usually would for the “hah! Nice. The note Larry left for J0hn at the end of the episode, while vague, implies that Crimson possessed him.

Mood Whiplash: This tends to happen since there’s no telling what the fights will result in, so there’s often no telling which scenes will follow each other. A particularly distressing example comes from Kerfuffle #23, where after we almost see Restored Sephiroth kill Folk (only being stopped by J0hn at the last minute), we cut to a scene of Larry, at home, trying to figure out how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

Composite Character: A couple of examples, due to some character submissions overlapping and some improvisation. Take On Marshmallow (T.O.M.) was the combination of two submitted characters who both happened to be gray Kirbys. “Florida Man and “Larry were originally two separate character concepts, with the shapeshifter Larry only being “revealed as the Florida Man from earlier in the series partway into Kerfuffle #11. Home MD is also Larry, having been sent back in time 7 years from Kerfuffle #20. Therapuppy got combined with Holly’s submission of “Your Neighbor’s Little Dog, with Folk the Red Kraken member being combined with “Your Neighbor’s Little Dog: Bad Future, making Folk Therapuppy’s future self and making this a twofold example.

No Indoor Voice: Captain Quadratic yells just about everything he says, to the point where even his text is in all caps. Trainer of Justice is much the same, being loud enough on a consistent basis to have his text be in all caps whenever rendered in text.

CPU Kerfuffle (Web Video) / int_fe3368cf | comment |
My Future Self and Me: Upon being revealed as Therapuppy’s future self, Folk gives her some advice (and some antacids). Also, Home MD and Larry interact plenty throughout the series between fighting in Kerfuffle #3 and Larry helping Home after he emerged from the time machine in Kerfuffle #18. However, Larry does not find out that Home MD is his future self until Kerfuffle #19.
