"It's a beautiful day here in the TropeDome, where our competitors are about to duke it out in order to see who's the best of the Marble League. Hello everyone, I'm Greg Woods, and we're about to describe Jelle's Marble Runs right now."Jelle's Marble Runs is the world's premier marble sports YouTube channel, and is the home of several marble "sporting events" such as the Sand Marble Rally, Hubelino Tournament, Marbula One, and most notably, the MarbleLeague, formerly called the MarbleLympics. These videos usually feature racing and sports competitions between several teams, made up of marbles of a common color theme. For instance, the Pinkies are monochromatic pink marbles, the Rojo Rollers are red, and so on, while the commentator Greg Woods presents them as if they were actual athletes, assigning personality to each marble and reacting to events as if they were actual people. No results are predetermined. The channel is run by Jelle Bakker of the Netherlands. In late 2018, his channel was accidentally deleted, but he was able to create a new one and upload all of his old videos. In 2021, the channel successfully crowdfunded a video game based on the 2021 MarbleLeague, to be developed by Big Head Games. It was released into Early Access on Steam on December 20 of that year.

Gone Horribly Wrong: The Balls of Chaos switched their captaincy from Anarchy to Tumult one week before the Marble League 2022 Qualifiers. While they managed to qualify, they would finish with a total of 64 points in 16 events...with a silver from the very first event. This means that the Balls of Chaos scored a mere 44 points in 15 events, or a points-per-average of 2.93. The Crazy Cat's Eyes replaced Yellow Eye with Blue Eye as a result of the former bottling the title against the O'rangers, leaving them to finish 2nd in Marbula One Season 3. Their result in Season 4? 5th, with them being out of podium contention before the final event.

All or Nothing: The Crazy Cat's Eyes in Marble League 2023, who finished the season with three golds, three bronzes... one 15th, and three 16th-place finishes (read: dead last, zero points for the event). Across all 16 events, they never finished between 7th and 12th place. This meant that while they started off strong (gold in the first event), a midseason slump led to them in 11th place with only three events remaining. Whereupon they went bronze-gold-gold to win the entire league by one point!

Butt-Monkey | |
Jelle's Marble Runs (Web Video) / int_47fea76b | comment |
Butt-Monkey: Team Momo has had horrible luck in the Marble League with one of its' members getting injured in 2017 and having two teammates get injured in 2018 to the point where they have to ask Team Primary for help. The Oceanics are this in the Marble League 2019, despite being the hosts. It takes them ten episodes to even make it out of the heat runs of the events, and even despite a fourth-place finish, they're still one from the bottom of the leaderboard. A few more events and a predictably poor performance in a water event later, they officially became the first team for which it was mathematically impossible to win. And as if it wasn't bad enough for the Oceanics in 2019, where they went into the final event in last place and with no hope of advancing, they proceeded to finish that event dead last. They were also the only team who failed to score a single medal. This led to, among other things, the firing of their coach, Tide, as the team was booed by the audience. Then they fail to qualify for 2021 and 2022. The Limers had it even worse in 2019. They not only missed qualification by one place. But they also spent all of MarbleLeague Showdown 2019 in last place missing the 2020 qualifiers. And their rivals, The Raspberry Racers win the 2019 MarbleLeague. It gets worse in 2020 when they become one of two teams, the other being The Turtle Sliders to fail to make it past the B-League for the second year in a row. Subverted in 2021, when the B-League results became obsolete after the Jawbreakers and Hornets retired and the Limers actually made it again. The Kobalts and the Rojo Rollers, the only two teams who were around since the beginning to never qualify for any Marble League after the first until 2021 when the Rojo Rollers finally made it. Moreso for the Kobalts as they failed to qualify for the 2020 qualifiers against teams that failed to qualify the previous year. However, the Rojo Rollers finished last overall and became the first team to be eliminated from winning the league that year and their coach Rojo Cero was fired after another poor performance in the Sand Rally. In Marbula One, Mary of Team Primary falls into this, with one 15th-place and three 16th-place finishes in her four races; even her sole finish ahead of last place was only possible due to Wospy falling off the conveyor belt and finishing a lap back. Mellow Yellow in the 2020 MarbleLeague despite getting bronze medals in the Long Jump and the High Jump, had a long line of inconsistency spending most of it in last, and only being able to move up to fourteenth place in the end because of a silver medal in the Marathon. The Pinkies were this in their first six years, except 2017 when they finished 6th. They were considered to be one of the worst overall performers in the league despite being in the first four Marble Leagues. In 2016 and 2018, they finished last. And in 2019, they were next-to-last and tied with The Midnight Wisps for the most last place finishes. And in 2020, they finished dead last in the qualifiers consistently finishing in the bottom half of all four events and 12 points behind the next-to-last team, The Rojo Rollers. Averted in Marble League 2022 where they shocked the franchise by appearing 1st out of nowhere, beating famous teams like the Savage Speeders. The Raspberry Racers in Marbula One. After finishing poorly in Marbula One Season 2, they were not invited for Season 3, though were reinvited for Marbula One Season 4. The team finished the season with a mere 10 points in 10 races, scoring zero points in the second half.

Put on a Bus | |
Jelle's Marble Runs (Web Video) / int_754df088 | comment |
Put on a Bus: The "modern format" of the main League has thirty two teams and three segments: Qualifying, the Main League and the Showdown. Twenty four teams compete in the Qualifying for twelve slots, to participate in the Main League alongside the year's host and the previous year's podium finishers. The remaining teams who don't qualify are relegated to the Showdown, a smaller sample of the year's events, held after the Main League. The four teams who fail at the Showdown don't even get the opportunity to qualify, and are put on the bus until the next year's Showdown. Several teams have retired after just one season with the Gliding Glaciers, Golden Orbs, and Black Jacks all retiring after failing to make it past the 2018 Qualifiers. Team Plasma was originally going to compete in the 2019 Marble League, but retired with the Green Ducks taking their place. Also because the Hubelino Tournament was discontinued after 2018, every Hubelino team except for the Bumblebees and Minty Maniacs have retired. The Quicksilvers retired after just two seasons. As of 2021, The Jawbreakers and Hornets have retired (the latter merging with the Bumblebees) with the Gliding Glaciers making a comeback; the Bumblebees, the Minty Maniacs, the Black Jacks, and Team Plasma have also returned.

Humiliation Conga: The Oceanics' run in 2019, as is fairly evident from several other entries on this page. Poor showing after poor showing, the first team mathematically eliminated from contention, the coach fired, fans storming out, guaranteed last place before the final event and just to put the cherry on the cake, that last one didn't matter at all because they finished the last event dead last and didn't score any points anyway. And to make matters worse, their poor streak continued into the first half of their 2020 attempt. While they did achieve success in the latter half of 2020, and overall gold in the 2021 winter Marble League, their conga came back in full force when they completely failed to qualify for the summer Leagues four years in a row from 2021, suffering another fan riot in 2022 and hitting rock bottom of the 2023 Showdown.

Throw the Dog a Bone: After a disastrous performance in 2019 and spending most of the first half of 2020 in next to last, The Oceanics finally get a gold medal in the Sand Mogul Race. They continued to claw back points over the rest of 2020, with a further two medals (silver and bronze) to secure tenth in the final standings. After that, they were thrown the biggest bone of all - overall victory in the subsequent Winter Games. After spending most of 2020 in last place overall, Mellow Yellow managed to secure a second place in the final event to leapfrog them over the Hornets and Balls of Chaos. The 2021 Marble League takes it further by giving them the overall championship in a very tight race for the top. The Rojo Rollers failed to qualify for four years in a row, but after the 2021 Qualifiers, finally make it. And they are rewarded for all their work by coming dead last.

Took a Level in Badass: Sometimes, teams that did poorly the previous year will excel the next year. The Oceanics finished 3rd in 2018 after faring poorly in the first two years. Then after a disastrous 2019, they had a decent showing in 2020 and won the 2021 Winter Marble League Special. The Minty Maniacs finished 13th in their first Marble League in 2018, but they came back in 2020 and finished third overall with four gold medals. The Shining Swarm were overall a mediocre team only qualifying for 2017 before missing out the next three years. After a decent performance in 2021 where they finally break their qualification drought, they finish second overall in the 2022 Marble League. The Pinkies in 2022 suffered a poor performance in Marbula 1 Season 3, barely beating the Midnight Wisps for 19th, and overall have never done well in the Marble League. However, that year, they qualified, and blew multiple teams out of the water, even the Savage Speeders, to become the champions.

Back from the Brink | |
Jelle's Marble Runs (Web Video) / int_a37e27db | comment |
Back from the Brink: In the 2017 MarbleLeague, Team Galactic stood in dead last after two events, but managed to jump up six places from eleventh to fifth overall after a last second victory in the final event by Starry. In ML2016 Pinkies finished at the bottom of the leaderboard. They made a comeback in ML2017, finishing at 6th place. This did not continue in the following years until 2022 when they win the overall gold. A bit of a theme for the Midnight Wisps. In their debut season, they barely qualified after winning the last qualifying event. And in 2018, they were in 10th place in the standings with two events to go, and they wound up winning the gold in both to become the Marble League champions. In ML2019, The O'Rangers were in last after the first two events. But after winning gold in the penultimate event and fourth in the final event, they rose all the way up to 6th place. Also in ML2019, The Balls Of Chaos were next-to-last and one of two teams to not have any medals, but finished silver and gold in the last two events to rise up to 9th place. For the Sand Marble Rally, this and the inverse of this applies to Ghost Plasma. Ghost Plasma was originally the champion of the 2016 season, but proceeded to wind up dead last twice in a row the next two years. In 2019, Ghost Plasma made a triumphant comeback, making second place and just narrowly losing out to Red Number 3. And then in 2022, they became the first marble ever to win three races in a row...then DNF'ed the last three races to blow the title to Slimer. The 2020 Marble League has the Savage Speeders drop to last with only a 14th and 15th place finish after the first two events, but they end up finishing first overall after getting seven medals in thirteen events. Later on in 2020, the Savage Speeders found themselves at 11th at the halfway point of Marbula One Season 2, with Rapidly in the bottom 3 of the individual championship. He would finish 14th after 2 consecutive medals as the Savage Speeders finishes 2nd. Mellow Yellow had a huge one in the 2021 Marble League. After an atrocious 14th place in ML 2020, as well as finishing Marbula One seasons 1 and 2 in tenth and fifteenth place respectively and not being invited to the Marble League Winter Special, they were determined to redeem themselves in the new Marble League season. Even so, it seemed that redemption was not possible, sitting at fourteenth place in the standings overall at one point. However, back-to-back gold medals in Steeplechase and the Sand Mogul Race, a silver medal in Diving, and a bronze medal in the final event, Marblocross, brought the team to their first Marble League victory, just beating the Raspberry Racers.

The Ace | |
Jelle's Marble Runs (Web Video) / int_b5b4b077 | comment |
The Ace: The Savage Speeders are often regarded as the strongest team in the MarbleLeague, having won in 2016 and 2020, and finishing second in 2017 and 2018. They also won the first Marbula One even winning the final race. Speedy also got the highest point total for that year. In addition, this trope is Played Straight for their Relay Race performances, having won the event 5 out of 6 times in the Marble League. The Green Ducks proved to be very skilled in their debut in 2019, finishing second overall in their first year and have spent all but one event of the year's MarbleLeague in the top three in the overall standings. Unfortunately, their dominance did not carry over to the 2020 Marble League. The O'Rangers are also considered this as they have performed well in the league, finishing no lower than 6th for every league they've been in until Marbula Season 2. Starry of Team Galactic is considered this, almost always performing well and breaking multiple performance-related records. She even won the first Marbula One race! The Crazy Cat's Eyes are this in their Marbula One debut in 2021. They won five gold medals and finished 61 points above the runner-up team, The Savage Speeders, and with both their marbles earning a podium spot on the individual championship as well. And in their second Marbula One Season, they finish second, but Red Eye gets the highest point total overall. The Raspberry Racers in the 2021 Marble League, where they finish second overall and spend the entire league placing no lower than third in the overall standings. Red Number 3 is the most popular, and most skilled of the Sand Marble Rally racers (He is a bit divisive though since it came to light that he is not actually a marble but part of a keychain). Subverted following his dead last finish in Season 6 of the Sand Marble Rally.

Shout-Out: Team Galactic and Team Plasma were both lifted directly from villainous teams from Pokémon. Team Plasma is also named after Sand Marble Rally Racer, Ghost Plasma. Mellow Yellow's name is a parody of the drink, "Mello Yello". Team Momo is named after the MOMO auto parts used for making Ferrari sports cars. Four out of five members of the Shining Swarm are named after prominent characters from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. The fifth member, Sterling, is not, but Shiny, Sparkle, Shimmer, and Glimmer are.note Respectively, Shining Armor (nicknamed Shiny), Twilight Sparkle, Sunset Shimmer, and Starlight Glimmer. There is actually a Princess Sterling, but she was a toyline-only character and never appeared in the show. Their home city is named Galeem. The Green Ducks are a reference to The Mighty Ducks as well as Hank Green, who helped Jelle and the crew regain monetization. And it honors JoshOG, a streamer that has promoted the MarbleLeague regularly. One of the Indigo Stars is named Indigo Montoya. Two of the Turtle Sliders, Crush and Squirt are named after the sea turtles in Finding Nemo. Additionally, their Crowd Chant of "Turtle Power!" is taken from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Rojo Rollers supporters sing "Rojo Rojo a Roller's life for me" out of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Pinky Winky from the Pinkies is named after Tinky Winky from the children's TV show The Teletubbies. The reserve member, Pinky Panther is named after the Pink Panther. The Solar Flare's fans chant is "Praise! The! Sun!". The Chocolatiers Crowd Chant is screaming the word chocolate over and over again with increasing intensity.

Every Year They Fizzle Out: Team Galactic have been given the dubious nickname "Champions of the Preseason" since they always seem to perform well during qualifying, but fall off during the main MarbleLeague competition. By 2020, of the six teams to have competed in every Marble League at that pointnote the Savage Speeders, O'rangers, Mellow Yellow, Thunderbolts, Oceanics and Team Galactic, they are the only ones to have never finished in the top three. Then in 2021, they miss out on qualification by finishing last in their group. Ultimately, Team Galactic managed to get second place in 2022, however started fizzling out again come 2023. In 2018 and 2019, the Snowballs and Oceanics respectively finished first in the Friendly Round, a round where the top three from the previous year, plus the host team compete for fun in the events of the qualifiers. However, neither of them were able to reclaim that same success in the real MarbleLeague. The Crazy Cat's Eyes are also notorious for doing well in the first half only to fizzle out and finish much lower in the standings at the end. Averted in the 2023 Marble League, however, when they win the last event, and end up winning the Marble League.

Down to the Last Play: The last event. 2017's MarbleLeague ended with a heroic comeback by the O'Rangers, who took the silver medal in the sand rally to pull ahead of the Savage Speeders. In that same event, Team Galactic took the lead in the last second to win. Happened again in the 2021 Marble League where, going into the final event, 11 teams were capable of winning the whole thing. Mellow Yellow scoring a clutch bronze in the Marblocross ended up securing the first ever championship for team. The last lap of the last event! The 2023 Marble League came down to a one-lap sprint between Red Eye of the Crazy Cat's Eyes and Bumble of the Bumblebees in front of their home crowd, with Red Eye surging ahead near the end to claim both the gold medal for the event and enough points to win the overall Marble League that year.

Miracle Rally: With two events left to play and a large point gap (25 points above Mellow Yellow in the reupload's scoring format), the Savage Speeders looked dead set to win the 2017 MarbleLeague, until they failed to make it past the first heats of both the Underwater Race and Sand Rally. The O'Rangers would win two silvers to pip them for first. The Midnight Wisps in the 2018 MarbleLeague were in 10th place in the standings before the final two events. They would win gold in both events to beat the Savage Speeders by one point and claim the overall victory. After making the podium three times in a row, Mellow Yellow would finish in the bottom three for two events straight and 11th before the final event and fall to third overall trailing the Raspberry Racers by nine points and the Hazers by two points. Thanks to Rizzy of the Raspberry Racers getting 15th, Hazy of the Hazers getting 16th, and Yellup finishing with bronze, Mellow Yellow would rise from third to finish first overall and get their first championship beating the Raspberry Racers by five points. In Marble League 2023, the Crazy Cat's Eyes fell from top of the league to top 5 to 11th after event 13 thanks to three dead-last finishes during the middle set of events, including four straight finishes of 13th place or below. But after a bronze in G-Force Endurance, Red Eye pulled out a gold in the Sand Rally, not only bringing the Cats up to 4th but earning pole position in the final event, the Honeycomb Grand Prix. While not leading for much of the event, Red Eye overtook Bumble of the Bumblebees during the final lap to win gold, not just overtaking the Bees but the Speeders (who finished 14th and 13th in the final two events) for the league championship.

How the Mighty Have Fallen

How the Mighty Have Fallen: The Midnight Wisps were once regarded as one of the Marble League's best teams, having won the 2018 Marble League and securing two 4th place finishes. However, they failed to qualify for Marble League 2021, before finishing in 9th out of 12th in the Showdown that season. Although they would qualify for Marble League 2022, they would finish 15th with no medals. The Hazers also apply to this trope. Up until 2022, the Hazers were considered to be the best team that never won a trophy, before a disastrous Marbula One Season 3 campaign saw them finish in 17th. Their captain, Hazy would announce that he will be taking a sabbatical, with Misty replacing him as captain. The Hazers would fail to qualify for the 2022 Marble League, and eventually got relegated to the 2023 Showdown after Misty finished 12th in the Sand Rally, coupled with the fact that the Snowballs and the Jungle Jumpers jumped them in the standings, having finished in the top 4 in that event. Red Number 3 was once the undisputed GOAT of the Sand Marble Rally, having podiumed in three consecutive seasons, even winning back-to-back championships in 2018 and 2019. However, his performances dipped after his surgery, culminating in him finishing dead last in Season 6. With two events remaining in Marble League 2023, the Savage Speeders held a comfortable 19-point lead over the second-place Bumblebees; additionally, both upcoming events were races (the Sand Rally and Honeycomb Grand Prix). However, team reserve Whizzy DNF'd in the first Sand Rally heat and finished last among finishers in the second, the 14th-place finish lowering the Speeders' lead to a still-comfortable 15 points (meaning they were assured of a title with a 5th or better in the Honeycomb GP) but also putting Speedy in the 14th position to start the GP. Unfortunately for the Speeders, Speedy never got into the peloton and finished 13th, while the Crazy Cat's Eyes and Bumblebees finished 1-2 (both in the event and the final standings), knocking the Speeders into an overall bronze.
