Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Twitch Plays Pokémon (TPP) is a series of social experiments in which commands representing buttons on an original Game Boy (up, down, left, right, A, B, start, and select) are entered into a chat on Twitch, and then translated into a game of Pokémon via an IRC bot. In short, hundreds of people are fighting over a controller. Throughout its life, Twitch Plays Pokémon has spawned hilarious characters, memorable moments, and even a few religions.Twitch Plays Pokémon Charity Dual Red & Blue is an event hosted on the Twitch Plays Pokémon channel as part of the "Catch a Million" charity event run by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which rallied various Pokémon streamers in an effort to catch a total of one million Pokémon over the course of a week with the goal of raising money to fund childhood cancer research. To add a competitive incentive to the event, each streamer was associated with one of two teams, respectively led by streamers Bruce Greene and Kara Corvus.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Charity Dual Red & Blue itself doubled as the sixtieth main run of TPP, and featured the very same romhack used during Twitch Plays Pokémon Dual Red & Blue, with the Red side labeled as "Team Greene", and the Blue side as "Team Corvus". Aside from some minor balance adjustments, the game remained largely the same as it was the last time it was played, and was accompanied by a minimal overlay that aimed to strip down any non-essential information that might confuse newcomers. It began on April 24th, 2022, along with the "Catch a Million" event itself, following a "test" intermission during which Dual Blue was actually beaten a first time. The run ended on April 30th, 2022 with both BBBBBa on the Blue side and ᴾₖᴾₖᴾₖᴾₖᴾₖ on the Red side managing to defeat the Pokémon League and complete the Pokédex ; following this, the stream broadcasted a dual revisit of Twitch Plays Pokémon Trading Card Game for the remainder of the "Catch a Million" event. Overall, TPP caught a total of 310 Pokémon for the event (147 on the Red side and 163 on the Blue side), and managed to raise a total of $559.90 over the course of the week.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_3'); })See also here for the archived status of Pokémon Red, and here for the archived status of Pokémon Blue.Note: Tropes relating to the original Dual Red & Blue hack are to be listed on the latter's run page instead of here.

The Artifact: Even though the run took place in 2022, the Diploma still states "TPP 2018", aka the year in which the original Dual Red & Blue were played.

Good Bad Bugs: invoked The Red side's victory against the Pokémon Champion was due largely in part to a glitch that caused BBBBBa to use her current team, which consisted of only five Pokémon among which the unevolved Omanyte and Dratini as well as an Exeggutor with only two moves, instead of her much, much stronger Champion team, turning her into a complete Anti-Climax Boss. This happened again when Red rematched the Pokémon League; while BBBBBa did not use her current team of three underleveled Pokémon that time around, the team she ended up with was still way less threatening than her Champion Team, as it included three unevolved Pokémon (Dratini, Psyduck and Doduo), and three throwaway Pokémon originally traded from Red with largely ineffective movesets (Jynx, Seaking, and Fearow). This led to the Red team's Blastoise easily sweeping through the entire fight by itself, and Red entering multiple unevolved Pokémon that they initially only meant to level grind into the Hall of Fame.

Mythology Gag: Deliberately invoked with two Sandslash caught in Red that were named "PAPYRUS" and "GASTER" respectively as a Shout-Out to Undertale, referencing another Sandslash named "SANS" that was used during the Wooper 2: Electric Boogaloo intermission of Christmas 2021.

Ascended Meme: The screenshot used to advertise the run on the charity's website shows the Red side being trapped by Burglar Simonnote A Trainer in the Cinnabar Mansion which, when talked to at the wrong time, will end up blocking the player in a two-tile space, with the only mean of escape being to faint from wild encounters (which can often take entire hours), an infamously frequent occurrence during Generation I runs. The Mewtwo caught on the Blue side was named "MEWFOUR", as a deliberate reference to the often fabled Mewthree.

Honor Before Reason: The Red Team insisted on earning all 9999 Coins necessary to purchase Porygon from the Celadon Game Coner, even despite being perfectly aware that the much less tedious and time-consuming path of action would have been to buy it for 6500 Coins on the Blue side and trade it over.

Appeal to Novelty: Several of the Pokémon used during this run were chosen purely because they had never been entered in the Hall of Fame by TPP before, namely Kangaskhan, Seaking and Jynx on the Blue side, and Tangela and Porygon on the Red side.

Put on a Bus: DUX the Farfetch'd stayed on the Red team for the majority of the run, but was ultimately deposited before defeating the Elite 4 and Champion, with BAAKA the Porygon taking its place in the Hall of Fame instead. It later returned to the team and was entered into the Hall of Fame during one of the Pokémon League rematches.

The Bus Came Back: DUX the Farfetch'd spent the major part of the run in the Red team, but was deposited before the Elite 4 and Champion were defeated, its spot being taken by BAAKA the Porygon. Later on, it was withdrawn once more while level grinding weaker Pokémon to complete the Pokédex, and ended up entering the Hall of Fame for good during one of said grinding sessions.

Pilot: This run was preceded by both the Sanqui Red & Blue intermission on the week-end before it and the Charity Dual Red & Blue Preview intermission during the three days leading to its beginning, which were both intended to test the dual inputting system and new minimalistic overlay in order to iron out any potential issues in advance.

Friendship Moment: One notable gesture of kindness occurred when the Red side found itself genuinely struggling to get past the Rival Battle on the SS Anne. Players initially treated the dual run as a genuine race, which caused Blue to take a significant lead, which in turn caused the rival team in Red to become much more difficult as it matched the way overleveled Blue team. Instead of keeping their lead, Blue players instead not only decided to wait for Red to catch up, but even taught Cut to a Sandshrew so they could trade it to Red players, allowing them to bypass the rival fight altogether.
