DC League of Super-Pets / int_118a41d5 | comment |
Daydream Surprise: As Krypto worries about Superman neglecting him in favor of Lois, Lois arrives for her and Supes' date. Krypto answers the door, grabs Lois by the ankle and flings her into the sky, and she eventually lands in the middle of the ocean. Cut to Krypto still in Superman's apartment, shaking his head and going "Nah, I shouldn't do that." Unusually for this trope, this Imagine Spot comes up again later as Krypto reflects on the way he has been acting since he learned that Superman plans to propose to Lois, and he calls imagining doing such a thing in the first place as one of the ways that he has been a bad dog over the past several days.

I Owe You My Life: Whiskers is clearly on Lulu's side after the latter rescued her from the rehoming centre. Until she loses a life in a fight with the Super-Pets, that is - then she disappears until The Stinger, where it looks like she walks by [her]self. Apparently, having given her life (one of them) for Lulu's cause, she considered her debt repaid.

Black Comedy: Two examples, both of which get subverted by dialogue before they get into really dark territory. Whiskers is sealed into a garbage tip with a grenade that detonates powerfully enough to deform the tip, but he clarifies he’s still got eight lives left from within. Lulu is picked up by Mark and Keith and thrown into a compartment of a roadside food stall with the possible implication that it’s a deep fryer but is in fact clarified to be just harmless hot dog water.

Mythology Gag | |
DC League of Super-Pets / int_26ac510e | comment |
Mythology Gag: Superman's red on black S symbol design harkens back to his Fleischer Studios Superman Theatrical Cartoons look. A background billboard for a local aquarium advertises a "Fleischerfish" as a further nod. During The Stinger at the end of the credits, Black Adam is featured. Dwayne Johnson, who voices Krypto, was cast as Black Adam for his eponymous movie, and voices both Black Adam and his dog Anubis. At the end of the movie, PB, a pig, is adopted by Wonder Woman. During the Justice League Unlimited episode "This Little Piggy", Wonder Woman was magically turned into a pig. We first find Lois Lane at the tail end of a report, describing how Superman managed to defeat Mr. Mxyzptlk by making him say his name backwards. At multiple points in the movie, Lulu demands that the heroes kneel before her. At the start of the film when Krypto grabs hold of a van driven by two thugs, he holds it in the same pose as Superman on the cover of Action Comics #1. Bonus points for a bystander turning away from that with the exact same shocked, head-in-hands expression as the bystander on the cover as well. Lots of the signs visible in Planet Square reference businesses from mainstream DC continuity — from Big Belly Burger to Sundollar Coffee, as well as "Hex's Texas Grill", "Kord" and plenty of others.

Name From Another Species
DC League of Super-Pets / int_31a59d13 | comment |
Name From Another Species: Krypto's father's name appears to have been changed from Zypto (comics) to Dog-El (film). This is because the comics used the name given to him by his owners, while the film used the name he used to refer to himself - which was presumably given by his parents or chosen to fit his adoptive family. This was the name his son knew, since Dog-El used it in his recordings.

Adapted Out: Streaky the Super-Cat, Supergirl's pet and one of the most prominent pets in DC Comics other than Krypto and Ace, is nowhere to be seen in this movie. Also absent is Jumpa, Wonder Woman's kangaroo companion, in favor of new character PB. The fact that Jumpa is a somewhat obscure character might have contributed. Also, a kangaroo's presence in a Metropolis animal shelter might seem too much of a stretch.

Personality Powers: Krypto is Superman's best friend, hence he's also the winner of the Superpower Lottery. Ace is stoic and never gives up the fight, he ends up with Super-Toughness. PB is insecure and wants to do the best, she ends up a Sizeshifter and so is a literal shrinking violet that's also capable of becoming an incredible giant. Chip is manic, he gets electricity powers. Merton gets Super-Speed simply for the irony of a fast turtle. Lulu becomes as megalomaniacal as Lex, she gets Mind over Matter powers that enable her to mold the world in spite of her small size.

Liar Revealed: Subverted. Ace frequently promises to take the other animals to a "farm upstate" where they can be free from humans, though he later reveals to Krypto that he’s only giving them hope and doesn’t know if such a place even exists. This revelation doesn’t lead to any further conflict and Krypto simply covers for Ace by agreeing to take them to the Kent farm in Smallville, and the rest of the group are none the wiser that Ace had been lying to them.

Green Rocks: Kryptonite plays a prominent role in the plot, naturally being experimented on by Lex. Lulu was his guinea pig, natch, for different variations. She lost all her fur from red kryptonite, while purple kryptonite gave her vivid dreams. Lex's plan is to empower himself with a shard of orange kryptonite, which fails because Lulu is the only one to realize that that only gives superpowers to animals.

MacGuffin: Kryptonite. Specifically green and orange Kryptonite. Luthor lays out early in the film that green kryptonite drains kryptonian superpowers (Lulu, of course uses this to depower Krypto and weaken Superman shortly after). Orange kryptonite, on the other hand, supposedly does the opposite, giving superpowers to normal people. Of course, Lulu clarified that this works on PETS, not people. Sure enough, this is what gives her and the other shelter pets their powers.

Adaptational Backstory Change: In the comics, Krypto was sent up in a test rocket by Jor-El, and due to time dilation, arrived on Earth years after Kal-El. Here, he goes to Earth with him. Anthropomorphic Shift: An inversion — Merton the Turtle is based on Merton McSnurtle/The Terrific Whatsit from Golden Age comics and Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! While McSnurtle is from a World of Funny Animals, this Merton is shown in the trailers to be a regular pet-shop turtle. Likewise, Chip is presented as an actual squirrel, rather than the comic book Ch'p, an alien who resembles an anthropomorphic squirrel.

Shout-Out: While ironing his shirt with his heat vision, Clark comments that he should call himself Iron Man. He quickly dismisses the idea. Krypto is apparently a fan of The Great British Bake Off (which has its original name in the movie, despite the program being re-titled as The Great British Baking Show in the U.S.). After being used as a canine shield, Ace bemoans not getting "a magic hammer or something". As PB uncontrollably grows inside a car, Merton is pushed toward a window glass besides a stuck-on Garfield plush. At the end of the film, Chip comments that his new owner (Jessica Cruz) "put a ring on it" while showing off a new Green Lantern ring. While hunting down the Super-Pets, Whiskers parodies A Nightmare on Elm Street's classic "One, two, Freddy's coming for you" song. They also sing ""Super Pets, come out to plaaaaaay..." Lulu mockingly refers to the Super-Pets as "the PAW Patrol". Chip's equivalent in the comics has a green lantern ring (which he does get by the end of the film) but since that wouldn't work with the Orange Kryptonite Meta Origin, the creators naturally decided to have the rodent character get electricity powers. When Ace says the "farm upstate" won't have any humans controlling them, he calls it "a 100% Animal Farm". PB cheerfully comments that that doesn't sound ominous at all.

Adaptation Species Change: Chip is an ordinary Earth squirrel that gains electricity powers, in contrast to Ch'p in the comics being a Green Lantern Corpsman who is a member of a race of squirrel-like aliens called H'lvenites. Ace is a Boxer in this film instead of a German Shepherd or a Great Dane like he's usually portrayed. He describes himself as 1/8 Boxer and is accused of being 7/8 Chihuahua - which he doesn't deny although it doesn't show in his physique. While snarking about the Justice League during their first appearance, Krypto says that Wonder Woman's invisible jet is more transparent than actually invisible.
