"Wild and Woolly Hare" is a 1959 Looney Tunes theatrical cartoon directed by Friz Freleng and starring Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam.Set in the Old West in Canasta Falls, Yosemite Sam arrives at The Fat Chance Saloon (where most of the customers are chugging beers and playing poker) and declares that he's 'the rootin'-est, tootin'-est, shootin'-est bobtail wildcat in the west', only to be cut off by Bugs. Taking offense to this, Sam challenges him to a gunfight, where the rabbit shows his own skill with a shooting iron. The duel is cut short when the 5:15 departs, which Sam goes after to rob. Much to his chagrin, however, Bugs also appears to save the train from Sam. After a few failed attempts to blast Bugs (due to taking too long with his countdown), Sam decides to settle this with a game of chicken involving trains.

Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: Bugs tries to get Sam to agree to this kind of fight. Sam agrees (albeit reluctantly), but soon tires of it when he realizes Bugs is too smart for his attempted cheating in this fight.

Counting to Three: During the train chase, Sam gives Bugs to initially the count of five not to save the 5:15 train before he shoots him. But he only reaches "four" before crashing into a post. Then Sam tries to reduce the count, first to three and then to two, but each of his efforts are foiled because he isn't watching where he is going, at one point crashing into a train tunnel entrance and at another, falling off a cliff while the train goes across a bridge.

Game of Chicken: The ending has Bugs and Sam on trains coming towards each other on the same track. Neither of them are willing to stop theirs, and so they head for a collision course. At the last moment, Bugs' train is suddenly lifted up on retractable wheels so Sam's train goes under it and off an unfinished bridge, sending it down into the river.

Revisiting the Roots: This cartoon returns to Yosemite Sam's roots as a comedy Western villain. It's also the first in almost a decade where he's actually referred to onscreen as "Yosemite Sam" instead of playing some other character.

Bowdlerisation
Wild and Woolly Hare / int_98a72851
comment
Bowdlerisation: On almost all recent television showings in the United States (including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, The WB!, and ABC), the entire scene involving the Native American man, Injun Joe, including the part where he goes out to face Yosemite Sam and ends up getting shot offscreen (with the cowboy who was standing next to Injun Joe taking his beer and commenting that he gets free beer this way) was cut. When this version aired on Merrie Melodies: Starring Bugs Bunny & Friends (syndicated version), the part where Bugs shows off his shooting prowess by tossing a can in the air, only to completely miss it and shoot Sam in the face was replaced with footage from the 1978 TV special How Bugs Bunny Won the West, where, instead of Bugs angering Sam by shooting him in the face, Bugs angers Sam after he shoots corks in the can's bullet holes. This alternate scene was also used in Friz Freleng's Looney Looney Looney Bugs Bunny Movie. On Nickelodeon and the WB, in addition to the Cartoon Network/Boomerang and Merrie Melodies Show edits, the scenes where Sam is shot several times by Bugs in the saloon (before Sam decides to go after the 5:15 train) was cut.

Oh, Crap!: Just as the trains are about to collide, the cars on Bugs' end raise up like a grabber extender, causing Sam to pass right underneath. Sam is so fixated on this outcome that he forgets about the dead end that's just a few yards away.

Improbable Aiming Skills: Bugs brags to Sam that he can ricochet a shot all over the saloon until it parts Sam's hair right down the middle. He fires, and the bullet does indeed carom where Bugs said it would, but it seems to have missed Sam... until Sam's hat splits open, revealing a perfect part through his hair.
