Great Mazinger (グレートマジンガー, Gurēto Majing) is the second entry of the Mazinger series by manga artist Go Nagai and a direct continuation of the successful Mazinger Z. It was aired on Japanese television in 1974, immediately following the end of the first series, and it ran for 56 episodes.Several millennia ago, a powerful civilization named Mycenae thrived in the Greek island of Bardos. To defend their island from invaders, they employed metallic giants that blasted tongues of fire from their chests. However, an earthquake destroyed their island and the Mycenae disappeared. For a long while it was believed they perished right then, but it was false. In reality they were forced to seek shelter underground, and a lot of them grafted their heads into powerful mechanical bodies to survive. However they longed to return to the surface again and getting the sunlight, fresh air, and unpolluted water back. Many centuries later, Dr. Hell and Dr. Kabuto conducted research on Bardos and through different means both of them reached the conclusion that their civilization was still alive. Dr. Hell decided on allying himself with one them. (Which turned out to be a bad move). Dr. Kabuto suspected the Mycenae were preparing to return to the surface and take it back from humans and he decided to start taking precautions. When his son and his daughter-in-law were mortally injured in a laboratory accident that went awry, he turned his son into a cyborg to keep him alive and revealed to him his plans and his fears. Kenzo Kabuto agreed to work secretly to prevent the Mycenae invasion. After the ending of Mazinger Z, Mazinger Z was easily destroyed by the Mycenae Battle Beasts. Kouji and Sayaka went to study in America, leaving the defense of Earth on the hands of Tetsuya Tsurugi and Jun Hono, two combat-pro orphans who are slightly Darker and Edgier compared to Kouji and Sayaka. Piloting Great Mazinger -an upgrade to Mazinger Z, built by Kenzo, Kouji’s Not Quite Dead father, by improving upon his father’s plans- and Venus A, Tetsuya and Jun go to battle the Mycenae Empire, led by the Emperor of Darkness, and eventually Tetsuya becomes the Worthy Opponent of The Dragon, The Great General of Darkness.Considered Darker and Edgier than its predecessor, Great Mazinger was less successful and less popular among fans. It was followed by the next, and final, entry of the trilogy, UFO Robo Grendizer. There were several crossovers among it and other Go Nagai series, such as Getter Robo and UFO Robo Grendizer, and the two main characters reappeared in Mazinkaiser.A Character Sheet is now in construction.

Card-Carrying Villain
Great Mazinger / int_137f2d7 | comment |
Card-Carrying Villain: Dragon-in-Chief Great General of Darkness (Ankoku Daishogun) was very clear about his goals: he wanted the ancient Mycenae civilization returned to the surface world and felt the light of Sun for first time in milennia, and he thought conquering the surface and wiping the whole humanity out was the only way to accomplish that. However, Big Bad Great Emperor of Darkness didn't make clear that was his motivation. Then again, he was Hades. It's a bit hard not being evil when you are a God of Evil.

Great Mazinger / int_14beeefd | comment |
Perhaps, to show how Darker and Edgier this series is, the first chapter of the manga that Tetsuya started becoming the main character already have this. Jun is kidnapped and become a hostage, resulted in Tetsuya being unable to attack, and even if he can, he cant see well thanks to the snowstorm. Its the victory for the villain for sure, had Boss didn't interfere during the fight.

Exactly What I Aimed At | |
Great Mazinger / int_17122b19 | comment |
Exactly What I Aimed At: In the Mazinkaiser movie Tetsuya is fighting Angoras and Scarabeth. Tetsuya throws Great Mazinger's Great Boomerang and right after shoots Great Typhoon. Both attacks miss, both commanders laugh and ask where he is aiming at... when Great Mazinger's boomerang slices them both from behind. As he is dying, Scarabeth -Mycenae army's best tactician- realizes Tetsuya had missed his boomerang throw on purpose, and he shot Great Typhoon to change the boomerang's trajectory. So he caught them by surprise and killed both of them at once.

"Well Done, Son" Guy | |
Great Mazinger / int_1779f10e | comment |
"Well Done, Son" Guy: Tetsuya was an orphan with a ton of abandonment and self-confidence issues. He constantly and gleefully risked his life on a daily basis by fighting ancient, giant monsters from Beneath the Earth so his adoptive father approved of him. Kenzo actually was proud of him, but he hardly thought of telling Tetsuya that, being more concerned with disciplining him when Tetsuya did or said something stupid (and since Tetsuya was a Jerkass Woobie and an Idiot Hero, it happened frequently). Because it, Tetsuya was always deadly frightened of losing his father if he was not good enough, and he got a breakdown at the end of the series when he thought it might happen.

The Worf Effect | |
Great Mazinger / int_178ca149 | comment |
The Worf Effect: Tetsuya was established in both series as an excellent Humongous Mecha Ace Pilot, Blood Knight Combat Pragmatist and highly competent, Hot-Blooded Badass. In the reimaginings (Mazinkaiser and Shin Mazinger) how do you show the situation at hand is dangerous and the villain a serious threat? Simple. Pit Tetsuya against said villain and injure him or make him struggle. This trope is also used in Mazinger Z: Infinity: How do you take the alternate Dr. Hell and his plan seriously? Watch him and his army turn Tetsuya into a Badass in Distress. Venus A was also used like a punching bag by the Mycenae Warrior Monsters when it was needed to show how terrible they were.

Great Mazinger / int_19209d54 | comment |
Sibling Rivalry: Tetsuya and Kouji were a pretty tragic example. Kouji was Kenzo Kabuto's biological son. When Kenzo got reunited with Kouji, Tetsuya believed his father would forget about him now his son by blood was back. He got very jealous and argued and fought with his adoptive brother about anything and everything, determined to prove to their father that he was the better than Kouji. Unfortunately, his jealousy and his bickering caused Kenzo's death. He suffered a Freak Out cause it.

Great Mazinger / int_1c79ae8c | comment |
Those Two Guys: Nuke and Mucha, best friends and tag-alongs of The Rival and Butt-Monkey Boss long before the start of the series. Before meeting and befriending Kouji Kabuto they were two average, ordinary high-school students, but after meeting him their daily life includes battles between Humongous Mechas, fighting or fleeing from armies of Mooks, sneaking into enemy secret bases and basically surviving. Often they get -unwillingly- dragged -by Boss- in Kouji's adventures, and they provide with the rational counterpoint -and lampshading- to any stupid stunt Boss has come up with. Later in the series Boss got himself a Made Of Junk Humongous Mecha and required that they helped him to pilot it -much to their chagrin-. In Great Mazinger their situation did not get more normal, that with the monsters from Beneath the Earth invading the surface world bit and Boss demanding they help him to fight them like part of an absolutely helpless plan to woo Tsundere Jun Hono -Love Interest of The Hero Tetsuya, whom Boss can not stand-.

It is not arguable when one his older biological son was about of being killed he sent a Humongous Mecha after the people was harming him. Great Mazinger / int_24b88e85 | comment |
Unwanted Assistance: Jun was a Action Girl with a worth-of-years extensive training like mecha pilot and martial artist. Likewise, Venus A was clearly more powerful than the Mazinger Z Fem Bots). During her first mecha battle she fought the Mycenae War Beast skilfully, gaining the upper hand several times. She could have won... if Boss would have not gotten in the way EVERY TIME she was about of finishing the Robeast off, telling her girls should not fight and he would look after the Mycenae monster. Whenever she managed to shove him off, the War Beast had recovered and she had to begin again. The ironical part is Boss thought he was being chivalrous, charming and kind instead of an offensive and hindering nuisance.

Ungrateful Bastard: Tetsuya and Jun receive the same kind of gratitude and regard Kouji and Sayaka received for their world-saving efforts - none. Or even worse. In the manga episodes penned by Gosaku Ota -one of the Go Nagai assistants-, Great Marshall Of Hell warned he would blow Tokyo up unless the Home Base and the Humongous Mecha of the heroes were destroyed. People demanded the Government yielded... And they did. The Fortress of Science was destroyed, and Tetsuya and his allies were forced to flee and lie low for a while. Butt-Monkey: General Hadias's role in a nutshell, he only gets to use three of his warrior beasts in the entire series while the other six generals use much more and multicapable robotic types pretty much take over the second half of the show (although they are shown much earlier). However, he is the only general in the show to hold his own against the Mazingers in the final showdown. Similarly in Mazinger Z vs. The Great General of Darkness, Dante is the only spectral type warrior beast while the other six classes have two members.

Great Mazinger / int_4832a3bb | comment |
Always Chaotic Evil: The Mycenae play with this trope. The Warrior Monsters are Humongous Mecha with the head of a Mycenae soldier implanted in the giant mechanical body. Since the soldiers are indoctrinated to attack and wipe out anything non-related to the Mycenae civilization, the trope is justified. On the other hand, the commanders of the army display different personalities and even honorable qualities (specially Ankoku Daishogun), and even though they are not portrayed as good, they are not portrayed as proud of being evil, either. They're more like a proud race of warriors who want to return to the surface world after being forced to live underground for a millennia.

Unresolved Sexual Tension: Tetsuya and Jun. You would think the issue of them being adoptive siblings would be the main issue, but it is not. Tetsuya is an Oblivious to Love Idiot Hero FULL of issues -he is the Trope Maker for Broken Ace, Jerkass Woobie and Inferiority Superiority Complex in Humongous Mecha anime-, and he is obsessed with piloting Great Mazinger and fighting the Mycenae Empire because he thinks if he does not, his life will be worthless and his adoptive father will love him no longer. Hence, he is unable to notice Jun's very obvious advances and flirting. And Jun is a Tsundere with plenty issues herself and little tolerance for oblivious fools. So they keep their Belligerent Sexual Tension throughout the entire series.

Jumped at the Call: Tetsuya has been a Mecha pilot most of his life. He devotes himself to his job, loathes the idea of being just normal and is perfectly right with having to kill giant monsters. However he used to be a lonely orphan little kid yearned for having a father. When Prof. Kabuto told him he would adopt him if he was willing to train to pilot a Humongous Mecha and defeat ancient bio-mechanical monsters from Beneath the Earth, Tetsuya agreed gleefully. Nevertheless, his obsessiveness combined with his abandonment issues, lacking of self-confidence and self-worth and a massively low opinion of himself (that he tried to hide behind of a mask of arrogance and pride) led to many troubles and finally to a masive breakdown. Jun also jumped at the call, but she managed to get it more together than him.

The Smurfette Principle: Jun Hono was the only female character between the heroes (and Marquiss Janus the only female member of the Mycenae high command. Then again, the remainder members were humans whose brains had been grafted into Humongous Mecha, so it was hard telling). That changed during the last chapters, when Sayaka was Back for the Finale and the male to female ratio became 3:2. In the Gosaku Ota manga, Misato again was a recurring character in the last arcs, so the ratio became 3:3.

Black-and-White Morality
Great Mazinger / int_7abd339f | comment |
Black-and-White Morality: At first sight the Mazinger trilogy seems belonging to this trope since the the heroes are mostly good guys and the villains tend to be pure evil, but in reality the morality in these series is more greyish than it seems. Dr. Hell became mad after having endured years of abuse, insults and mockery from everybody -including his parents- since he was a little kid, and even when he made a good action, he usually got beaten and scorned. The Great General of Darkness wanted to take over the surface world because the Mycenae civilization had been forced to live underground for millennia and he wanted his people to once again enjoy things humans take for granted; seeing sunlight again and breathing fresh air. Emperor Vega began invading other planets because his own homeworld was dying, and several of his henchmen were WellIntentionedExtremists wanted establishing a benevolent dictatorship because they genuinely believed Earth's people would be better off. And, frankly, humans in the Mazinger trilogy often acted like utter bastards and forced the heroes to ponder why they bothered.

The Unfavorite: Kenzo Kabuto had two biological sons (Kouji and Shiro) and two adoptive children (Tetsuya and Jun). Although Tetsuya was clearly his favorite, he still showed he cared for Kouji and Shiro. However, he got Jun completely neglected, treating her like a soldier, not making anything about her feelings of abandoment and her inner tensions, and he seldom shown he cared for her. It went so far that, before dying after his Heroic Sacrifice he pleaded Kouji that he treated Tetsuya like his brother and took care of Shiro... but he did not mention Jun at all. Nonetheless, his attitude drove Jun to think she could not be dependant on someone else and to develop a very strong-willed and self-reliant personality.

Final Battle | |
Great Mazinger / int_830b0ac9 | comment |
Final Battle: It varies depending on if we are discussing the Go Nagai manga, the anime series or the Gosaku Ota manga. In the anime version, Great Marshall of Darkness sent several Warrior Monsters to attack the Photon Energy Research Institute as Demonika -his Cool Airship- stealthily approached the Fortress of Science. Kouji fought a powerful Warrior Beast but Tetsuya (who was irrationally jealous) refused to sortie to help him. Finally he deployed Great Mazinger, and Great Marshall chose that moment to attack. A Warrior Monster attacked Tetsuya as Demonika started bombarding the Fortress. Tetsuya was easily shot down and cut off reinforcements. Dr. Kabuto then commited a Heroic Sacrifice to save him. After retrieving his corpse, Mazinger-Z, Great Mazinger, Venus A and Diana A regrouped and attacked Demonika together, blowing the Mycenae army up to Hell. The manga versions are similar, but there is a very important difference in the Gosaku Ota version: Tetsuya commited Heroic Sacrifice, self-detonating Great Mazinger to destroy Demonika and the Mycenae army.

Gut Punch: In the Gosaku Ota manga the punches started when the Mycenae blew up a coast city after Great Marshall of Darkness replaced the former deceased Dragon-in-Chief. In a few episodes the Japanese army threw an attack against the heroes and their Home Base, Prof. Kabuto went through a Despair Event Horizon, the Fortress of the Science got destroyed, forcing the heroes to run away and lie low, the Mycenae burnt Tokyo to ashes, conquered Japan and crafted a Kill Sat, obliterating whole cities. Then you have the Final Battle. The heroes were busy building a new Home Base when the Mycenae army launch an attack. Misato gets sliced in half in front of Tetsuya as he is unable to do anything, Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger are trashed, Prof. Kabuto dies to save Tetsuya, and in reaction Tetsuya, realizing it was his blame commits a Taking You with Me Heroic Sacrifice. The Final Battle in the anime version was not quite so brutal, but in exchange you had a scene where Prof. Kabuto dies in arms of his son Kouji.

Near-Villain Victory | |
Great Mazinger / int_ac6ea68c | comment |
Near-Villain Victory: This series provides several examples. Two of them stand out: In the Gosaku Ota manga episodes, Great Marshall of Darkness sucessfully blackmailed Japanese army into destroying Great Mazinger and the Fortress of Science. The army bombarded the Fortress and stormed into the place before blowing it up completely, and the heroes were forced to flee and lie low for a while. Meanwhile, Mycenae army conquered Japan. In the last episodes of the anime and Gosaku Ota manga, the Mycenae army struck the Fortress and in the manga, Marquis Janus traped Misato and cut her in half, and attacked Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger separately. Kouji and Tetsuya nearly got killed, and Prof. Kabuto commited a Heroic Sacrifice to save Tetsuya. The generals of the Mycenae army laughed. Five minutes later they were not laughing.

Great Mazinger / int_b11ac9f5 | comment |
Abusive Parents - Parents as People: Kenzo Kabuto. He almost died from a laboratory experiment gone wrong, but his father saved his life. However, both of them thought it would be better not to tell Kouji and Shiro — Kenzo's sons — he had survived. For YEARS Kouji and Shiro grew up mostly alone, thinking their father died alongside their mother, though he did have the pretty decent excuse that he was building a Humongous Mecha to defend humankind. When this was revealed, Kouji was too glad to accept his father, but Shiro took a long while until he could forgive him. Also, Kenzo had no troubles slapping Tetsuya when he thought his adoptive son was crossing the line. All of it finally bit everyone's butts at the end of the series.

Sadistic Choice: It happened several times. In one of the Go Nagai manga chapters a Warrior Monster was holding Jun hostage. Tetsuya did not dare to attack the Monster, but Prof. Kabuto ordered him throwing his doubt out and attacking (in spite of Jun was his adoptive sister, Battle Couple and Love Interest). In the Gosaku Ota episodes, Great Marshall of Hell -Big Bad's second The Dragon- blew up one city and threatened with destroying Tokyo as well, unless the Japanese Government destroyed the Fortress of Science and all Humongous Mecha stored there. The Government gave in and destroyed the Fortress. Great Marshall turned Tokyo into a wasteland nonetheless.

Berserk Button: Unless your name is Jun Hono or Kenzo Kabuto, do NOT EVER slight Tetsuya's skills. As an example, an arc of the Gosaku Ota episodes has a Corrupt Corporate Executive steal Great Mazinger's plans to produce and sell his own Humongous Mecha. One of his imitations manages to defeat Great Mazinger (by preventing Tetsuya from docking). When Kenzo, Tetsuya and Jun tries to convince him to stop building Humongous Mecha, the man says they were just jealous his robot was stronger than Great Mazinger. Tetsuya immediately lunges at him, shouting he had NOT lost. And don't even try to hurt or threaten Jun or Kenzo, as Several Mycenae Battle Beasts [[Spoiler:including the Great Marshall of Hell]] found the hard — and extremely painful — way.

Great Mazinger / int_be5ada51 | comment |
Sniping the Cockpit: In the Mazinger trilogy aiming for the cockpit (clearly visible in Mazinger-Z and Great Mazinger) is a common tactic constantly employed by savvy villains... and the army when the Government turns on the heroes (which also is an alarmingly common occurrence). In fact, it happened in the first Mazinger-Z manga chapter. And in a Great Mazinger manga episode, a Warbeast is holding Great Mazinger still as Marquis Janus orders to snipe the cockpit. However, the likewise savvy Humongous Mecha builders had the cockpits specially reinforced to protect the pilot.

Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You
Great Mazinger / int_d8e0e9f7 | comment |
Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: It is both played straight and subverted: Kenzo's sons, Kouji and Shiro, grew up believing their parents had died from a laboratory experiment that went wrong. However, Kenzo's father saved his son's life by turning him into a cyborg. Neither of them told Kouji and Shiro he was alive because Kenzo was building a Humongous Mecha to repel the Mycenae invasion they predicted, and train its pilot. And both his father and he wanted to shield Kouji and Shiro from danger and psychological shock. It was not a bad reason, even if it was somewhat weak because Juzo was also building a Humongous Mecha as he raised them, even if he did hire a maid because he was so absent. When Kenzo revealed the truth to his sons, it took a long while for Shiro to forgive him, though Kouji forgave him right away. It is subverted with Kouji and Shiro's mother in the original series. In episode 90 from Mazinger Z, their mother appeared in the Institute, revealing she was alive and asking meeting her sons before telling them why she let them believe she was dead during years. Shiro was happy of getting his mother back, but Kouji was distrustful. It turned out that Kouji was right. Their mother was truly dead and that woman was a cyborg fabricated by Dr. Hell to infiltrate the Institute and destroy Mazinger from within. So her "good reason for abandoning them" was false.

Nonetheless he showed up again in the last season, his body grafted into a Humongous Mecha. One eyepatch covering his left eye was the only mark of the ordeal he had endured. Little explanation was given other than an statement of Emperor of Darkness had relived him and turned into one of his Warrior Monsters (and high commander of his army). Big Damn Heroes
Great Mazinger / int_eb81c601 | comment |
Big Damn Heroes: Tetsuya's forte. Even his debut was a Big Damn Heroes moment in the final episode of Mazinger Z, where, fresh off beating Dr. Hell, a new, more powerful army appears and promptly whups Mazinger Z. When all hope seems lost, the brand shiny new Great Mazinger shows up on scene and proceeds to hand the new enemies their butts. Tends to happen a lot in the remakes, generally kicked off with a nice, big Thunder Break.

Jet Pack: Great Mazinger had a red Jet Pack folded from its back, and a second Jet Pack (Big Booster) docked with it. It was grey, with wide triangular wings, and was equiped with a spike to impale Robeasts. Venus-A also had an attachable Jet Pack, right like Mazinger-Z.

Take Over the World: The Mycenae were an ancient civilization had been forced to survive underground for millennia. Big Bad and Physical God Emperor of Darkness and The Dragon Ankoku Daishogun wanted to return to the surface world and let their people enjoy sunlight, fresh air and clean water, and they thought take over the world was the only way to achieve that.

Technician Versus Performer
Great Mazinger / int_ef3d1b57 | comment |
Technician Versus Performer: Koji and Tetsuya has a dinstinct way to pilot their own Mazinger. Koji is the Technician, who uses his weapons in normal way, such as Mazinger's Photon powered Eye Beam as a long range weapon, pure brute force and combine it with Combat Pragmatism. Tetsuya is the performer who combines his own Combat Pragmatism by using Great's wide arsenal of weapon in an unorthodox way, such as using Thunder Break as weapon infusion, Swords as Lightning rods, more directed version of Thunder Break, his surprisingly weird way of handling swords, and covering Great with the heat energy of Breast Burn.

Unbuilt Trope | |
Great Mazinger / int_f0e85546 | comment |
Unbuilt Trope: Tetsuya is not only similar, he is EXACTLY what Asuka is made to deconstruct, word for word. He is a Hot-Blooded Ace Pilot that is so arrogant that anyone that questions his skills will have a trouble with him. That same arrogance also made him bickering with Jun, and Tetsuya Would Hit a Girl even though Jun is both his Love Interest, his Battle Couple, and adoptive sister. On the other hand, he has a massive inferiority complex, and his lacking sense of self worth and constant fear of being replaced became FAR more apparent after Koji's return, which caused so many problems that later resulted in Kenzo's death. And, much like Asuka Langley Sohryu, he had to pay a very heavy prize to learn his lesson. And in one of the Great Mazinger manga back in the seventies he had to fight nine Mass-Production Great Mazingers... Yes, he is Asuka's template, definitely.

Brain in a Jar: The Kedora. Ken Ishikawa one-shot "The Relic of Evil" revealed that the Mycenae controlled their Robeast by grafting the brain of a soldier taught to destroy all non-Mycenae civilizations into a parasitic organism, and it fused with a robot, giving the Mycenae soldier complete control. They would show up later in Shin Mazinger.

Nevertheless, in that same manga the Darkest Hour happened in one of the last arcs: Great Marshall of Hell blackmailed the Government into destroying the Fortress of Science, Great Mazinger and Venus A. The Fortress was blown up to bits and crumbled into the ocean, the heroes were forced to flee and hiding, and while they were seeking a shelter and lying low, the Mycenae army conquered Japan.

Attack! Attack! Attack!
Great Mazinger / int_ff070bbd | comment |
Attack! Attack! Attack!: Tetsuya Tsurugi is the worst offender in the whole trilogy. He is a hard-headed Blood Knight who never, ever, retreats. In the Great Mazinger vs Getter Robo feature, Tetsuya tried all of Great Mazinger's weapons against an Eldritch Abomination. None of them worked, and the monster ripped off Great's arms and melted one leg. What did Tetsuya do? He tried to headbutt it. In one of the first episodes, Kenzo Kabuto had to actually threaten him with — to Tetsuya — a Fate Worse than Death: "Return to the Fortress NOW or else you will be out of Great Mazinger... permanently." In his climatic Sword Fight with The Dragon Great General of Darkness, his mecha was damaged and running out of power and he was badly hurt after a battle when he was informed that the Great General of Darkness — the biggest villain badass of the Mazinverse — was approaching to challenge him. Everyone exhorted him to run away. What did Tetsuya do? Pick up two swords and meet his rival's challenge.
