Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })Five years ago, the young witch Cierra Pensblood broke the one unforgivable law of Witch Society when she attempted to create her own magic. Her failed experiment destroyed a research lab, scarred Cierra's face, and injured Natalie "Natty" Batsgrave — Cierra's best friend and daughter of the Orange District's Mayor. As punishment Cierra was declared a "Forsaken" and exiled to the Wilderness: the barren wasteland that stretches between scattered pockets of civilization, crawling with the Witch-devouring horrors known as "Fairies" and ruthless outcasts deemed unfit for society. Having survived the five-year term of her exile, Cierra finds herself ambushed by members of the Special Witch and Warlock Squad, or S.W.S. — an elite team of enforcers who guard the upper echelons of Witch Society — called the "Orange Crows," now headed by her once best friend Natalie. Cierra is offered an ultimatum: return with them and serve the S.W.S., or die by their hand in the Wilderness.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_2'); })Dragged back to civilization by the Orange Crows and granted the status of a "Restored" citizen, Cierra finds the world she grew up in has changed dramatically in the time she's been gone. On top of that, her one-best-friend Natalie has grown cold and distant, and Cierra has no idea how to make things right. When her first mission with the S.W.S. goes off the rails, she's forced to use a dangerous ability that links her to the terrifying Fairies and compromises her tenuous position. But trouble is brewing beyond the walls of the Orange District — trouble that means Cierra and the Orange Crows will need to use every trick up their sleeves if they want to survive. With story and character design by James Perry II, and art by Ryo Kawakami (only for the first volume), Orange Crows is an OEL Manga with a first volume originally published in 2009 through Tokyopop. In 2014 Perry self-published the second volume after raising funds through Kickstarter. Volume three was funded through a similar Kickstarter campaign in 2016.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_3'); })

In the Yonkoma and gag comics at the end of Volume 1, Natalie prides herself on the glowup she's achieved (growing out her hair, gaining almost a foot in height, and filling out her figure) in the five years since Cierra's banishment. She gleefully prepares to torment her banished best friend from a position of anonymity, but Cierra instantly recognizes "Natty" and dives face-first into the other girl's chest for a hug.

All There in the Manual: The full names of most characters never appear in the comics: Bianka's full name is Bianka Raventail, Jack's full name is Jackal Wraithsclaw. Klo, who is introduced in Volume 2, doesn't have a name that appears in print. Her name can only be gleaned from Perry's Deviant Art, or from merchandise featuring her name that was included with the Kickstarters for Volume 2 and Volume 3.

She gleefully prepares to torment her banished best friend from a position of anonymity, but Cierra instantly recognizes "Natty" and dives face-first into the other girl's chest for a hug. This happens again in Volume 2, when Cierra reunites with the forsaken Witch Clover. They had grown close in exile, until they were separated during a fairy attack. Clover pulls Cierra in for a hug, but in their time apart Clover got taller and Cierra... didn't.

Talking Animal: The spell that can make animals talk is high-level magic that not even Cierra can perform, but Bianka claims it's so easy for her she "thought everyone could do it." As such, Bianka keeps several cats that she's endowed with the power of speech. When the S.W.S. visits the city of Arx Ceridwen in Volume 2, news of Bianka's impressive feats appears to have spread well beyond the Orange District in Arx Crowfield.

Rummage Sale Reject: The overall art style of the series could be described as "Halloween punk", and the fashion appears to be influenced by emo/ punk style, early 2000's anime, gothy Tim Burton fare, and a hefty dose of Rule of Cool: Once Cierra gets back to civilization and is taken on a shopping trip to pick up some new clothes, she chooses to wear a lime green scarf, fur-trimmed purple tank top, mini-skirt, mismatched striped/ fishnet stockings (with fur-trimmed armsocks to match), and horned boots. (Ya know, to match her talking orange bucket hat.) Natalie's outfit of choice includes lowrider bell-bottoms, a punky double-prong grommet belt, a four foot long plaid tie, a navel-baring puffed-sleeve blouse with sailor fuku collar, and a truly massive black top hat that wears a monocle. Bianka wears capris with built-in suspenders under a cropped, fur-trimmed t-shirt that reads "BABY". Accessorized with a chain-smoking ushanka with cat ears.

Facial Markings | |
Orange Crows (Comic Book) / int_465780af | comment |
Facial Markings Natalie and Bianka both have marks on their faces — Natalie's is of a skull at the center of a flower, Bianka's is a grinning cat's face — that appear to be indelible. Natalie's mark existed even in Cierra's flashback to their first meeting five years ago. A background character who appears in a wasteland settlement of Forsaken in Volume 2 has the words "WHY SHY" tattooed above one eye. Three Times, a member of Arx Ceridwen's S.W.S., has the numeral "3" tattooed over his right eye and the letter "X" tattooed underneath it. One of the girls who bullied Natalie after Cierra's exile had a pair of distinct lines tattooed under her eyes. A Witch affiliated with the Free Thinkers appears to have stolen the girl's (still living) face, wearing it alongside other faces on her belt.

Would Hurt a Child: Sparticus's flashback reveals that after his childhood curse diagnosis (and after testing confirmed that no one else in his family carried the same curse), the authorities of Arx Crowsfield were willing to have him exiled — a punishment reserved for society's worst criminals — over the uncontrollable nature of the curse. It was only the intervention of a researcher who wanted to use him as an experimental subject that kept the young boy from being thrown out into the wilderness to fend for himself.

His popularity with the ladies of Arx Ceridwen seems to confuse Sparticus as much as it aggravates Bianka (who's miffed that her favorite punching bag is spending so much time with others) and Jack (who's jealous of the romantic attentions Sparticus is receiving from the attractive ladies of the Arx Ceridwen's S.W.S.).

Out-of-Character Moment: Bianka spent the majority of her and Cierra's brief acquaintance in Volume 1 either attacking or making fun of Cierra. It seems odd that Bianka would express concern for Ceirra's wellbeing after the fight where Cierra's fairy-like abilities were revealed and she ran from the S.W.S. — but Bianka is the only one to wonder aloud why Natalie isn't more invested in recovering her former best friend. Our Fairies Are Different
Orange Crows (Comic Book) / int_90d5b651 | comment |
Our Fairies Are Different: Fairies in Orange Crows are Witch-eating monsters that live in the wilderness between civilizations' walled, isolated city-states. They're impervious to spells because they can absorb magic (although it's noted that a particularly strong Warlock might be able to survive combat with a Fairy). Fairies are capable of a sort of teleportation within pockets of magically charged air known as an "arcus", which allows them to simulate flight and attack the Cool Airships Witches use for long distance travel. The only known substance that can repel Fairies is electricity, which is why all inhabited districts are surrounded by a dome of electric energy. According to legend, fairies first appeared when Witches began to attack each other, sent as punishment by the gods for their warmongering.

Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism
Orange Crows (Comic Book) / int_94f4832c | comment |
Bizarre Sexual Dimorphism: Witches and Warlocks at first appear analogous to human women and men, but there are unexplained differences in their physiology: Witches are all-female, born with small, flightless wings on their lower backs. After puberty, a Witch's wings will molt once a month (in what is called a "period"). Only Witches are capable of casting magic (either channeled through a wand, brewed into a potion, or dangerously barehanded) or using magic tools like a flying broomstick. Warlocks are wing-less male humanoids, distinguished only by their Pointy Ears. They can't use magic the way Witches can, but they do have a "craft" individual to each Warlock that appears to augment their body for combat.

Stranger in a Familiar Land: More than once Cierra comments on how she can't believe how much the Orange district has changed since her banishment — and it doesn't help that on her arrival she's restricted to the living quarters of the S.W.S., which are in the ultra luxurious high class area of the Orange District. Cierra's family wasn't poor, but they certainly weren't high class like the Batsgrave family.

Premiseville: Arx Ceridwen shares a name with Ceridwen, an enchantress who appears in Welsh mythology. The mythological Ceridwen was famed for brewing a powerful potion in her magical cauldron — the first three drops would grant poetic inspiration and peerless wisdom, while the rest of the brew would prove a fatal poison. Arx Ceridwen is at the forefront of magical research, having earned the title of "The Queen's Cauldron" for their production of magical medicines and potions. It was chosen from among all other Witch settlements to produce the mysterious and powerful Crythium Brew for the Witch Queen.

When the S.W.S. visits another Witch city in Volume 2, their counterparts in magical law enforcement are surprised to see fully sentient living hats being used as familiars. Cierra's familiar is an old, worn-out orange bucket hat called Grim. She picked up Grim while living in the wastelands. Bianka's hat is a chainsmoking, cat-eared ushanka called York. Right in the middle there's Sparticus (i.e. Spartacus, the famous Greek gladiator and military general, sort of like naming a kid "Odysseus" or "Tutankhamen"), Siegfried (a medieval German name that stands out among the more modern offerings like "Jack" and "Bianka"), Grim, York, and Clover (a bit unusual for a given name, but similar enough to other plant names like "Daisy" or "Willow").

Healthcare Motivation: Whisper was born a "commoncraft" or "simplecraft" Witch in the poor, socially disadvantaged Agricultural Hearth district of Arx Ceridwen, and was raised by her grandparents after her parents died. When her grandfather became ill she learned the only medication that could cure him was reserved for the "chosencraft" upper classes — so she studied hard and earned her way into the ranks of the chosencraft to acquire the medicine. Her grandmother was furious, accusing Whisper of abandoning the family when her grandfather was dying. After he died, her grandmother fell ill, and Whisper learned that the Arx Ceridwen's laws prevented the medicine she studied so hard to earn access to from being used on her commoncraft relatives.

No one else from Arx Ceridwen is written with the same accent, but other characters point out that she occasionally uses homophones for words she means to use ("configuration" for "complication," "walk" for "talk"), so her unique speech pattern might be an attempt at coming across more sophisticated or intelligent than she really is.
