Richard Dreyfuss briefly appears in one of his first film roles; he has one line.The novel has a sequel, Home School, published forty years after the release of the movie due to copyright issues.

It also portrays the consequences of a young man having an affair with a married woman: when Ben falls for Elaine, Mrs. Robinson lies and tells Elaine and Mr. Robinson that he took advantage of her. The latter threatens to sue him if he ever comes near his family again, and Elaine wants nothing to do with him until he gets a chance to convince her of the truth.
