After the End | |
Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_334e48a1 | comment |
After the End: Humanity came VERY close to extinction during Union's War in Earth's ancient history. Plagues, proxy wars, and a limited nuclear exchange all contributed to the collapse of most civilizations in the early 22nd century. ** The entirety of the story takes place in the last universe in existence after Lord Reach eliminated the Omniverse and alternate realities. The Prowlers and Backers used to be Sufficiently Advanced Aliens until their Space Cold War turned hot. The result was the complete destruction of the Backer species, and the Prowlers being hurled back into the Stone Age. Not to mention the various other species, civilizations, and galaxies that were likely destroyed in the conflict.

Curb-Stomp Battle | |
Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_3d699462 | comment |
Curb-Stomp Battle: A lot: The Bark Empire is described by Lord Reach as eventually fighting a multi-omniversal war against unknown forces. (Literally) countless universes were destroyed and created in units of time so small that only Lord Reach could comprehend them, while technology reached beyond science and into unknown realms bordering on magic. Eventually, a single Bark unit could easily defeat a civilization spanning hundreds of universes. The Alliance's invasion of Philoct. While the planet's defenses fend off the first few waves of invasion, once their allies are defeated and the House of Tinder sends in a fleet, Philoct's hope is gone. Most battles against a single Prowler result in billions of casualties on the human side. Now consider that the Prowlers are fighting with their equivalent of bare fists, and very few of them venture into the galaxy. Further, the Prowlers have no organized warfare, but are implied to be developing it at an extremely fast pace. One has to wonder what a fully armed and ready Prowler invasion would look like...

Humans Are Morons: Played straight in that the literacy rate of the galaxy is somewhere around thirty percent. Otherwise, many characters make poor decisions through the stories, and even entire superpowers are not immune from costly mistakes.

The Republic: The closest thing in this Universe would be the Liberty League, and even then the League is essentially an expansionist, loosely knit collective of planet-states.

Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_593d7cbe | comment |
Designated Villain: Lord Reach is the closest to an antagonist, but never does anything even close to evil. That is until one finds out about Reach destroying the human race, becoming the dictator of a xenophobic expansionist machine empire, and destroying the Omniverse. EVEN THEN, Lord Reach is more of an anti-villain.

Genghis Gambit: All leagues and alliances are ultimately doing this. Due to the massive ethnic and cultural differences between planets, the only thing capable of holding them together is the threat of a bigger enemy. Unfortunately, this bigger enemy usually ends up being other humans or old allies.

The Extremist Was Right
Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_64d3ffd8 | comment |
The Extremist Was Right: The Liberty League and the Monocrat are the only important entities who realize the true threat of the Prowlers and the need for a united humanity. However, this opinion makes the former despised for its radical views, while the latter must hide his true ideals. This ends up proving true when the Prowlers invade and wipe out humanity.

Repressive, but Efficient
Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_6c3553cd | comment |
Repressive, but Efficient: One of the points the book makes. While the Liberty League provides representation and voting for its citizens, it is a corrupt and bloated state that requires itself to be in a state of constant warfare to distract its citizens from its failures, and even then most of those citizens end up voting in demagogues. That's not to say that the [[{Rival}Alliance for Prosperity]] is any better, and in many ways is actually worse. However, the Perseus Dominion is fairly authoritarian and has the strongest military in the galaxy, as well as one of the best standards of living. Reach's Bark Overstate is heavily implied to be this trope, and its success is attributed to it, as all units in the state contributed everything they had to an endless war effort.

Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_7583ecbf | comment |
Morality Kitchen Sink: The entire point of the novel. Nobody is ultimately good, evil, or grey, but rather do what they do simply due to the scale of Perpetualism and Ethicalism. Some characters land on different ends of the scale, but ultimately the point is that there is no morality, but simply what is and what is not.

The Federation: Averted. There is no united humanity, and most planets are independent states. Leagues do exist, however, but are clumsy military alliances at best. {Zigzagged} in the case of the Liberty League since while it is a decentralized federal republic, it is still not a united nation.

The War of Earthly Aggression
Kings And Men Ate Bread / int_aa596c58 | comment |
The War of Earthly Aggression: The Union of Greater Earth once waged a war on the colonies that had declared independence during Union's War, but failed to bring them back into the fold due to a fleet mutiny. Earth is seen as the orchestrator of all evil by the Liberty League and Resistance. This is mostly true as Greater Earth supports the current (very divided) state of the galaxy. {Justified} since Earth lacks the resources to stand up to other powers, and prefers to play them against each other.

Democracy Is Bad: Subverted. While the book certainly has a very authoritarian feel to it, one the author's conclusions are that democracy is good when it is full of educated and well-intentioned folks, or as a tool for preventing bad leaders from emerging. However, throughout many stories in the book, few featured democracies that can win against authoritarian societies.
