In many adaptations, characters can hold different levels of authority to what they were in the source material. The receptionist can become the CEO, sidekicks can become team leader, the Evil Overlord can become The Dragon. For whatever reason, this character has a visibly different rank to what they were in the source material. May at times accompany or be the result of a change in ability to justify their new rank. In the original M*A*S*H novel, Frank Burns was a captain. The movie changed his rank to major, presumably so that he would outrank Hawkeye and company, and this was maintained in the subsequent TV series. | |

Arrow Quentin Lance starts off as a police detective like his comics counterpart, but he manages to achieve much higher positions including Da Chief and later Deputy Mayor followed by the actual Mayor of Star City. His comics counterpart, Larry Lance, didn't get to live long enough for such rank-ups Damien Darhk is the leader of HIVE in this version, along with a contender to be heir to Ra's al-Ghul. Gotham: Gillian Loeb is typically the captain of the GCPD lithe night the Waynes were murdered, such as in Batman Begins and the story arc "Wrath Child", while here he's already commissioner. Outside a brief period in the aftermath of Knightfall where she briefly replaced her husband, Jim Gordon, as commissioner, Sarah Essen never held a rank higher than Lieutenant. Here, she's a captain. Outside the aforementioned Batman: Gotham by Gaslight and The Nail, which are Elseworld stories, Harvey Bullock had only gotten as far as lieutenant (replacing the also aforementioned Sarah Essen after her death at the Joker's hands in the penultimate issue of Batman: No Man's Land) before he was temporarily forced off the GCPD in the aftermath of Officer Down. Here, he's briefly a captain. |

The Dark Knight Trilogy: Before becoming commissioner, Jim Gordon was a lieutenant during Batman's first year and became captain towards the end of it before becoming commissioner. During Batman Begins, he's only a sergeant and promoted to lieutenant towards the end, and through half of The Dark Knight before taking his traditional rank as commissioner. While he still takes his comic role as Wayne Enterprises CEO, Lucius Fox starts off as the head of the Applied Sciences Division, whereas his counterpart in the comics was introduced as already being the CEO. |

Wolverine and the X-Men: Wolverine has been made team leader rather than Cyclops. Justified, as Cyclops was originally true leader prior to the series, but too much trauma made him emotionally unable to keep leading. Barristan Selmy becomes Hand of the Queen for Daenerys Targaryen in the books, but due to his Death by Adaptation that position instead goes to Tyrion Lannister. Battlestar Galactica (2003): Zig-zagged in the case of William Adama. Unlike original series Adama, he's not the absolute leader of the human race and has to share power with Laura Roslin, and while he was equals with fellow Battlestar captain Cain in the original series, she outranks him in the reimagining. However, once Cain dies, he becomes the new Admiral, a title original series Adama never held. Played much straighter with his son Lee "Apollo", who was just the leader of Blue Squadron in the original and the CAG (Commander of the Air Group) in the reimagining and eventually becomes the commander of the Pegasus. Zig-zagged again with Gaius Baltar. The original Count Baltar originally served on the Council and had enough authority with the Cylons to think he was using them, but Gaius was never anything but a brilliant scientist and had little authority with the Cylons, but eventually became Roslin's vice president. |
