For some people, just saying hello is too easy. Where's the fun in that? It's much more entertaining to greet someone by attacking them out of nowhere to see how they react. Why? Why not! Maybe you're a Trickster Mentor putting your student through Training from Hell and making sure they stay on their toes. Maybe you're sizing someone up as a potential ally and you want to find out what they're capable of. Maybe you have an ongoing rivalry with them and this time, you hope, will be your turn to win. Maybe you just like to fight. Whatever the reason, saying hello to a friend or a potential new friend by attacking them makes much more of an impression than just saying hello. Not to be confused with Let's You and Him Fight, which is when the attacker honestly believes that the other is an enemy, instead of knowing they're not an enemy but attacking them anyhow for fun and/or profit. Compare Stab the Scorpion and Stab the Salad, in which it only looks like an attack. Closely related to *Click* Hello and *Twang* Hello, but rarely actually employs those tropes. It does, however, often involve a Dynamic Entry or "Hey, You!" Haymaker. The Glomp may appear like this to a bystander who doesn't know the parties involved (especially if it is done by surprise), as it can easily blur the line between 'hug' and 'assault'. |

In Kanon, Ayu leaps and tackles Yuiichi every time she meets him on the street. Eventually, he gets used to it. And occasionally dodges, sending her crashing into the ground/telephone poles. Played for adorable. Air (also produced by Kyoto Animation) does the same thing with Michiru tackling Yukito (much to his annoyance). Again, played for cute. |

Ranma ½: "RANMA! Prepare to DIE!" was occasionally Ryouga's way of saying hello to Ranma. Ranma had a lot of Trickster Mentor versions of this. Ranma does the same to his enemies, he just saves the "Hello" part for after the "Attack" part. |

Isshin kicks Ichigo around a little early on in Bleach. In fact, he makes it a family tradition, as he does it many times throughout the series. Also, in a flashback during the Soul Society arc, Yoruichi does this to Soifon (and also to young Byakuya in the manga) when she first meets her during one of Soifon's training exercises. Later Soifon becomes her bodyguard. Nel Tu often tends to say hello to Ichigo with a super headbutt to his stomach... Sometimes intentionally. |

The Desert Storm: When Obi-Wan returns to Mandalore in Minding the Gap, he is welcomed by Bo-Katan who greets him with a forearm clasp before abruptly stepping back and decking him across the face so hard that she breaks his nose. When Obi-Wan asks her why she punched him, her only response is that he'll "figure it out". The reason she punched him was because he unknowingly impregnated her sister Satine during the Sa Sarad arc.

Dragon Ball: Original Dragon Ball: When Chi-Chi meets Master Roshi for the first time, Chi-Chi is skeptical that it is really him, and hurls a blade at him with his back turned, thinking that if he's really Master Roshi, he'll sense and dodge it. He does sense it and tries to block it with his cane, but the blade slices through the cane and nails him in the head. Dragon Ball Z: When Goku and Gohan are introduced to the Old Kai, Goku decides to test his prowess by firing a tiny ki blast at him. He fails to see it coming and it knocks him on his ass, causing Goku to be disappointed that the man is so weak. Happens multiple times on Supernatural: In the very first episode, Dean breaks into Sam's house and Sam attacks him before he realizes who it is. In Season 2, the same incident is echoed in Dean's Wishverse! when he breaks into his mother's house and Sam attacks him. When Dean escapes from Hell in Season 4, first Bobby and then Sam greet him this way, assuming he is some sort of monster. In the same episode, Bobby and Dean summon Castiel and try and kill him when he arrives. When Dean is thrown into the past, his mother Mary greet him this way. When Dean is thrown into the future, his Bad Future self greets him this way, as does a woman from the camp who mistakes him for his Jerkass future self. |

In Buck Godot: Zap Gun for Hire, this is basically the standard method of greeting between Hoffmanites like the main character. We see this early in The Gallimaufry, where he runs into his uncle Frakkus, and they engage in a lengthy battle until interrupted by a marine-squadron (which they then proceed to demolish together). Frakkus later mentions that Hoffmanites find handshakes to be "lacking in substance". And that's just casual greetings. They start courtship with high explosives.

This trope is at the heart of the relationship between Hercules and Thor. More often than not, when the two meet, Hercules, more of a Boisterous Bruiser than the God of Thunder, takes the opportunity to sucker punch or tackle the Odinson, causing Thor to respond in kind. As both are Physical Gods and the mightiest representatives of their respective warrior culture pantheons, it's understood that this is their thing, despite the considerable collateral damage their "horsesplay" causes.

Ed, Edd n Eddy: In the opening to "A Twist of Ed", two of the Kanker Sisters, Marie and May, do this to their "boyfriends" Double D and Ed respectively before restraining and kissing them. After Double D finds Marie's lipstick in his backyard, with it being implied she purposely left it out for him to find, he freezes in fear and glances around before she suddenly lets out a loud "YAHOO!" and tackles him from behind, knocking him off-screen and snatching her lipstick back. The next shot she greets him with a chipper "Hiya, dreamboat!" as she ties him in a knot with his own hat before dropping him to the ground, applying her lipstick, and smirking at him to pucker up. It is more downplayed with May but still present. When Ed is searching a drawer for a spoon, he pulls May herself out of it but fails to initially notice her and simply throws her across the room. She then greets him from behind with a surprise Bear Hug while slyly flirting with him, finally catching his attention and making him look panicked. Barley a second later though, she drags him backwards and we see via the spoon's reflection that she pulled him to the ground and is pinning him down by sitting on top of him and holding him down before slowly leaning towards him with a kissy face.. |
