The relationship between the supreme deity of a setting and the devil or The Anti-God can vary wildly. Usually they're arch-enemies, sometimes allies or friendly enemies. Maybe the latter works for the former. Sometimes, however, Satan's relationship with God is more personal than just a former servant, and the God of Evil isn't just the Foil to his God of Good. Sometimes, they're family. Given God is supposed to have directly created the angels, especially Satan, it's easy to interpret them as His children. With this, the Devil is as much the ultimate rebellious son as he is a rebel angel. Maybe that's why he often hates humanity; he's jealous of the attention they get from his Father. Satan may not even truly hate God, just want his attention. This can work to make Satan's status as God's enemy all the more personal by being his son, or make the devil more sympathetic through a family. If God and Satan Are Both Jerks, God could be Satan's Freudian Excuse. Other angels, mainly Archangel Michael, would complicate things by being the other children and Satan's siblings. Of course, not all supreme beings have some kid with Daddy Issues messing with their divine plan, but a God of Evil or The Anti-God that's as powerful as them. Sometimes, the reason they're equal in power is because they are related, most often siblings. The Divine Conflict is thus often one of Sibling Rivalry. Being siblings it often implies they have a creator, who may be the true supreme being with the Top God and The Anti-God not on top of the pecking order like everyone thought. Can overlap with Related in the Adaptation if based on religious/mythological figures, given while God created Satan religious thought usually doesn't think their connection is familial. Jesus or his equivalent may or may not enter into the equation assuming he even shows up. Often a cosmic version of the Dysfunctional Family. Supernatural All the angels are considered siblings with God, eventually revealed to be Chuck Shurley, as their Disappeared Dad. Lucifer used to be God's favorite son before his fall. His hatred towards humans is down to jealousy over God paying attention to them over him. Or less charitably, a brat throwing a tantrum. That said, he's far from the only angel with family issues. Initially Death was considered The Anti-God to God/Chuck, however Season 11 reveals the true anti-god is God's older sister Amara, who's the Destroyer Deity to Chuck's creator deity. She serves as the Arc Villain but unlike most anti-gods ends up reconciling with her counterpart and brother. The aforementioned angels refer to her as their aunt. |
