Ever since Richard Gatling's 1861 invention, the rapid-firing rotary gun has had a special place among BFGs. Because it's basically the gun equivalent of a chainsaw, there is an undeniable attraction to a gun which can produce high enough rates of fire to cleanly trim hedges, cut down trees, or, in the case of the GAU-8 Avenger, saw tanks in half. The practical advantage of having multiple rotating barrels is that the heat generated during firing will be distributed over multiple barrels instead of one, preventing overheating and weapon damage from having such high rates of fire. The Gatling gun is likely to function as a significantly more powerful version of a regular machine gun, requiring hulking mountains of muscle to move them, or some kind of vehicle, plane or boat mount. If one gets used, you can expect it to give a nice steady buzz as it spews a constant stream of death. Modern super-fast Gatling guns actually make a strange, deafening buzzing sound in the bass register (5,000 tiny explosions per minute equals 83.3Hz, similar to the sound of a very large truck engine). Some of them, like the Phalanx anti-missile cannon, sound even weirder, note best equivalents are an electric lawnmower/trimmer or a high-yield fan because they start at a lower rate of fire and then spin up to a higher one in distinct steps (in such designs they do not actually begin spinning the barrels until it fires the first shot and they require a moment to come up to speed), giving two or more separate "notes". Instead of a Dramatic Gun Cock, the sign that a Gatling is preparing to fire tends to be the sound of it spinning up unless we're talking about Russian designs that historically tend to be autonomously driven and pneumatically cocked, so only start to spin after the first shot was fired. A popular form of the BFG in fiction, and both a fictional and real-world way of achieving More Dakka via Spectacular Spinning. It may be present even if Energy Weapons are abundant in the setting, as Kinetic Weapons Are Just Better, you the creators may combine the best of both worlds and make an energy-based version of the Gatling. Usually invokes Hyperspace Arsenal, as few media depict both the guns and the vast bins of ammunition they require; the ones that do, though, often resort to depicting it via an Ammunition Backpack. See also Bang, Bang, BANG. In Real Life, rotary cannons are mounted in military planes (such as the ground attack A-10, better knownas the "Warthog"), the AC-130 plane, and on ships in Close-In Weapons Systems (CIWS). Some helicopters have miniguns. According to Cracked (and the ATF), owning one of these things is perfectly legal in the United States due to a Grandfather Clause. It's merely prohibitively expensive. |

Predator features the famous GE M134 minigun "Ol' Painless" wielded by former Navy SEAL, former Pro Wrestler and later Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, and was the first handheld minigun ever to be used on film (or in any fiction for that matter). The actors firing that thing had to be braced just offscreen, lest the recoil knock them on their ass. And that was just firing blanks. They also had to connect it to an external power source offscreen, via a wire that went down his pants. Jesse himself has stated that while the gun was suspended from an offscreen crane in early takes, later he actually managed to fire it without. According to him: "You just had to grit your teeth and hold on. It's like firing a chainsaw. It's fucking ridiculous. Why the fuck would anyone want to use something like that?"

MythBusters used a Gatling gun as the last stage of the "shooting fish in a barrel" analogy. They busted out a privately owned minigun and unleashed it on the barrel. By the time it was over, the barrel was in a million pieces and there was more lead in the fish than fish. They also used the minigun on at least two other occasions: Once, to see if incendiary rounds could blow up a gas tank (busted), see if you could chop down a tree with bullets (confirmed, it even caught on fire) and blow up a propane tank (confirmed). |

Power Rangers: The Red Battlezord has Gatling laser cannons built into its arms. One of the Rescue Megazord's guns is a huge laser Gatling gun (the other was an equally enormous flamethrower). The Delta Megazord has Gatling gun hands. The Supertrain Megazord is armed with a Gatling missile launcher. Super Sentai's Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger has DekaMachine Patrol Gyror, with Gatling guns under its wings. Years later, in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, the Gokaigers are able to summon a modified of the Patrol Striker, which has Gatling guns in its wheels; these guns are used in Deka GokaiOh's finisher. This would be taken further in Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger, which uses a classic hand-cranked gatler as the main Transformation Trinket. |

In Iron Man 2 the War Machine armor also sports a Gatling gun, which Rhodes uses to great effect against the Hammeroids. Unlike in the comics, the movie's Gatling gun defaults over the right shoulder. However, it is mounted on a flexible arm which is then mounted on a sliding rail, enabling it to shoot in any direction, including behind him while flying. |

Marvel Universe: Minor villain Gattling wears a battle suit with twin Gatling-style machine guns mounted on each forearm. Yes, he was created in the 1990s. Rocket Raccoon's preferred weapon in the Annihilation: Conquest miniseries and new Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing is a Gatling gun bigger than he is. Opinions are divided on whether to call it proof of super-Procyon strength on Rocket's part or chalk it up to Rule of Cool. In The Avengers, during the faux Vampire War, the heavily armed and armored Shadow Colonel (actually Xarus, a son of Dracula) carries around a large minigun that chews through vampires and even poses a threat to a number of the Avengers. Iron Man character War Machine typically carries one of these on his left shoulder. With his ability to integrate external technology into his armor, he can (and often does) add more. The Punisher foe Rapido has a Gatling Arm Cannon. |

Rebuild World: The protagonist Akira eventually gets a M421 Minigun to use combined with his anti-material rifle, assault rifle, or grenade launcher in Guns Akimbo. It's only possible to wield it at all due to the Required Secondary Powers of having Powered Armor for its boosted strength. Akira most notably uses this for a Recoil Boost to Wall Run, when attacking the Sarenthal Building. When Akira gets a Cool Bike with remote weapon mounts, he puts it on there and has his Virtual Sidekick Alpha use it to shoot down missiles. Eventually, Akira moves on to using a Bifurcated Weapon line of rifles starting with the SSB Rifle able to fire at the same rate; using two of those makes Akira run out of ammo real quick, causing him to buy an APC to store reserves.

While not having multiple barrels, the Gatling Deathshell from Cross Fight B-Daman eS features a two-handled crank known as the Gatling Unit. The most prominent example is probably the Gundam Heavyarms. Aside from the Beam Gatling fitted on the arm, it also carries a pair hidden in its chest. Later in the series, it gets upgraded to a double beam Gatling. In Endless Waltz it was retconned into having two double Gatlings, and four in the chest.

In King Kong (1976), Kong is taken down not by biplanes with machine guns, but by helicopters armed with miniguns. As one troper already noted, Kong is shredded. It is not an easy scene to watch. Interestingly, this movie is probably the first time most moviegoers saw a Gatling gun in action, aside from Rooster Cogburn, which featured the early hand-cranked version. After this, they probably didn't want to see it again.

Batman Batman (1989): The Batwing is equipped twin Gatling guns, used to completely fail to hit The Joker. Batman Returns has an organ grinder with a minigun in his organ, which he uses in the Red Triangle's terror campaign at the tree lighting ceremony. Batman Forever: The first car chase. The Batmobile is chased by a pair of '50 Buick Roadmasters, each with two miniguns mounted on the hood. Not that they ever reach real Gatling fire rates, let alone do any halfway realistic damage to anything. The Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne conducts a ballistics test using a Gatling gun with a different kind of bullet in each barrel. There is absolutely no reason to have this other than Rule of Cool and Screw the Rules, I Have Money! which entirely fits Wayne's persona. |

BattleTech commonly depicts many machine guns and Auto Cannons as rotary-style guns, and recently introduced the separate Rotary Auto Cannon as its own class of weapon. To wit, rotary autocannons can achieve rates of fire up to six times that of "standard" models (and still three times that of an ultra autocannon on double-tap). This comes with an accompanying increase in ammo expenditure and heat buildup and a likewise increasing risk of a temporary jam that needs to be cleared by the MechWarrior or vehicle crew before the weapon can fire again (and renders it explosive until that is done); they also have a shorter effective range than most comparable autocannons of other types. Still, the RAC/5 in particular has practically become the BattleTech universe's iconic incarnation of More Dakka. |

In the DC Extended Universe: In Man of Steel, Gatling gun rounds cannot harm Kryptonians, but they are powerful enough to knock them down. In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, one of Lex's Mooks uses a M134 minigun mounted on the back of a truck to shoot at the Batmobile during a chase scene. Later, Batman ambushes Superman with several remote-controlled Gatling guns. After groaning in pain for a few seconds from the impacts, Superman destroys them with his heat vision. In Suicide Squad (2016), The Joker's main henchman, Mr. Frost, uses a helicopter-mounted minigun to keep the Suicide Squad pinned while the Joker rescues Harley Quinn. |

In The Magnificent Seven (2016), the bad guys get a Gatling gun for the climax. In a very unusual move, it is actually utilized as its designer intended (and how the Union Army did use it) as an emplaced long-range weapon traversing only a few degrees to sweep a wide area several hundred yards away with sustained fire, and the effect is devastating. One of the title characters eventually destroys it in a Heroic Sacrifice with a stick of dynamite.

Fading Suns, in a universe where energy weapons reign supreme, the top squad-support weapon for suppressing incoming alien Symbionts is the Furystorm Chaingun - which lays down streams of high calibre bullets for a long time. There's also a Gatling Laser which is a weapon where 5 laser rifles are combined. The Gatling Laser is an Alpha Strike weapon, where each barrel fires at the same time - making this weapon an excellent choice for bringing down shields. Interestingly the Furystorm Chaingun is actually higher on the technology level than the Gatling Laser.

High-Tech and some associated books (covering Victorian-through-to-modern weapons) have details for historical and real-world Gatling guns, including the Minigun. Carrying most of them is almost impossible for most characters because they are too heavy. However, in a nod to cinema, there is a technically man-portable version, with proper grips, batteries, and an ammo backpack. It still requires very high strength and runs out of ammo very quickly. Some Steampunk-related supplements borrow those period Gatling details, because after all, the original Gatling fits well with the genre's tendency to 19th century excess. There's also the ahistorical "clockwork carbine", a functional steampunk submachine gun which uses springs and clockwork to power a miniature Gatling-style mechanism. Ultra-Tech has Gatling versions of just about every firearms type it covers which are at the low end of the high-power weapons but have four times the rate of fire and about twice as many shots. |

Chao's robot army in Negima! Magister Negi Magi used these against Mahora's mage army. They were loaded with bullets that could send the victim into a future in which they'd already lost without any possible defense aside from dodging as a functional One-Hit Kill.

All robots seem to have rotary guns in Transformers (2007), including ones made from mobile phones. There's also the famous A-10 firing its GAU-8 Avenger at Scorponok. This was a rare moment of pyrotechnic understatement for Michael Bay. A burst from an Avenger gun is less of a line of pew-pews as seen in the movie, and more like God throwing a fistful of bullets with all his might.

Rurouni Kenshin: In the final fight of the Opium Arc, Takeda Kanryuu uses a Gatling gun to battle the Kenshin-gumi and Shinomori Aoshi's shinobi. It was an era-appropriate early model, operated with a hand crank (although this was slightly undermined by the ammo belt; hand-cranked models invariably used a gravity-feed hopper). In the anime, he was stopped when it jammed after one of the villains stuck a poison dart in the ammo belt; in the manga, he simply ran out of bullets after mowing everyone down. Shishio Makoto's ironclad Rengoku has a deck-mounted Gatling gun, which his men fire at the Kenshin-gumi when they try to stop him setting sail for Tokyo to mount a coup against the Meiji government. Sanosuke defeats it by punching the water surface with the Mastery of Two Layers, creating a massive plume of water that deflects the salvo, before throwing hand grenades to hole the Rengoku at the waterline. |
