Grave-Marking Scene | comment |
This is where a character is shown visiting the grave of a loved one (or fallen comrades/brothers-in-arms in Military and Warfare Works), or possibly the spot where they died or some other Shrine to the Fallen, as a periodic ritual. May involve Libation for the Dead and Talking to the Dead. Often a Tear Jerker. Not to be confused with messing with someone's grave by "marking" it with urine or otherwise vandalizing it, which would be Desecrating the Dead. |

Sleepless Domain: Tessa is shown to visit the graves of Gwen, Sally, and Sylvia, the fallen members of Team Alchemical, throughout the course of the comic, and is implied that she visits them every day, to the point where she keeps comes home from school late. The first time we see her at their graves, she begins Talking to the Dead, and expresses her sorrow and her Survivor Guilt that she was unable to save the other members of Team Alchemical, save for one second survivor. Later on, as her mental health deteriorates, she comes home later and later, and it becomes one of the only places where she can (temporarily) regain her sanity. Said second survivor, Undine, also twice visits the scene of the event that killed her teammates; the first time to try and piece together what happened, and the second after a fight with Cassidy, who falsely accuses Undine of being behind the deaths. |

Bleach: The "Memories in the Rain" story arc has Ichigo, his sisters and their father visit Ichigo's mother's grave. During that arc, it is revealed how Ichigo lost his mother to a Hollow known as Grand Fisher (although the truth behind Masaki's death later turns out to be somewhat more complicated), and Ichigo fights Grand Fisher, forcing him to retreat. Kyoraku is shown visiting Ukitake's grave during the epilogue of the final arc, letting him know that things have finally returned to a level of normalcy ten years after the end of the Quincy War. |

Fire Emblem In Fire Emblem Fates, if Niles and Beruka reach an A support, she tells him that she's found the grave of both of their long-lost mothers. If one more support talk is obtained, they decide to do this and have a Relationship Upgrade. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, An early quest has the Player Character search for their father Jeralt, finding him visiting his wife's grave. Jeralt is buried beside his wife after he dies in Chapter 9, and before the Final Battle, the player visits his grave to choose someone to give his ring. In the Paralogue "An Ocean View," Seteth goes to where his wife is buried, not for a visit but to kill some Western Church extremists occupying the land. He and Flayn do make time for a grave visit after the battle, though. In Fire Emblem Engage, in the ending slideshow, Hortensia, second princess of Elusia, visits her father's grave if she survives until the end of the game. |

Arrow Subverted in that when Oliver Queen and Sara Lance were Lost at Sea, headstones were put up for them. When they turn out to be Not Quite Dead we have scenes of both characters visiting their own graves. After Sara is killed she's buried in her previously empty grave, whereupon it's played straight by those mourning her. In Season One, Thea Queen tells Oliver of how she would visit Oliver's headstone to pour out her troubles, and laments how she felt closer to him then than to the emotionally-distant brother who returned to her. The flashback scenes in "The Return" show a teenaged Thea visiting Oliver's grave, but now only as a means of rendezvousing with her drug dealer. After Tommy Merlyn catches them and reprimands her, Thea is later shown bringing flowers like she used to. Season 4, the flash-forwards show Oliver standing over someone's (eventually revealed as Laurel Lance's) grave openly weeping and vowing to kill the one responsible. However, these turn out to be immediately after the funeral, and thus not truly this trope. Played straight in the Season Finale, where he visits it again and acknowledges Laurel would not have approved of the things he's done, "But you were always better than me. It's what I loved most about you." As part of The Reveal that she is Robert Queen's illegitimate daughter, Emiko Queen is shown visiting his grave. However she's later revealed to be a terrorist intent on destroying the Queen legacy out of revenge for being disowned by her father, so this may well have been Evil Gloating, or repressed guilt (she found out about the bombs planted on the Queen's Gambit, but didn't tell her father). |

Subverted in Alien: Covenant. David 8 is shown laying flowers on a tombstone he's made for Elizabeth Shaw, and weeping Manly Tears over her death, showing that for all his contempt for humanity, the android has at least come to love one of them. This makes the later revelation that David killed Shaw as part of his experiments to develop the ultimate lifeform even more shocking. Lyrical Nanoha: Lindy mentions to Letty in the final episode of A's that she's planning on taking Chrono and Fate to visit her husband's grave (something which is actually shown in the epilogue of the movie adaptation, with Amy and Arf also in attendence). Teana and Subaru both go to visit their dead loved ones (parents and older brother for the former, and mother for the latter) in the fourth StrikerS Sound Stage, who all happen to be buried in the same cemetary. Genya and Signum visit a grave together in the final episode of StrikerS. Presumably, it's the original Zest's grave, though it's also possible that it was Quint's. When they arrive, they find Auris nearby, who had already left behind a bouquet of flowers. The ending montage for the final episode of ViVid Strike! has Rinne and Fuka visiting Rinne's grandfather's grave. |

(Hohenheim then makes some observations that lead to Ed digging up the 'grave' where Pinako buried the monstrosity that the boys got trying to resurrect Trisha.) It turns up again at the very end, when Hohenheim apparently survived the battle-damage just long enough to get there and die smiling. An omake shows his and Trisha's souls near the grave, Together in Death. The animated 4-Koma Theater parodies this, with Pinako pointing out that Hohenheim is at the wrong grave. |

A Quiet Place. There's a cross set up on the bridge where Beau was killed in the opening scene. Regan visits the cross and places the toy that got him killed on the cross, modified so it won't make a noise (Regan blames herself for giving Beau the toy in the first place). This also serves to split the party as she slips away from her mother to do this. In A Quiet Place Part II, Evelyn takes off her wedding ring and leaves in on top of the cross to mourn her husband, killed in the first movie.

Overwatch's Christmas Episode comic "Reflections" features several appearances of various characters spending their holidays. One of the most memorable shows Widowmaker visiting the grave of Gérard Lacroix, her late loving husband who she was brainwashed to assassinate. Considering she's presently become one of Talon's deadliest weapons, conditioned to only feel "alive" from killing targets, the fact she pays him any posthumous respects implies a ton about a lingering sense of regret.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Iroh spends the day running some errands around town, along the way sharing some wisdom with lost souls and even cheering up a child with a song he used to sing for his son. Then he visits a small hill with a lone tree, uses the items he was picking up to put together a shrine for his dead son, and starts crying as he softly repeats the song again to himself. One of the saddest scenes in the series (and dedicated to the former Voice Actor for Iroh, who had recently died).

Happens twice in Dies Irae: The first one occurs during the closing shots of Marie's route where Ren travels to France to visit Marie's grave while also having a final discussion with Mercurius. Although he had been interacting with her ghost for the entirety of the novel, this was the first time he had actually visited her "in the flesh" so to speak. The second happens at the end of Rea's route where she visits and prays next to the grave of her great grandmother, Liza Brenner. |

In Iron Fist (2017), while Danny struggles to adapt back to society and prove that he really is the long presumed dead Danny Rand, he visits his and his family's makeshift grave. He discovers that someone had visited their graves recently due to the fresh bouquet of flowers there (in fact, they're regularly replenished there) and he's able to trace this back to a family friend, Jeri Hogarth, who, due to being a lawyer, is instrumental in getting Danny's title of his father's company back from the Meachums.

Batman: Bruce Wayne often visits the graves of his parents (although since they're buried on the grounds of Wayne Manor, this is not a huge effort for him). Some stories have him visiting the spot in Crime Alley where his parents were murdered, a somewhat more difficult and dangerous (admittedly not so much for him as for most people) trip: Robin (1993): While it's not made out to be a clear ritual like it is with his adoptive father Tim Drake is shown visiting his parents' joint grave and talking to them at least twice. |

In Red Dead Redemption, Jack does this at the grave of his father John Marston, who had been killed by Edgar Ross 3 years earlier, and his mother Abigail, who had died recently of disease, in depressingly sad rain to set the mood. In the end credits of the prequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, Mary Linton visits the grave of her fallen Love Interest Arthur Morgan (which has a Celtic cross headstone signifying his Welsh heritage), and demonstrates that despite everything that happened between them, she still cares for him. If he was played honorably through to the very end, then his grave is also adorned with a bunch of flowers to add a bit of cheerfulness to this otherwise bittersweet scene. John Marston can also visit the graves of his fallen comrades, including Arthur, for the "Paying Respects" achievement. If the player reaches 100% Completion, John also visits said grave and writes on Arthur's journal as "Crash of Worlds" (a reprise version of "Unshaken") plays in the background, and says, "Guess we're just about done, my friend." If you check the journal, you'll see that unlike most of the mediocre-to-average drawings of John, it's actually a very beautiful drawing of Arthur's grave with what he said written on it. |

Filipino anime Barangay 143 opens with two instances of these. In the Philippines, Coach B visits the grave of his dead son Baste (captain of the local basketball team who was shot dead by a riding-in-tandem gang) in the pilot; and in South Korea, in the next episode, Bren T. Park (hitherto captain of his own basketball team) visits the graves of his entire family—father, mother, and little sister—who all perished in a frozen lake en route to his last game.

Used as a framing device for Saving Private Ryan. The movie opens with an old soldier visiting the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial to pay respect to the men he fought with in World War II. Of course, it's only at the end of the movie that the audience discovers who the old soldier actually is ( the titular character, Private James Francis Ryan), and to whom he's paying respect ( Captain John H. Miller).

Gunslinger Girl Jean is shown visiting the grave of his dead fiance who was killed in the same carbombing that killed his sister Enrica, sparking off his Roaring Rampage of Revenge. He gets into a confrontation with Sophia's brother who gives him a What the Hell, Hero? speech about not avenging her (not knowing of his work with the Agency). Jean in turn is upset to see he's become a member of a radical organization opposed to the terrorists who killed Sophia. Marco is shown at the grave of Angelica, which is conveniently in the Agency compound as it's a former monastery. He denies that he'll be caring for her grave, but says he's going to become The Handler of another cyborg instead. Toward the end of the series, a wounded Jean (helped by a female soldier who was a childhood friend of Enrica) puts flowers on the grave of his brother Jose who was killed in the Final Battle. He notes that he has many more graves to visit. |

Michael's mom insists that he go visit his dad's grave at least once (he was overseas when his dad died), and while he does, it's so he can inconspicuously get a document from a spy who owed him a big favor, as father and son were on very bad terms before the former died.

In "Repeat", Shinji and Gendo visited Yui’s grave. Shinji thought about dissuading his father from proceeding with his plans, but he realized right away that he’d be wasting his time, so he called his father out on abandoning him. |

Parodied in Spongebob Squarepants where Mr. Krabs witnesses Squidward sadly leaving flowers at a grave. After he leaves, Mr. Krabs walks up to tombstone and reads off it. It says "Here Lies Squidward's Hopes and Dreams." ..."What a baby." At the end of "SpongeBob Versus the Patty Gadget", SpongeBob collapses after the fight and we're shown a close-up of the spatula dropping from his hand. It immediately cuts to Squidward placing flowers on the grave, which SpongeBob then dances on, celebrating the titular Gadget's demise. |
