Location Theme Naming is just what it sounds like - a group of characters all named after places. Like Edible Theme Naming, this tends to be done in less serious works, because a large group of people all named after locations is faintly ridiculous. Characters whose names follow this theme tend to be named after locations in one area, such as streets in New York or restaurants in Tokyo. In some cases, different groups will be named after locations in different parts of the world, so one might end up with, say, a group of people named after Italian rivers fighting a group named after German towns. A variant is to name characters after directions, such as up/down/left/right or north/south/east/west. This tends to be more common in Japanese works. |

The main band of characters in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are named for directions Kamina (above/up), Simon/Shimon (below/under), Yoko (beside), Nia (a play on near), and Rosshiu (an anagram of ushiro, behind). Darry and Gimmy use Theme Twin Naming to fit nicely into this. (Dari = hidari, or left, Gimi = migi, or right.) All of these relate to some parts of the main band's personality: Simon looks up to Kamina, Kamina sees Simon as something to help improve himself, Yoko is loyal, Nia is close, Rosshiu is somewhat untrustworthy, and Darry/Gimmy are siblings.

Discworld In early books, gargoyles were named after the streets they were on (such as Cornice-overlooking-Broadway). Members of the Guild of Gamblers are often named after towns and cities, like Doc Pseudopolis or Scrote Jones. It's a Discworld axiom (but one that, fortunately for the Guild, few seem to know) that you should never play cards with someone named after a city (or named Doc). |

In Hotel Artemis, when a patient is admitted, they get assigned to a specific room, which all have names of different cities, and they take on that name as an alias as they're being treated. At the start of the film, there's already a Mr. Albequerque and a Ms. Nice (as in France). When the bank robbers are admitted, the one in the most dire straits is assigned the Honolulu room, and becomes Honolulu. His brother, in less trouble but still needing treatment, is dubbed Waikiki. Even the orderly is dubbed Everest (likely because he's a mountain of a man), but the lady in charge is just The Nurse.

Mass Effect: The Human Systems Alliance Navy uses this trope as the naming convention for all of its ships. Dreadnoughts are named for mountains on Earth such as Everest and Kilimanjaro. Cruisers are named for Earth cities such as Madrid and Tokyo. Frigates are named after famous battles in history such as Normandy and Agincourt. The only exception are Carriers which are named after famous people like Albert Einstein and Benjamin Davis. Salarians have very long names that derive from the locations where they were born. A Salarian's full name includes: the planet they were born on, the country, the city, the district, their family name, and finally their given name. An example would be: Gorot II Heranon Mal Dinest Got Inoste Ledra. In this case, the first name is "Ledra" and the family name is "Inoste", while the rest are the locations in order from planet down to district. In addition to a family name, Quarian names are also based on both the ship they were born on and the ship they currently live in. For example, Tali's full name is: Tali'Zorah vas Neema nar Rayya. The Vas prefix denotes the ship they currently live on which in this case is the "Neema", and Nar is the prefix for the ship they were born on, in this case Tali was born on the "Rayya". All Quarians automatically have the Nar prefix name when they are born, however, they do not receive the Vas prefix name until they've completed their Pilgrimage and have chosen a ship to live on when they return to the Migrant Fleet. The Vas prefix name can also change if a Quarian changes ships, whether done of their own volition or forced upon them, such as when Tali was under trial in her Loyalty Mission and had her ship name forcibly changed from vas Neema to vas Normandy. |

The 1998 version of Battlezone has the US-backed NSDF name their Recyclers (the backbone unit of their base-building activities) after US states, mimicking the US Navy's practice for battleships in the early to mid 20th century. Among others, the Montana is rushed in to defend the NSDF's main base on the Moon from an unexpected CCA (the Soviet counterpart) attack early in the war; later on Venus the Texas and Colorado are sent to prepare a two-pronged assault on a CCA base when the Colorado is destroyed along with the rest of the base by a squad of the CCA's new Golem walker units.
