Stealth Launched Trope. Insufficient Hats. Kindly transfer all edits to this draft.
Sun. Paella. Pizza. Gyros. Tourism. The California or Florida of Europe. These are not things that obviously evoke stories of the uncanny and macabre. Nonetheless, many writers have chosen to set horror stories in Southern Europe.
This makes more sense than it might immediately seem. The region is full of old buildings that lend themselves well to horror — ancient ruins and Haunted Castles. Additionally, many of these countries have extensive folklore and bloody histories that make for good background, from the days of Ancient Greece and Rome to the Inquisition to the Borgias to the fascist regimes of Benito Mussolini and Francisco Franco to the breakup of Yugoslavia.
Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_mobile_ad_1'); })This trope arose during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when many British writers saw Catholicism as a Path of Inspiration/Ancient Conspiracy. Thus, they viewed these overwhelmingly Catholic countries as a good place to set macabre stories. With this historical context extinct outside of Chick Tracts, this has become something of a Forgotten Trope, or at least well past its prime... except, ironically, in Mediterranean countries themselves (Italy and Spain in particular both have notable horror movie traditions).
Compare Campbell Country and Überwald, this trope's geographic neighbors. Also compare Creepy Catholicism, which usually goes hand-in-hand with this.

Melmoth the Wanderer has mush of the plot set in Spain, with the protagonist's Really 700 Years Old uncle falling afoul of the Inquisition and encountering witch-burning. Additionally, Juan de Moncada (the narrator) spends time as a monk and encountering the Inquisition, with taking its time to establish how terrible Catholicism is.

Resident Evil:
Resident Evil 4 is set in an unnamed Spanish village, apparently somewhere in Galicia, which is inhabited by Puppeteer Parasites known as Las Plagas who were worshiped by a local cult called Los Iluminados until they were locked away in a cave system in the early 19th century. They were freed in a plot to Take Over the World, the leader of the cult kidnapping The President's Daughter in order to infect her father and thus take control of the US. Leon Kennedy was sent over to find her and ultimately stop them.

While the Egypt levels of The Secret World are mostly based around Ancient Egyptian and modern Middle Eastern imagery, you also encounter and battle Deus Sol Invictus, an ancient Roman sun-worshiping cult whose mummified followers still walk the earth. The lore implies that, after they were destroyed, they kept pushing into Africa to escape the reach of the Roman Empire, founding a colony in the Congo. The Council of Venice, the United Nations of the various secret societies that rule the Earth, is also based in the famed Italian floating city.

Dagon is an adaptation of The Shadow Over Innsmouth that relocated the story from Lovecraft Country to Galicia (this probably had something to do with the fact that it was a Spanish production).

The Pit and the Pendulum: A Edgar Allan Poe story where the nameless protagonist is convicted by the Spanish Inquisition and sentenced to be executed by the oddly convoluted method of being placed in a lightless pit, strapped to a table with a pendulum swinging over him and with enclosing flaming walls above him.

Don't Look Now (both the original novella and the better-known film adaptation) is about a grieving couple visiting Venice after the death of their daughter. They encounter a bunch of disturbing events while the city is terrorized by a Serial Killer. The film especially enhances the creepiness by setting it during the winter months in Venice, where it becomes a Ghost City.

Pan's Labyrinth, while not usually thought of as a horror film, has a lot of Nightmare Fuel and is set soon after the Spanish Civil War. Both this movie and The Devil's Backbone above were by Guillermo del Toro, who while Mexican himself seems to have wanted to explore his Spanish roots.
