When a character has a run-in with something that seems miraculous (when there is a perfectly logical explanation), one can develop a bit of a complex in thinking that they are special. Rather than thinking they were just lucky, they would start to think that they somehow made it happen and that they have developed super abilities. These situations usually manifest in two ways: When a character was at the right place at the right time, the people around them will mistake them for a superhero. No matter what they tell everyone, the public have now cemented their thoughts onto the idea that this person has Super-Strength or Super-Speed or some kind of mind-reading power. At best, everyone will expect that they will solve all of their problems and then get flack when they "hold back". At worst, they will be blamed for every minor inconvenience that happens in their lives. Your car breaks down? They must have used their technopathic abilities to sabotage it! Got a headache? Obviously they used their powers to bombard your brain with psychic waves! Milk gone bad? Their fault! Best start running before the Witch Hunt starts. If the character is crazy or Too Dumb to Live, they themselves would think that they have spontaneously developed some kind of superpower through some trumped-up origin story when really they are running on False Cause logic. They think they stopped a car with their hands when the driver just hit the brakes, they think they can control minds when the waiter is supposed to bring you what you want, they correctly guess an event happening and they think they can command probability. More often than not it is Played for Laughs, False Gods, Phony Psychics and Super Zeroes either forced into (or if they're the dumb or insane type, blindly walk into) situations they are hilariously under equipped to handle and are served a plate of Humble Pie with a side of raw steak for their black-eyes. Not to be confused with Power Misidentification, where they do have powers but it isn't the one they thought, or Charles Atlas Superpower, where their supposed abilities are mundane abilities turned up a notch by plausible means. |

Despite Lisa's protests that this was a simple result of the glue expiring and the heat caused by the lights at the sermon making the bucket's metal expand, the boy sets up a church and promotes himself as a faith healer. One of his actions is to "cure" his best friend's myopia, which leads to Milhouse throwing away his glasses, mistakenly walking in the path of a car and getting seriously injured as a result. The The Orville episode "Mad Idolatry" combines the above two storylines by having Commander Kelly use an advanced medical device to instantly heal a minor cut on a native, not realising it was witnessed by other natives and the repercussions of her action: like with the Voyager example above, the planet perioidically phases between two universes and time passes much faster when it's in the other universe, letting her witness how she's now worshipped as a deity, her minor act of altruism is now referred to as the Great Healing and people now use her image to not only frighten children into obedience, but also to judge lawbreakers on whether they're innocent or not depending on whether they end up being miraculously healed in a similar manner and there's temples erected in her name led by powerful priests that claim Kelly will bless them if they do what they're told. She does her best to rectify the situation, but her efforts prove fruitless and it's not until the natives' society evolves enough that they're able to understand and see her for what she really is instead of a deity. | |

Castle: When the detectives are called to a crime scene, they find a man who was shot in the head. When the man inexplicably wakes up and he's fine, Castle thinks the man is a superhero. One episode has a bullied girl seemingly developing telekinetic powers and use them to murder her primary bully. Tracking her movements, Beckett and Castle find she even went to see a con man out of desperation that he had answers for her. Turns out it was her friend using stage magic style special effects, hoping that the bullies would be scared off if they thought she had powers; he didn't think about the mental anguish he was giving her and he certainly didn't expect it to escalate to murder. One of the bully's friends took advantage of the incident to kill her and stage the crime scene and deflect suspicion. |

Vampire's Kiss: It's deliberately ambiguous whether Peter Loew is actually turning into a vampire, or he's just losing his mind — although there's quite a bit more evidence for the latter. Later in the episode, he invades a drug-dealing gang's hideout and fights them in the dark. When the lights turn on, it's revealed that no criminals have been hurt, but Roger has somehow eviscerated himself. |

She has an instinctive ability to read other people's body language, can copy any technique she sees even once, and possesses several other gifts and abilities that are incomprehensible to other people. She has multiple cults dedicated to worshiping her as a goddess. Batman invokes this during the Batman: No Man's Land arc. One of the first things he does after returning to Gotham is intentionally draw gunfire so that he can keep walking after he gets hit, so that he can create the impression that he's unkillable, rather than armored and very determined. |

On Star Trek: Voyager, the ship gets stuck in orbit of a planet where time moves faster. From the point of view of the locals, it looks like a new star has entered the sky and caused the ground to shake. Their descendants spend centuries believing Voyager is an angry god. |

On Bewitched, when Darren and Samantha's daughter Tabitha is born, certain events lead Darren to the conviction that Tabitha is using magic for her own personal profit. The Cravitzes buy Tabitha a share of stock in a diaper company and the stock promptly goes up. Then Tabitha appears to be pointing at the names of racing horses in the newspaper. Admittedly Darren has something of a point, as his wife is a witch and Tabitha could have inherited those abilities, but Samantha herself thinks he's being ridiculous, pointing out that "she's a tiny baby!" and they don't even know for sure yet if she actually has magic. Eventually Darren finds mundane explanations for the goings-on and concedes that Tabitha probably didn't do anything. Tabitha does turn out to be a witch, but it's still unlikely a newborn was manipulating events regardless. | |

In Planet 51, the inhabitants of the titular planet think that Chuck (a human astronaut) is every alien monster Science Fiction has ever written and that he was there to invade and enslave them (when really he had no idea that the planet was populated). Whenever something goes wrong for their military (either by their incompetence or just bad luck), they think that Chuck somehow used his alien powers to do it. If there is anyone who protests their methods or their Insane Troll Logic, well obviously he used his powers to brainwash them and the only sane solution is to remove their brains. Considering their culture is very similar to McCarthy-era America, this makes a lot of sense. | |

In Mob Psycho 100, Ryou Shimazaki — one of the top enforcers of the esper supremacist organization Claw — has a technique that allows him to sense the auras of other espers, making him next to impossible to blindside (which is really bad news as he can avoid any attack he does see coming through Teleport Spam). When he is suddenly struck out of nowhere by a flurry of blows he didn't see coming, he has a massive Oh, Crap! moment, realizing that he stands no chance against an opponent skilled enough to pull off a feat as incredible as masking their aura, and immediately ducks out of the fight. Except, that's not what happened at all — the strikes came from Reigen, who has no powers and thus no aura for Shimazaki to read. | |
