Murder Ballad | comment |
A song about a murder. The murder ballad has its origins in Folk Music traditions dating back centuries, but since the 20th century has bled into blues, country, rock & roll, and rap as well. It can be told from the perspective of the killer, the victim, or (most often) a third party observer. This particular style is a rich target for genre satire as well, as the examples below show. Many of the Child Ballads, collected by Francis Child, are Murder Ballads. Many examples contain Lyrical Dissonance. Might overlap with Villain Song, particularly if the lyrics are from the killer's point of view. Often overlaps with Teenage Death Songs and may also cross over with Revenge Ballad. Very often about a Crime of Passion. Some traditional murder ballads are considered to have originated from real events, making them an interesting take on the genre of True Crime. Examples |

"Bodies" by Drowning Pool is a strange example, coming largely through Memetic Mutation. It was originally intended as a mosh-pit anthem, but its lyrics can just as easily be read as being about a person who finally snaps after being pushed around one too many times, particularly with the chorus of "let the bodies hit the floor" evoking the image of people being shot and falling over dead. The latter interpretation became by far the more popular one after a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona in 2011 that left six people dead and thirteen (including US Representative Gabrielle Giffords) wounded, the shooter having previously uploaded a YouTube video of himself burning the American flag set to the song. Through no fault of the band (who were horrified by the association), "Bodies" came to be seen as a spree-killing anthem.

35MM: A Musical Exhibition: "Leave, Luanne" becomes this halfway through, when Luanne's abusive husband murders her when she tries to escape. He gets away with it, everyone believing she committed suicide... and then, some time after her death, Luanne returns to torment him. The song ends with the husband being Dragged Off to Hell. "The Ballad of Sara Berry" is about a Alpha Bitch who cracks when someone else gets elected prom queen for the High-School Dance. She goes on a murderous rampage at the prom. |

Neko Case: "Furnace Room Lullaby", in a Shout-Out to The Tell-Tale Heart, is about a woman who murders her abusive husband and burns his corpse. At night, she still hears his heart beating, and doesn't understand why. She also covered the folk murder ballad "Poor Ellen Smith." "Deep Red Bells" is about Gary Ridgeway, aka the Green River Killer, who killed a confirmed 49 girls and women in Washington State during a 20-year period. A teenaged Neko lived in the area during the murders, and she wrote the song after he was caught. It's less about Ridgeway and even the murders themselves; rather, Neko mourns the victims for having their lives cut short, and chastises the police for ignoring the murders due to the victims mostly being poor and (in many instances) sex workers. |

I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME's amusingly upbeat number "Choke" isn't necessarily about the act itself, but dances around the prospect of gleefully watching someone die painfully. Despite the framing, however, Word of God says it's more meant to be a directed and spiteful takedown of a specific place in its entirety.

The Shield did an episode where Vic Mackey and his supervisor, Captain Acaveda, end up investigating a Mexican musician whose murder ballads were based on real-life unsolved murders. In the end, it turned out that the singer was simply trying to claim credit for murders committed by Mexican drug cartel members, with his songs based off of gossip he heard in the clubs he performed in.

The only time, at least in the first half which is more well known, that Butcher Pete is specifically said to 'chop' a person is clearly meant as a joke... But because many people were first exposed to "Butcher Pete" because of Fallout 3, a game where acts of murder and/or cannibalism outnumber acts of sexuality by at least 100:1, it's easy to misinterpret in that context. Chop, chop, chop that meat.

Frank Wedekind (author of Spring Awakening and Lulu) also worked in cabaret as part of the troupe Die elf Scharfrichter ("The eleven executioners") from 1901 to 1902. One of his best-known songs from that period is Der Tantenmörder ("The Aunt-Murderer"), in which the titular character tells the court how he murdered his aunt for her money and ends with a plea: "I butchered my aunt, my aunt was old and weak, but you judges are after my blooming youth!"

For the 1943 revival of their musical based on A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Rodgers and Hart gave Queen Morgan le Fay the song "To Keep My Love Alive", in which she recounts avoiding divorce by the expedient of murdering her fifteen husbands, e.g. Sir Aetherton indulged in fratricide/He killed his dad and that was patricide/One night I stabbed him by my mattress-side/To keep my love alive It was evidently Lorenz Hart's final work.

As part of throwing fans a curveball, AC/DC did a blues-rock song called "Night Prowler" in the same vein as the Rolling Stones' example listed above, with the Unexpected Genre Change ominously ratcheting up the tension (using guitars tuned half a step lower than normal, and playing in 12/8 time - both odd considering AC/DC's usual high energy, head-banging pub rock fare) as the lyrics seemingly describe a Serial Killer in the the process of creeping up on his victim in the dead of night to stab them to death, basically making it at first listen a hybrid between a blues-rock murder ballad and a Slasher Movie set to electric guitar. Ultimately subverted by Word of God, as it's actually about two teenage lovers consummating a Secret Relationship, despite attempts by Moral Guardians to link the song to the infamous "Night Stalker", serial killer and rapist Richard Ramirez.

The Japanese band BIGMAMA has at least two: "Koukyoukyoku 'Shinsekai'"en:Symphony to the New World, about a drowning boy who sneaks onto a ship and gets carved up with a knife for trespassing, and "#DIV/0!", which ups the ante by following eight murders and a suicide among a group of nine people driven by greed for a treasure they intended to split amongst them.

The first section of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" from A Night at the Opera. "Mama, just killed a man/put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he's dead..." This can also be interpreted figuratively, as inflicting himself with a fatal disease and expressing remorse over it.

"Blood Red and Goin' Down" by Tanya Tucker, a 1973 ballad about a young girl made by her father to help track down his unfaithful wife. Eventually, the two find her and her new lover at a roadside hotel, and after the man sends his daughter back outside, he brutally slays both of them. Unknown to her father, the daughter witnessed the murder by watching through a window, remarking that as he came back outside, her father "left them both soakin' up the sawdust on the floor."

Songs by Tom Lehrer: "The Irish Ballad" is about an Irish girl who kills her entire (immediate) family in various gory ways. She doesn't deny her crimes to the police, though, because she knows that lying is a sin. "The Irish Ballad" is, by Tom Lehrer's own statement, a satire of the Murder Ballad. In "I Hold Your Hand In Mine", the narrator sings about his difficulty letting go of the woman he loves following her death. In the final stanza, he admits that it was him who killed her. |

"Butcher Pete" by Roy Brown. Double Entendre or no, on the literal level it's still a murder ballad. |

The Key & Peele sketch "Rap Artist Confessions" is about a police detective interrogating a rapper suspected of a murder. His main piece of evidence is an album by the rapper where he openly brags about doing the deed; the artist, however, keeps insisting that he just has "a vivid imagination."

"Klavier", "Mein Teil," and "Stein um Stein" by Rammstein. Also, "Spring": The narrator is goading someone into killing himself by jumping, but when that fails he kicks him down himself.
