Formed in 2013, "FAKE TYPE." is a Japanese Hip-Hop/Rap musical group with some Electro Swing flair, consisting of composer/track-maker DYES IWASAKI and rapper TOPHAMHAT-KYO. They are perhaps best known for their stylish and well-animated music videos, often starring the morally gray Battle Couple of Baron Ham (representing Kyo) and Ms. Iwasake (representing Dyes) as they get caught up in a variety of odd situations at the turn of the 20th century, from hunting monsters to searching for desert treasure. In 2016, the group announced taking an indefinite hiatus to focus on their respective musical careers. Around 5 years later, they officially re-united with the single "BEELZEBUZ", from which they've been active since. Currently, they've started producing songs for other creators as well, including utaite such as KANKAN and Chougakusei and Virtual YouTubers.Disco graphy

Creator Cameo: The apprentice butcher in "Yummy Yummy Yummy" and "Kruel Kreator" bears a striking resemblance to the real-life Kyo. In the background of some parts of "FAKE LAND", there are photos of the real Dyes and Kyo somewhat obscured by the word "SHOWTIME!" and a rather large fly. In "At Atelier", a cartoonish depiction of Dyes and Kyo is on a poster in the aspiring animator's room. In "Managarmr", zombies depicting Dyes and Kyo appear in the back of the crowd of zombies seen in the chorus.

The Cameo | |
FAKE TYPE. (Music) / int_1b65dfad | comment |
The Cameo: The guitarist, monk, and horse from "Urban Caravan" make a brief appearance at the beginning of "At Atelier" while the artist is watching TV. The same guitarist and monk from "Urban Caravan" additionally appear together as buyers in the flee market in the music video for "Knickknack Kingdom". The same guitarist from "Urban Caravan" appears in "真FAKE STYLE" as the bartender. The butcher and his apprentice from "Yummy Yummy Yummy" briefly appear in "Kruel Kreator" when Mister Jewel Box buys a cleaver from them with the intent to kill his creation...funnily enough, right when the lyrics are about how there's "only one" of himself. Confirmed in concept art for "Deep Sea Swing"'s music video, multiple sea creatures seen alongside Baron Ham and Iwasake are cameos for past characters and content creators: Hammy and Sakie are seahorses, PPP are a sea angel, dumbo octopus, and sea cucumber, and DEMONDICE is a manta ray.

Art Initiates Life: The music video for "Mister Jewel Box" is inspired by the massive popularity of the "Princess♂" song and character from Topham's previous album, and depicts a creation becoming more well-known and "real" than their actual creator. Its sequel song "Kruel Kreator" shows the creation having now dominated the life of its creator, to the point where the creator feels the best thing to do is to kill it off for the sake of his sanity.

Later-Installment Weirdness: The music videos made before FAKE TYPE's separation had varying heights for Baron Ham and Miss Iwasake, but usually showed them around the same height, with Ham sometimes being a little taller. Humanoid Abomination: Baron Ham appears to be the deadlier one in "FAKE STYLE" until Ms. Iwasake drinks a tad too much wine, flips upside-down, and turns into a black whirling dervish that telekinetically destroys an entire ballroom. In the sequel, she slashes monsters apart with her bare hands without needing to transform. In "真FAKE STYLE", she gains the ability to manifest the form via her shadow. Iwasake's doppelgänger in "真FAKE STYLE" is humanoid in appearance, but has a gear-like mouth, and her movements during the instrumental break show her body turning into fire. After being bested, she melts into a puddle.

Canon Character All Along: The end of the "FAKE LAND" video reveals that the elephant and lion mascot suits were being worn by Hammy and Sakie from "Yummy Yummy Yummy", who might also be Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasaki's children first seen at the end of "FAKE STYLE II". A variant: inspired by the FAKE TYPE. videos, the artist in "At Atelier" creates characters based off Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake, that being a living camera and palette: in the final chorus segment, the witch uses her magic to actually turn them into Ham and Iwasake. At the end of the music video for "Kruel Kreator", Mister Jewel Box's brain is removed and ends up becoming Kyo’s own logo (a blue brain with wild eyes, stick arms and a top hat). Additionally, the titular Kreator is actually the fan artist from "Mister Jewel Box", who also turns out to represent DEMONDICE.

More Deadly Than the Male: In most of the videos that depict Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake in battle, the former is usually Badass Normal with a Sword Cane, while the latter rarely fights, but is a Humanoid Abomination when she does. In both "FAKE STYLE" and "Witch Hat" she turns into a Living Shadow capable of dishing out a Curb-Stomp Battle to many enemies at once, while in "BEELZEBUZ" she turns into a giant Man-Eating Plant with Combat Tentacles and, inexplicably, energy swords. Subverted in "FAKE STYLE II", where both fight on equal footing and Ms. Iwasake does not transform, though that doesn't stop her from tearing enemies apart with her bare hands.

FAKE TYPE. (Music) / int_ce6555f0 | comment |
Lighter and Softer: "La Primavera" and "At Atelier" have been the most lighthearted of the group's videos, focusing on an artist falling into her spring painting and an animator following her dreams instead. Some of their songs can also be fairly light and cute-sounding compared to their darker and more wild usual fare, such as "HAPPY SUNDAY!!" and "Carry Lucky".

"Ray of Hope" Ending: In the end of "Knickknack Kingdom", Zeney is thrown back out onto the streets after being released from prison, left with nothing except the clothes on her back. However, Baron Ham and Iwasake appear and give her a gold coin to help her get back on her feet. It's also implied that the two may have bailed her out, as they can be seen watching in the corridor during the prison scene.

Baron Ham appears to be the deadlier one in "FAKE STYLE" until Ms.

Sequel Episode | |
FAKE TYPE. (Music) / int_eb37fe59 | comment |
Sequel Episode: "FAKE STYLE II" is a sequel to "FAKE STYLE", where Ham and Iwasake are now much older but are still very capable, rich from their bounty hunting and called to deal with some monsters on Monster Island. "At Atelier" acts as a sort of sequel to "La Primavera", having a similar theme of artistry and the same light, jaunty vibe, and the titles of both are two words taken from another language. The accompanying music video furthers the parallels with the "La Primavera" music video, featuring the cherubs from that video, a recreation of Ms. Iwasake falling into La Primavera with "At Atelier"'s protagonist, and Ham and Iwasake leaving through the same sakura archway shown in "La Primavera". In addition, rather than link to the previous music video for "FAKE LAND", the title card at the end of the video instead links to the music video for "La Primavera". "Mister Jewel Box" and "Kruel Kreator" are sequels to "Princess♂", dealing with their beleaguered creator’s reaction to their popularity.

Pictorial Letter Substitution: The band's usual logo has the A in "FAKE" replaced by FAKE-chan, one of the band's mascots, while the Y in "TYPE" is drawn like a radio tower, complete with signal. On the FAKE BOX album, in addition to the FAKE-chan A and radio tower Y, the O in "BOX" is drawn with swirls inside it. The FAKE JAZZ album replaces the two Zs with high heels, and Mochi-kun, one of the band's mascots, is sitting on top of the second high heel. The in-video logo for the "FAKE LAND" music video has the hole in the first A replaced with a grin, while the hole in the second A is an eye.
