Unwinnable by Design: Downplayed, but if you start a level with a team that only uses physical attacks and it happens to have a blue Caterkiller which ignores physical damage, you've effectively lost the level. You can simply restart it, of course, but if it's a Campaign, Beyondering or Event level, you've wasted the energy spent to start it.

The Medic: Certain characters have skills that can heal the party. For example: Beat's MAX Skill "Theatre of Sound" heals the party for a small amount of health and creates some blue and green star tiles. Rolf's Star Skill has him throw out a Dimate to the party member with the lowest health. Dr. Curien's Star Skill, "Bio Reactor", has him convert the target's health into the weakest ally's own as well as adding Mana to any downed allies, making reviving them much easier. Tails' MAX Skill has him deploy a support bot which restores the health of his allies and grants them Regeneration if the Rally meter is at level 3. Chuih's MAX Skill grant their one ally with lowest health Regeneration by summoning a herd of Chuchus and if the Rally meter is at level 3, they give it to the whole team instead.

comment
Awesome, but Impractical: Dr. Curien's abilities which include his Star Skill converting a portion of a target's health into an ally's own as well as converting Star tiles into Super Star tiles when a match-5 is made are really great, but said abilities mostly revolve around reviving allies such as to make use of his passive ability to grant a damage buff to them. This doesn't sound good if you're three-starring levels, and is downright useless in Survival Mode, where allies can't be revived.

Magic Versus Science: After Stage 108, Wren notes that he could push everyone's worlds back if he found the device that's causing all the trouble, only for Ax Battler to point out it could have been caused by magic instead since Dremagen appears to be a sorceress of sorts. Wren notes that if that was the case, they'd be in trouble.

Gameplay and Story Segregation: Several heroes appear in cutscenes in Campaign Mode despite not being playable in that mode. Wren is the first you'll meet, after beating Stage 47. In a broader sense, there's no correlation between when you unlock (or are likely to unlock) a Campaign Mode hero, and when they actually appear in the story. It's entirely possible for heroes you haven't unlocked yet to join the party out of the blue, or for a hero you've been using for weeks to suddenly introduce themselves as though they've never met their teammates before.

Joke Character: Chester the Chest Monster Dremagen sics on you on April Fools. It has pathetically-weak attacks which give it the Taunt buff... in a battle by itself. Chester shows up again in a 4th of July event, backed up by a full team, and his attack now dishes out Taunt to the entire team, thus making the effect equally worthless. Downplayed, if not averted outright, when Chester returns for April Fools 2020. While his own attacks are still weak, he's now backed up by allies who are actually pretty strong... strong enough that together, they defeat Dremagen herself and rescue their dimension. His situation is also decidedly not funny. Allegedly Free Game
Sega Heroes (Video Game) / int_97c6b148

Allegedly Free Game: While the game is free to play, buying things like gems to unlock new characters and recharge energy costs real money. How bad is it? You need to pay money to buy "hero shards" which are used to unlock or rank up a hero. You also need to pay money to buy coins to level up your heroes. You need to pay money to buy "spirit stones" every time your characters gain 10 levels to remove the level ceiling from said character. And lastly you need to pay money to buy skill reagents to level up your characters' skill. While you can earn the latter three through playing normally, the former are a mixed bag- weaker characters can be earned, but stronger characters requires buying shards with points earned during Pv P or Survival mode. And the Pv P mode’s payout is extremely unfair. To wit, you need to be at a certain rank to earn the kind of points needed to buy the shards - the game divides Pv P points into Tokens and Mega-Tokens, and you can only earn Mega-Tokens when you’re at a high enough rank- that free players can only dream of achieving. So that means paying players who bribe their way to victory are better rewarded. If you dare to try Pv P against a paying user, expect the game to be tilted heavily against you. Survival mode is just as bad- you’d better be grinding before you take on survival mode because the game will tilt the board against your favor if you don’t grind.

Ascended Extra: In Jet Set Radio, DJ Professor K, though a vital figure in the game's plot, only appeared in-game during cutscenes to act as Mr. Exposition. He was playable in the Game Boy Advance port of the original Jet Set Radio, but outside of that, this is his first playable appearance. From the same game, Captain Onishima was an antagonist who chased the player to arrest them, and disappeared halfway through the game due to the whole force being freaked out by the Big Bad. He's also made playable for the first time. Ebitan has been promoted from a Mook and borderline Goomba into a playable character. Shenhua only appeared in Shenmue in the intro and in a handful of dream sequences, and doesn't appear in person until the end of the second game. Here, she's made playable. 2019 introduced Joke Character Chester for an April Fools event. He returns in 2020's April Fools with a standard team, a backstory and is Promoted to Playable.

Mascot: Sonic, obviously, though it's notable that his relevance is more downplayed here. On the one hand, he's not a major part of the Campaign until Zone 20 (which, depending on your grinding speed, can be days or months into it), his shards are hard to get and he's not even the Legendary of his collection (that, oddly, goes to Tails). On the other hand, he's still on the front of the game's artwork and in the app icon, you get his shards mainly via Achievements, and he's far better and stronger than any other blue character, by miles.

Even the Subtitler Is Stumped: When Chester returns for the April Fools 2020 event, he has a new Skill named "Star Power". Its description when you first fight him reads, "I'll be honest, I have no idea what this one does." When you get to play as Chester later in the event, you learn that "Star Power" creates three Star Tiles, an ability that would be useless for the enemy Chester because enemies can't use Star Tiles.

Anti-Frustration Features: If you've cleared a stage with a three-star rating, you can Loot it, immediately netting you the stage's clear reward(s) without you having to actually play it, which is very handy when grinding. Event stages can only be looted once per day, but campaign stages have an option to Loot them multiple times at once. Legendary events sometimes occur which given that you have the requisite characters ranked with at least four stars, you can simply clear the first stage to earn enough shards to unlock or promote Legendary characters. Some Star and MAX Skills have long enough animations that the enemy they're targeting might already have been killed by the time they connect. If this happens, these moves will either target a new enemy, or trigger their secondary effect anyway. If a Survival stage is about to end horribly such as nearly all of your teammates are down, you can simply retreat and you can retain all your heroes albeit at a small reduction in health. Do this too many times, however, and you'll eventually lose a hero for the entire run. The game has a “Link Devices” feature to enable cross-platform play between Android and Apple devices without losing your progress due to the incompatibility between Google Play and Game Center which the game uses as cloud saving.

Exact Words: Some attacks like Dr. Curien's MAX Skill "Hermit" function by dealing guaranteed damage to the target while dealing a number of hits to random targets if there are any. If the target happens to be the only enemy on the field, or they have the Taunt buff, then all the bonus attacks hit them.note For example, if Dr. Curien uses "Hermit" on one single target or the only one with a Taunt buff, they'll be hit 9 times at once. The April Fools 2020 event was advertised with a banner declaring "Free Chests from Dremagen!", similar to the previous year's event. After the first battle of the event, you realise this doesn't mean "Receive free chests from Dremagen", but "Free the chests from Dremagen's control". Running Gag: During the campaign, several of the characters comment on AiAi's gachapon-like ball he rolls around in, such as how he can breathe in it, if there are other monkeys from his world that use them and he even points out to Big the Cat that he can leave it any time he wants.
