Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_3'); })The New Order: Last Days of Europe is an upcoming Hearts of Iron IV Game Mod that is set in an alternate timeline where Nazi Germany utterly wins World War II but quickly loses the peace. Currently unreleased, The New Order focuses on the fallout of an Axis victory and its disastrous effects on the world, and it leading to a three-way Cold War in the 60s.The year is 1962. World War II ended twenty years ago with a decisively victorious Greater Germanic Reich dominating over all of Europe. France and Britain are under control of Nazi puppets. Soviet Union had collapsed into numerous warring splinter states. America was humiliated under a combined assault from Imperial Japan and a nuclear-equipped Germany. The Reichskommissariats occupy vast swaths of land in Europe and Africa. The Reich and its territories, under the one Unity-Pakt, seemed invincible and unbreakable.Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_2'); })All is not well inside the Reich however, and cracks are beginning to appear. Germany's economy, built on top of slavery, corruption, and incompetence, crashed in the 1950s. As the 60s come, the Führer Adolf Hitler, which united the Reich as a symbolic leader, is an aging man approaching his deathbed. The Nazi Party below him is dividing itself on how to lead the failing Reich into the future. It seems that a storm is brewing inside Germany that would soon consume the nation.Outside Germany, the international scene had become a nightmare like never before. Iberia, Italy, and Turkey, the former allies of Germany in the Mediterranean, formed the Triumvirate to counteract Germany in response to their increasing hostility and the failures of Atlantropa. The other superpowers America and Japan have developed their own nuclear weapons, creating a three-way Cold War between the Reich, the America-led Organization of Free Nations, and Imperial Japan's Co-Prosperity Sphere. Civil wars are breaking out across the globe. Despotic rulers oppress their people and struggle to maintain control. International tensions threaten to collapse the global order into an all-consuming nuclear war. The world now hangs on a thin line that could break at any moment. What would happen in such dark times?Advertisement:propertag.cmd.push(function() { proper_display('tvtropes_content_1'); })The mod's community can be found on Reddit and on Discord.

Dragon-in-Chief: Heinrich Himmler if Reinhard Heydrich wins the German civil war. Although Ordenstaat Burgund is technically part of the Reich, and Himmler is technically subservient to the Führer, Heydrich is strongly advised to fulfill Himmler's many requests. Further represented by the fact that Heydrich's Germany ends up depicted in-game as a puppet of Burgundy.

Fictional United Nations: Nothing like the United Nations exists when the game beginsnote unless the League of Nations still technically exists, but even then it would really only matter for its archives and residual assets at this point, but one of Speer's diplomatic paths is spearheading the creation of the Koalition der Nationen, a clear analogue to the UN to the point of potentially having a security council of the most powerful members.

Evil Versus Evil | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_1645005b | comment |
Evil vs. Evil: Germany is engaged in a Cold War not only with the US, but also with its former ally, Imperial Japan, whom has carved out an empire in Asia. In the German Civil War, even the least bad side (Speer's forces) are still Nazis, if less brutal ones than the other sides, and the only non-Nazi side, a communist takeover of Speer's forces, may have to engage in even more purges than Heydrich to stabilize their victory. Dirlewanger, one of the vilest Nazis both in the OTL and in TNO and the ruthless Bandit King of Western Russia, will likely go to war with Trofim Lysenko who has become an absolutely insane Mad Scientist, abducting random civilians or even entire villages for cruel human experimentation. In another round of Evil vs. Evil for Dirlewanger, if his conquest of the Urals goes as planned, he may seek to push further west and come into conflict with Nazi Germany and its assorted Reichskommissariats.

A Lighter Shade of Black
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_19fc58a2 | comment |
A Lighter Shade of Black: Albert Speer, though still a Nazi, is the only candidate to succeed Hitler who has a realistic chance of bringing Germany off the path of inhumanity and averting WW3. If successful, he can free the enslaved populations, restore native rule to the Reichskommissariats, pull Kaukasus into line one way or another, found a badly-needed analogue to the United Nations, and confront Himmler directly. Even so, at his lightest he remains an authoritarian democrat and is most likely to be a fascist in the Italian manner instead. Alfred Rosenberg and Theodor Oberländer are this for the Reichskommissariat Ukraine. While Rosenberg is still a Nazi and one of the chief ideologues of Nazi racial theory historically, he views the Slavs as Aryans themselves instead of subhumans to be enslaved or exterminated. Assuming his coup against the government of Reichskommissariat Ukraine succeeds, he can improve the living conditions of Slavs in the Ukraine, and he can liberate other Reichskommissariats in the East in order to form a Slavic-German state. Theodor Oberländer (a former staunch supporter of the Reich), on his part, has become disillusioned with Nazi ideology, and if he succeeds Erich Koch as Reichkommissar of Ukraine can either invite Rosenberg in to take over (bypassing the need for Rosenberg to launch a coup) or go for a less ambitious programme that leaves the rest of the Reichskommissariats untouched but moderates, liberalizes and expands Ukrainian political influence in Reichskommissariat Ukraine to the point of Ukrainian rule over Ukraine being a possibility. Assuming Alfred Rosenberg and Theodor Oberländer are seen as being light enough to cross over to dark grey, Alfred Freuenfeld steps into this role amongst potential leaders of Reichskommissariat Ukraine, being more-or-less the status quo candidate, aside from wanting direct control of Crimea — which in the Ukrainian context means he's open to making deals with Ukrainian collaborators, and has no real plans to launch major purges to bring Burgundian System (a surviving Erich Koch's plan) or brutally escalate Germanization and seize the Generalgouvernment for more slaves if the Reich falters (Hans-Adolf Prützmann's plan). While the Co-Prosperity Sphere is controlled by an Imperialist Japan, Japan's rule is overall less brutal than Nazi Germany's rule over Europe (though this is in part due to Japan's own struggles with control). Nations under the Co-Prosperity Sphere generally have fewer overtly horrific paths to go down, and more opportunities for peaceful reforms.

Multiple Endings | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_1aa08f77 | comment |
Multiple Endings: Depending on the events in game and choices made by the player, the world can end up in a variety of situations. In the worst case scenario, Himmler succeeds in his plans and brings about a nuclear war that causes the total devastation of human civilization. Not fun for anyone involved, except maybe the player. Alternatively, Heydrich successfully reunifies the Greater German Reich, turning Germany and colonies into one big concentration camp, or Goering manages to re-assert control over Europe militarily and successfully turn Germany into a nation economically powered by warfare that can continue to plague the world for decades to come. Various events outside of German borders may also tip the Balance of Power in favor of the Nazis, such as the Nazi collaborators maintaining control of London or the resistance being killed off by Himmler assuming he exerts too much influence on them, as well as America being taken over by the far-right wing or Yockeys of the National Progressive Party, allying with Germany against Japan. In the best case scenario, Speer reforms the Reich into a halfway decent country, or perhaps the German nightmare finally just crumbles under Bormann or Göring. The Japanese Empire falls apart, the British throw off the shackles of the German garrison, America returns stronger than ever and Russia is restored to some semblance of its former glory. It is a bright new world, but one marred by such sorrow created by the evils of old. Any other myriad of outcomes both good and bad.

The Gulag: Germany's concentration camps ended up developing a system of not-as-lethal slave camps not dissimilar to the historical Gulags, after economic insolvency rendered extermination unpopular in the 50s. On the reverse, several Soviet gulags liberated themselves after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the former guards and prisoners united to form the Ural League, with many of their former prisons being converted into formidable military fortifications.

Unwinnable by Design: While extremely difficult, most of Göring's tree can be successfully executed by the player, allowing the Reich to control more of the world than any other force in history. However, the final plans to invade Japan and America are quite simply impossible and serve as merely traps for the world to fall into a devastating nuclear war that will likely obliterate civilization, though perhaps Yockeys might give the slight possibility of world domination.

Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Reichskomissar Josias was apparently once a competent and relatively decent candidate for a ruler (decent as far as Nazis go, anyway). However, shortly after taking his post in the Kaukasus he was kidnapped by local partisans and subjected to unimaginable torture. The experience not only left him severely scarred, it also broke his mind. Now he rules Kaukasia as a smog-covered hellscape of brutality that makes North Korea look sensible.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_1c263b9f | comment |
If the communists manage to win the German Civil War, they face rule over a nation that has known over 30 years of harsh Nazi rule and vigorous anti-communism. To stabilize the Deutsche Sozialistische Republik, the communists will need to engage in levels of purging of reactionary elements that rival or possibly even exceed the scope of the purging of "undesirables" that Ultranazis would engage in (especially as the circumstances of their emergence means that the DSR is hated by many of the other German anti-Nazis for killing Speer). To top it off, the DSR's leadership is dominated by students without any experience in actually governing. It also turns out due to decades of vigorous censorship by the Nazis, the DSR in fact have little idea of communist rule should look like outside of scattered black market Marxist texts and viciously anti-communist Nazi propaganda. Their utterly brutal style of governing leads to actual communist nations fiercely denouncing them.

Deal with the Devil | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_1fc8335e | comment |
Deal with the Devil: The British resistance can seek foreign support to build up strength for the eventual revolution. There are three main options for foreign contacts, the first two of which are the US and Japan. However, their distance and reluctance to piss off Germany makes their aid unreliable. This leaves the third option... make a deal with Himmler. Being so close, possessing one of the most powerful military forces in Europe and having a vested interest in destabilizing the German world order, Himmler seems like a pragmatic option for the resistance to take aid from. Of course, working with Himmler brings them under the influence of his schemes, and if they do not carefully contain his influence in their movement, the resistance may just fall for Himmler's schemes.

We ARE Struggling Together
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_22569655 | comment |
We ARE Struggling Together: The Triumvirate faction formed between the Mediterranean powers - Italy, Iberia, and Turkey - out of a mutual hatred of Germany and a desire to work together and fix their broken economies. However, now that Germany is declining, the threat (and thus the whole reason for their alliance) is fading too. Add to that border disputes between Italy and the other two, and Iberian resentment at the other two for 'not paying their fair share' to keep Atlantropa from flooding the Mediterranean, and the Triumvirate seems to be on its way out. The National Progressive Party in America is a bizarre combination of Socialists and Progressives allied with Dixiecrats and Fascists, united in common cause against the political establishment and America's reluctance to engage Japan directly. Depending on what direction the Republican-Democrats take with regards to the civil rights movement, one wing or the other will win out in the NPP, turning it into either Progressive or an outright Socialist party, a Far-Right party, a Fascist party that may or may not support the Reich, or potentially a more moderate variant of either extreme. While members of the United Partisan Organisation in Ostland are united under the banner of resistance to Nazis, many of them take issue with Kovner's occassional brutality against the natives (especially those who aligned with Vituska) and his disregard for any means as long as it accomplishes his desire for revenge.

For Science!: All of the Führer successors can do this to an extent, but none of them compare to Martin Bormann, who can throw excessive amounts of money at German scientists to research insane projects such as turning lead into gold and launching a mission to Mars in the 1960's, all of which at best have the slimmest chance of doing something marginally useful and at worst just blow up and kill the research team. Lysenko and his technocratic elite of Magnitogorsk believe that their human experiments help to advance the humanity and can open the way to create human supersoldiers, but for the most people it's a little more than excuse for kidnapping and torture of innocent men, women and children.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_24321e44 | comment |
Only Sane Man: Of all the potential successors to Hitler, Albert Speer is by far the most sensible, despite still being a Nazi and a fascist. He can enact major reforms in the Reich, putting a stop to the Nazis' insane obsession with racial purity and getting rid of its pointless military excesses. He can also do what none of the others would and enact the necessary economic changes to save the Reich's ailing economy as well as significantly improving its international image. Doing all this results in him facing massive opposition from die hard National Socialists and potentially being overthrown, but if he makes the right choices, necessary compromises and stays clear of Himmler's schemes, he can reform the Reich into a semi-democratic institution, abolish slavery and racial hatred, and even create a version of the United Nations.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_258a5cfe | comment |
Different World, Different Movies: Star Wars can still be released in 1977, with some major differences from the OTL movie, depending on political (for example, the Death Star can become an allusion to Göring 's Sun Gun) and practical (like if George Lucas isn't allowed to go to Tunisia, he will go to Guatemala and make Yavin IV the home planet of Luke Skywalker instead of Tatooine) circumstances. Captain America was largely forgotten after the US suffered a humiliating defeat in World War II, but Stan Lee and Jack Kirby revive the First Avenger in the 60s for the young American generation, featuring him in stories that involve enemies of America as the main villains, like Nazis and Japan. However, some parts of the NPP criticize Captain America comics for having racist caricatures of the Japanese. Astro Boy still gets released both in anime and manga format, with the main focus being on Astro Boy protecting the Japanese overseas territories from foreign invaders. The Beatles exist as a band in occupied England, and many believe they secretly have anti-government messages in their songs.

Failure Is the Only Option
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_260926c3 | comment |
Failure Is the Only Option: If Bormann wins the civil war and takes power, there is nothing he can do to save the Reich unless the player purposely does not go down most of his focuses. Instead, most of his focuses worsen the problems already faced by the Reich in the first place, thereby setting the stage for a greater collapse down the road. This is because Bormann himself believes the Reich is as powerful as ever and outright denies many of the structural and economic problems plaguing it. Similarly, there is no ultimate victory condition for Göring. Even if he brings to heel the entire European continent, his military adventures will sooner or later put him in direct conflict with the US and Japan, which can end only in nuclear war and the destruction of both the Reich and human civilization in the process. In many cases to do with Himmler, it is impossible to stop his designs, as befits a character designated as the diabolical mastermind of the mod and so endowed with the ability to bypass the reality that hit the Nazis after their victory and get the benefits but not negatives of ruling the kind of state Burgundy is — for example, it is impossible to stop him from stealing German nukes.

Allohistorical Allusion
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_2a035a26 | comment |
Allohistorical Allusion: The South African War is a muddy, murky conflict where the United States intervenes to save a southern nation from their northern counterpart who threatens to begin a domino effect that will spread its hostile ideology across the world anew. The United States, despite noble intentions, ends up committing its own share of atrocities and the American public begin to wonder why they're even in this jungle war. The war is equal parts Vietnam, Korea, and even Iraq. Burgundy is an angry, insular state seen as an international pariah that's building a nuclear arsenal to ward off an invasion, just like North Korea. Goering's death mirrors the death of Stalin almost exactly, down to his guards being too afraid to check on him for fear of a purge. The personality cult Goering builds is also very Stalin like. Iberia can collapse into multiple warring ethnic groups that it is supposedly an equal union of, much like Yugoslavia. India is being courted by all of the various powers who see it as being of the highest strategic importance, and generally sucks up to each one only long enough to get a better offer from another, much like Egypt. Speaking of India, the Raoists are essentially Maoists with an Indian accent with their focus on the countryside and the fact they can launch a Cultural Revolution. Many of Goering's Wunderwaffe were actually attempted by the US military. Speer can be assassinated by an ice pick while in exile, a parallel to Trotsky. One of Dirlewanger's death events references the shooting of Ronald Reagan, by having the assassin be a crazed man trying to impress a woman (in this case, Ukranian partisan fighter Lyudmila Pavlichenko), and Dirlewanger's Famous Last Words being "I hope you are all Germans." Instead of the Red Scare, there was an anti-Fascist Grey Scare, which was as inquisitorial as McCarthyism was in real life, although ultimately more cursory and less intense — if not for that if the Yockey wing of the NPP employs the Southern Strategy, Nixon can propose restarting the Grey Scare... The Yockeys of the NPP can employ the Southern Strategy to attract the dissatisfied White voters from the South, so they can both increase their electoral base and shift the (mostly left-wing) party to the extreme right. The 1960 U-2 incident almost happens in this timeline (complete with Gary Powers flying the spy plane in question), but in this timeline, the incident is over England, the U2 plane is able to escape the Luftwaffe sent to shoot it down, and one of the German pilots that almost shoots down Powers' U2 is Hermann Graf. Heydrich's Germany and DSR both have elements of the Khmer Rouge's brutal rule in Cambodia. Heydrich wants to engineer a "Spartanist" German society (a kind of primitivist fascist society), mirroring Pol Pot's desire to engineer an agrarian socialist utopia, with both forcibly evicting people from the cities to de-urbanize. DSR more generally reflects the genocidal purges that the Khmer Rouge enacts during its reign, leading to systematic killings of people accused of being enemies of the state.

Even Evil Has Standards: Nearly everybody fair or foul recognizes that Himmler is dangerously insane and will only work with him out of desperate necessity. Even within Nazi Germany itself he is recognized as a rogue element protected only by Hitler's sympathies, and his candidate for succession Reinhard Heydrich has no genuine public support. This goes so far that if Heydrich is made successor, the Reichstag will break with Hitler's orders and only confirm his position by the space of a few votes instead of the expected unanimous agreement that all other candidates receive. If Ngo Dinh Diem, the Nazi leader of Vietnam, goes too far with his "reforms", the Japanese will demand that he put an end to his "mindless violence" or they will invade Vietnam.

This is also the premise behind Ferdinand Schörner's Volkssturm, which drags in civilians with no training, arms them with whatever guns could be found (or with "simpler weapons" when there aren't enough guns), and then throws them into the maw of the enemy. Originally a measure brought about by the German Anarchy, Schörner claimed the draft would be disbanded after his victory... but makes it clear soon after it was all a lie, as the Volkssturm get drafted into every war that Schörner's Reich gets into afterwards (such as the invasion of Italy).

Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_372bc105 | comment |
Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism: The Poles of Nowa Polska can choose their place on the scale as they try to balance their traditions and their desire to not be driven out of a second homeland. They may abandon their traditions to form a union with the other Kazakh states, for example, abandoning their long held Catholic traditions and converting to Islam to unite with the fundamentalist Islamic state of Kustmay and gain protection against the Khanate, or they may resist that and stick it out and fight to maintain their traditions, guaranteeing war with Kustmay. Through cynical realpolitik, they may preserve the Polish people and avoid senseless bloodshed at the cost of their identity, while taking the idealistic course of action, they can hope to preserve their Polish identity, but at potentially great cost in actual Polish (and Kazakh) lives.

Curb-Stomp Battle | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_3d699462 | comment |
Curb-Stomp Battle: During the German Civil War, Burgundy's invasion of the French State counts as this. France's military is forced to be nothing more than a small and disorganized militia thanks to German treaty stipulations, they have no real air force or navy, oversights in their treaties with Germany mean they are not even able to militarize their border with Burgundy, their capital is on said border, the government is widely disliked and incompetent and has no means to manage such a crisis, the French resistance still fights to disable what little military forces the nation can maintain, the economy is dead in the water and if that wasn't enough, Brittany invades as well. This isn't counting the fact that Burgundy starts the game as the 4th strongest military in the world, hardly beat out by Germany, and gets a healthy amount of modifiers during the war to boot. To make it even worse, the mod isn't set up to handle France managing to hold off Burgundy (just for starters much of France's focus tree is unlocked by the defeat), so if/when a player manages to pull it off it breaks things in the mod.

Commie Nazis | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_6451e544 | comment |
Commie Nazis: The American National Progressive Party. Though it started as a party of former New Dealers and Dixiecrats, it was quickly infiltrated by Fascists ("Yockeys") and radical Socialists and now has a loud minority of both a far-left wing espousing Communist ideals and a far-right wing espousing Fascist ideals. The latter group is being directly funded by the Reich, and seeks to take revenge on the Japanese for their defeat in World War II through an alliance with Germany. Depending on player or AI actions either the far-left or Yockey wing of the NPP may end up in power, and impose Socialist or Fascist ideals upon the American populace. Despite being against the Nazis of Germany, the DSR often comes close to the Nazis in terms of policy (mostly due to having no idea what communism actually is outside of scattered black market pamphlets and Nazi propaganda) - specifically, some DSR leaders actually AGREE with the Nazis policies on the slave and caste system. A far more moderate examples is found in the Authoritarian Democrat ideology. Unlike Kaiserreich, Authoritarian Democrats in this mod are likely to also consist of people who have vaguely left-wing inclinations, but are too busy running a military government to implement socialism as is the case with and multiple Soviet warlords that fly the hammer and sickle. Case in point, these authoritarian democrats have very high degrees of socialist popularity in their ranks even though they use a method of government associated with the right in Kaiserreich.

Appeal to Force | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_65efc6dc | comment |
Appeal to Force: The main principle of Göring's policy is that everything can be achieved with enough brute force. Dissenters are rioting in the streets? Loose angry soldiers on them like a pack of hellhounds! The state doesn't have enough money? Grab it from the citizenry and bankers while giving them empty promises, and ensure that they will never ask for debts again! Nothing left to take from the population? Loot foreign nations for wealth! Diplomacy? There is no diplomacy in Göring's vision, only war! Of course, this policy can easily backfire if Germany shows any sign of weakness and the success of Göring's Reich depends on the balance of military victories abroad and maintaining stability at home, which gets harder as enemies of Germany become stronger (up to nuclear nations like the US and Japan) and the Reich's economy becomes more and more unsustainable. Or if Göring suddenly dies...

Hostile Terraforming | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_666648a3 | comment |
Hostile Terraforming: Shortly after their victory in the war, the Germans embarked on the Atlantropa project, an effort to dam up the Strait of Gibraltar and drain the Mediterranean Sea to create huge quantities of new land as well as create hydroelectric power. This required them to pressure their erstwhile Mediterranean allies in Iberia, Italy and Turkey to accept this. The result was the total collapse of the Mediterranean economy as coastal ports suddenly found themselves miles inland and unable to trade. To make matters worse, the German economy essentially ceased to exist almost as soon as the project was completed, forcing the Germans to abandon the project and hand control of the dam to the Iberian Union, who found that there were so many faults with the dam that it threatened to burst and cause a flood of biblical proportions. The whole debacle has caused the three Mediterranean powers to turn on Germany and form their own faction, the Triumvirate.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_6ca9144b | comment |
Restart the World: A major theme of The New Order is that the world is so utterly broken by an Axis victory that it will never recover, and that the only real way for the horrors of Fascism to end is for the world to be destroyed in nuclear fire. Many of the post-apocalyptic events take an unusually optimistic tone, and the ending overall takes a more positive outlook than even an ending where democracy sweeps the Earth. The implication is that, over time, the sins of the past will be lost to history and mankind will move on and rebuild. In a very twisted way, Himmler is right.

Ordenstaat Burgund (Burgundy) is a country so oppressive that even the Nazis found them insane. Burgundy is under total control by SS leader Heinrich Himmler, who had completely gone off the deep end, believing that Nazism is too far left and now subscribes to an extreme Spartanist totalitarian society, which he calls the Burgundian System. Burgundy is a Nineteen Eighty-Four styled dystopia where the SS maintains a tight grip on the lifestyle of every citizen through mass surveillance and extreme punishment, the Spartanist lifestyle prohibits any societal excesses and freedoms, and that's without even going into the entire baseline Nazi ideology of discrimination against non-Aryans and the active slavery. Worse, the Burgundian System is accepted by multiple Nazi officials across Europe (like the aformentioned Josias), meaning that a significant portion of Europe may come under the Burgundian System depending on who takes power.

From Bad to Worse | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_7870735b | comment |
From Bad to Worse: Germany's civil war is already a terrible event that severely damages the Reich, but should it last too long the country shall fall into total chaos - the German Anarchy. If this happens, things start to get really crazy. Goering may get overthrown by some of his dissatisfied generals, who will then form the Government of National Reconstruction led by Ferdinand Schörner. Schörner, as the leader of newly founded military junta, will try to impose the conscription law for all Germans and organize militias of masses of untrained civilians into the Volkssturm, building his road to victory on the countless bodies of poorly armed men, women and even children. Speer may face a surprise insurrection from the far-leftist wing of his former supporters, who rise up in a Communist revolt as the German Socialist Republic (DSR). These Communists may end up even worse than the Nazis themselves, given that their conquest of a nation so devoted to National Socialism will probably require an extreme amount of purging to remove counterrevolutionary elements. Heydrich may get killed by Himmler for his failure to win the war in a satisfactory time. This takes him out of the war, but Himmler and Burgundy annex the Rhineland. Worst of all is that any one of the factions can decide that launching their nuclear arsenal at their opponents is their only chance of winning the war. If this happens, any chance of Germany returning to its former power is gone as the country is turned into a radioactive failed state. Witnessing all this, Speidel and Rommel may decide that their neutrality in Germania has gone on long enough and mobilize their forces to strike all four factions and attempt to restore order to Germany. Though they have only a small force, theirs is still fully equipped and fresh while all the other factions have been worn down by years of fighting and possible nuclear devastation, meaning that they stand a chance of victory.

Balkanize Me: Following the Soviet defeat in WWII, the territory of the former USSR consists of 4 Reichskommissariats and around 60 independent states in the Urals and beyond. The Luftwaffe engages in constant terror bombing to prevent any major power from trying to reunite the Soviet Union, creating large amounts of warlord states and local dictatorships. Kazakhstan alone shattered into seven pieces. Iberia's breakup is so extreme that it makes the real-life Yugoslav Wars look simple in comparison. The new independent territories that can break away from Iberia includes Spain, Portugal, Basque, Catalonia, Asturias and Galicia. The North African territories of Iberia will likely also break away into Morocco, Algeria, Rif Republic, Kabylian Republic, as well as a West African Islamic Republic (some of whom might also be at war with each other). In some cases, even the Gibraltar Dam declares independence, and the exiled Iberian Government might find a footing and start their own new state. In a worst case scenario, civil wars break out simultaneously during the balkanization and fight themselves into a stalemate, leaving behind even more states on the map. The Reorganized Government of China de jure governs all Chinese territory excluding the Japanese-controlled Manchuria. In practice, RGOC only governs the Eastern parts of China; the rest of China is divided between lots of warlord states and Japanese-occupied areas that are de facto independent.

"Rashomon"-Style: There are at least three contradicting interpretations of the Cape Town massacre (should it happen after you decide to crush the protests as South Africa). The police claims that it's the ANC who started the fire, the ANC claims that the army, as soon as they reached the city, started to slaughter the protesters and Albert Hertzog claims that the massacre was a mere excuse to launch crackdown on the Boer nationalists. The only thing that is clear is that at least 47 people died and every side calls for blood for that event.

Dark Horse Victory: Out of all candidates for Hitler's successor few people expect that Heydrich, widely hated and feared for being exceptionally brutal even by Nazi standards and believed to be Himmler's puppet, can actually win Hitler's favor. If he does, hardly anyone outside of the SS will support the Führer's will and even the Reichstag confirms Hitler's decision by a margin of a few votes, instead of the unconditional support which other candidates receive. If Germany falls into anarchy as a result of the German Civil War, Speidel may attack the other factions and attempt to restore order on his own. If Speer takes too long to win, a far-left coalition of Communists and Socialists will launch a coup against him, which could lead to them taking over his faction or appearing in the civil war as a faction themselves, and they can win against the other factions.

Vestigial Empire: Nazi Germany is ailing, falling at the seams, has a failed economy that is seeing no signs of improvement, relies on a constantly rebellious slave caste for its industry, has fallen behind militarily and diplomatically to Imperial Japan and The United States, and its entire sphere seems to be planning out the best ways to break away and invade each other. France, both Nazi puppet and Resistance flavors; The French State is partially balkanized with an indepedent Britanny and one third occupied by the SS Ordenstaat Burgund (The SS's personal fiefdom), with their only colony being the city of Algiers and surroundings while the rest of Algeria was annexed by Italy. Free France got it even worse; the North African possessions were taken by the Italians and the Central African ones were taken by the Germans. West Africa, the only remaining territory, is bombed into oblivion daily as training by German pilots to prevent any threats rising. Their only territory still under their effective control is the Ivory Coast.

Stupid Jetpack Hitler: Subverted. Bormann, if he takes power, tries to have German scientists commit to the creation of superweapons, super cities, and a mission to Mars as soon as possible. However, most of these efforts are useless, achieving something only marginally useful or backfiring and even leading to the deaths of the research teams assigned to said projects. Also subverted with Göring, who wants to apply research purely on superweapons, including the Sun Gun. However, it's implied none of these experimental weapons will work either, with the Sun Gun in particular falling out of orbit and serving as ANOTHER Death Event for Dirlewanger when parts of it crush him flat.

Civil War: An absolutely astounding number of countries can collapse into civil wars: The German Civil War is guaranteed to break out between the various successors of Hitler upon his death. The South African War inevitably breaks out between the central government, Nazi-backed Afirkaner rebels, and, depending on circumstances, the African National Congress. Reichskommissariat Ostland shares political instability with Germany and their internal struggle can escalate up to a 12-way civil war. An Indian Civil War can break out when the political tensions reach a breaking point before or after the first election, fought between the central government and right wing and left wing radicals. The Iberian Wars is in its basic form a series of wars of independence between Spain, Portugal, and several regional separatist powers. However, if things truly go out of hand, Spain and Portugal will also collapse into civil wars, adding a layer of wars onto the independence wars. In a worst case scenario, even the regional powers will collapse into civil wars. Egypt appears to have a chance to collapse into its own multi-sided civil war due to the incompetent rule of Sultan Farouk.

Such a myriad of ways to die for Dirlewanger was intentionally put in by the developers to make justice for one of the most despicable Nazi war criminals, both in real life and the New Order. In the case of Kovner's victory in the Ostland Civil War, all other leaders, aside from Vituska, die horrible, horrible deaths. However, even considering the boundless brutality of Kovner himself, it is very hard sorry for all of them (aside from maybe Andreas Meyer-Landrut), as they are Nazis of different flavors who contributed to all of the genocidal horrors happening in Ostland.

Crapsack World: As a result of the total Axis victory, the power balance of the world had dramatically shifted towards the oppressive side, with brutal and oppressive leaders becoming the new norm across the world. Despite this, political instability is higher than ever, with multiple countries across the globe on the verge of civil wars and conflicts with each other. With a three-way Cold War occurring between three nuclear-equipped superpowers, the threat of a nuclear holocaust looms over the horizon. In this world, some of the more notable crapsack places include: The former Soviet Union had became a massive bandit country due to an endless Luftwaffe bombing campaign, with numerous regional warlords clawing at each other's throats and fighting endless wars. The Ultranationalist Omsk and the territory controlled by the Dirlewanger Brigade are two of the most brutal areas in the former Soviet Union, ruled by vengeance-seeking ultranationalists and an Army of Thieves and Whores respectively. The state of Magnitogorsk is a unique beast within the former Soviet Union, ruled by a Mad Scientist who believes that humans can improve under extreme conditions, leading to him kidnap entire villages of people and subject them to torturous human experiments in an attempt to create Super Soldiers. Reichskommissariat Kaukasia is an oppressive state under the leadership of Nazi Reichskommissar Josias, and his unrestricted industrial development absolutely decimated the environment, causing endless smog that makes life unbearable. A large section of North Africa is listed simply as "Anarchy", because the Nazis instigated a decades-long aerial bombing campaign (like in the Soviet Union) to extinguish the remnants of Free France. Whatever still remains in the area have already been bombed back into the stone age. Much of Central Africa is ruled by three colonialist German Reichskommissariats, who exploit the locals as slave labor and profit off of their suffering. Hans Hüttig's Ostafrika is the most brutal of the three RKs, and runs his RK like a massive concentration camp. In the long run, he might take over all of the RKs in Africa and head straight down the path of Ultranationalism.

Ambition Is Evil: Played straight with Heydrich, whose ambitions for power and influence leads him to work for Himmler (widely recognized even in the Reich as one of the most evil men on the planet) and if he becomes Führer desires to extend his rule over the German territories, with himself at the head of a Spartanist Reich. Implied to be subverted with Speer, who might well be doing what he does in much out of a desire for glory and influence — but between his relatively sane, sensible outlook on things and his choice of allies, that leads him to be by far the most peaceable, liberal candidate to claim the Führership.

The Revolution Will Not Be Civilized: One might think somewhat highly of the German Socialist Republic compared to their Nazi peers, except that Germany has been ruled by Nazism for over a generation, and turning sharply from that path will require very harsh measures, up to and including mass purges. Kovner's United Partisan Organization, the only non-Nazi starting faction during the Ostland Civil War, are absolutely unambiguous in their goals to burn the entire Ostland down and kill all the Germans here.

Proxy War: Many, in true Cold War fashion. If you are participating in one, you can send a group of "advisor" divisions (from a small amount of volunteers of 1-3 divisions to 50, effectively replacing home military with your own) to a faction you support. While it starts simple enough, further escalation of war can lead to some unconvinient events, like growing unrest at home and potential diplomatic crisis with other superpowers, which can turn out in a nuclear conflict in especially unlucky outcomes. Some examples of such wars in the mod: The South African Civil War between the OFN-backed South African government and the Axis-backed Boer rebels serves as this timeline's version of The Vietnam War, complete with American soldiers trudging through hostile terrain while guerrillas hide out in the bush, as well as the expected peace protests and political bickering back home. While Burgundy lacks an opportunity to have a strong presence in the German Civil War, Heydrich's Germany is essentially a proxy side for them, as the German SS is unquestionably loyal to Himmler rather than Heydrich, himself a little more than Himmler's puppet.

Alternate History | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_a86069f | comment |
Alternate History: The general timeline is as follows: The Point of Divergence involves Bukharin becoming the leader of the Soviet Union in the 20s, which leads to a weak Soviet Union and an isolationist United States (as detailed in the POD trope below). During WWII, without the Soviet Union and the United States, the Axis easily defeats the Allies in Europe. The Soviet Union completely collapses: Bukharin was ousted from power, a civil war erupted, and German terror bombing reduced its territory into a wasteland. In the Pacific, Japan still attacks Pearl Harbor and brings an unprepared (though still powerful) USA into the war. As USA plans for a counteroffensive in Australia, Germany develops the atomic bomb first (in some ways another Point of Divergence) and nukes Pearl Harbor in 1944, defeating USA. Without the rest of the Allies, Japan also defeats China and Southeast Asia. The Allies were completely defeated. In the 50s, Germany suffers a massive economic crash. The Axis disbands, Himmler attempts a failed coup and was forced into Burgundy. In the United States, the Democratic Party collapses and was replaced by the NPP, and its remnants joined the Republican Party. In the 60s, when the game starts, Richard Nixon is the current US president. America forms the OFN to counteract Japan and Germany. Japan's global ambitions grow, leading to them putting nukes in Hawaii and starting the Hawaii Missile Crisis. Germany is increasingly unstable, with a young generation beginning to protest against the failures of Germany.

Tomsk is one of the largest states in the region and starts as a Social Conservative democratic state led by Boris Pasternak. Pavlodar is led by Kazakh nationalists who want to rebuild Kazakstan on democratic principles and liberate it from the tyranny of local warlords, even though their opposition from both within and without is very formidable. Alternate History Wank: Zigzagged. The mod creators acknowledge the many logistical implausibilities of an Axis victory, playing the trope straight as far as the war is concerned. However, as soon as the war ends, the Nazis' corrupt and overextended system almost completely collapses and the rest of the Axis powers don't fare much better, preventing them from doing something completely ridiculous like conquering the entire world.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_b6e1d40b | comment |
Acceptable Breaks from Reality: The Atlantropa dam is described as being a ramshackle mess left behind by the collapsing Reich and only barely maintained by the Iberian Union. One can only imagine the sheer devastation that could be unleashed upon the Mediterranean if the dam were breached... unfortunately (or fortunately, if you are more compassionately inclined), this cannot happen in game, due to the limitations of the game engine. The setting of the mod, as with most Axis-victory fiction, takes a great number of liberties with regards to realism. The construction of Atlantropa in just a few years (whereas realistically it would have taken decades) is one such feature, as is the success of Operation Sea Lion and Nazi Germany getting nuclear weapons first. However, this can be hand waved as creating a good story. And in any case, reality hits hard going into the 1950s, with the Reich coming to a point of almost being a failed state and Atlantropa being the disaster that anyone could see it to be with a moment of sensible thought.

While those artifacts. if they even exist, have little practical use for Josias, such expeditions launch various event chains with different outcomes, from gaining prestige and new friends to wasteful loss of many resources and international humiliation. Dirlewanger may act as hired muscle for Josias in his expeditions and potentially meet his end doing so. Furthermore, if he betrays Lysenko his looting of the Black Mountain is basically a higher-tech take on the trope as Dirlewanger attempts to loot the great technological wealth Lysenko created.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_bf72d5e8 | comment |
The Spartan Way: Spartanism is a key element of the Burgundian System, best shown in the ways Heydrich completely reforms the German society after he becomes the Führer. In Spartanism, entertainment, freedom, and excess are seen as decadent, so Heydrich completely de-urbanizes Germania, strips away all welfare, property, culture, and entertainment, and forces all the citizens to either work in the industries or in the military. Life is reduced to its bare minimum, with homes replaced by minimalist communal barracks and even clothing is regulated to militaristic basics. Laziness is equated to crime, and crime is instantly punished by permanent banishment to the slave camps. The Burgundian System believes that such a total oppression and control from the state would create a perfect race of hardworking Aryans.

Shout-Out: One of the focuses in Speer's political tree, in case he ends up an Authoritarian Democrat, is named "Springtime for Freedom, and Germany!". "Break The Chains", the slogan of the Syndicalist International from Kaiserreich: Legacy of the Weltkrieg, appears in several focus trees. One of the most notable examples is the British focus tree, where the "We Shall Break The Chains!" focus starts the tree for the British Resistance. Part of Goering's invasion of America involves searching for the mythical 'Star Wars' program so that he can stop America's nuclear defense system, a reference to World in Conflict. Dirlewanger's death events: One of the events has a Whole Plot Reference to Little Red Riding Hood, where Dirlewanger plays the role of the Wolf to a Russian girl's Red Hood, and where the "Red Hood" shoots Dirlewanger in the end. There is an event with references to Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Dirlewanger finds the legendary Ark of the Covenant, only to be killed by the spirits within it. Another event references Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Dirlewanger drinking from the wrong chalice. Both times he is thwarted by pesky American archeologists. "Did you ever hear the tragedy of Dirlewanger the Wild? I thought not, it's not a tale the Russians would tell you...". Multiple of the events reference Fallout: New Vegas, including one which is a rewritten Courier's bad ending from the Dead Money expansion. Yet another has a Ural Ranger wander into Dirlewanger's camp and challenge him to a duel. Dirlewanger accepts, believing he will easily earn a thirty-sixth notch on his Luger and his men similarly assume the imminent demise of the handsome Ranger. When they draw at 11:20, the Ural Ranger effortlessly slays the bandit lord with the Makarov on his hip. This also doubles as another Fallout: New Vegas shout-out as Marty Robbins's Big Iron is well-known to many New Vegas fans from its use in New Vegas's soundtrack. In yet another, entitled "REDACTED", men from a "foundation" abduct Dirlewanger and the acknowledgement text reads "Hey, isn't that the DATA EXPUNGED?". The death event "Komet Sighted" is a reference to vanilla Hearts of Iron IV's reference to Europa Universalis's infamous "Comet Sighted" event, and like the vanilla event, it centers around the Me 163 Komet. One event has Dirlewanger's camp pulverized by a falling meteor, which some ConspiracyTheorists claimed was a deliberate attack by aliens "I'm from Russia, and I'm glad they killed them all!". Another event has him enter a church where a man with an American accent is singing "Amazing Grace", which promptly causes his bodyguards to flee the church while leaving him behind. Yet another event has a single American soldier mow down his men before impaling him with a steam pipe. Complete with the Bond One-Liner "Looks like Dirlewanger let off some steam." The death of Dirlewanger from wounds taken during boar hunting is an allusion to those of Robert Baratheon in A Song of Ice and Fire. Dirlewanger even echoes the Famous Last Words of the same character in Game of Thrones. Dirlewanger can die during a hunt on Zanzibar Hamsters. And yet another event has him kill the dog of a former NKVD agent who had the nickname "Butzemann", who then murders all of his men before putting two bullets into his head. The reaction quote (presumably Dirlewanger's Famous Last Words)? The option for the Alma-Ata liberal uprising event (if you're playing as Pavlodar) reads as "Many Alma-Atans died to bring us this opportunity". The U-2 Incident event for Germany mentions over three hundred confirmed kills of Hermann Graf. The Polish resistance tree has the Poles repeatedly call the German occupiers "Bastards" in multiple focuses. To protect themselves from nuclear attacks, Omsk can introduce bunker systems with a large metro system designed to house their leadership and troops. A post-apocalyptic event named "A Canticle" where priests preserve an pre-war nuclear missle site and protect its secrets from unprepared masses is a clear reference to A Canticle for Leibowitz. One of the events in Farouk's tree is called "The Fast and the Farouk". A focus for Ostafrika is called "Southern Roads, take us home". Another focus for Ostafrika is named "GET YOUR FREE TVS!", which is a reference to the first test level of Half-Life 2. Icon for the focus is even modeled after the only known screenshot of the level. The name for Turkey's operation Black Bull during the Second Italo-Turkish war is a reference to KARA BOĞA, a Turkish anti-white troll movement on 4chan. The USFI uses Cool Cat as their mascot to get in touch with the Icelandic youth. Farouk's trip to Japan is associated with the focus "Go! Go! Nippon! Another Trip to Japan" If Reichskommissariat Amerika doesn't provide enough aid to Robert Shelton and the Ku Klux Klan, they'll be wiped out by the Black Panthers, and Shelton himself is strapped to a giant cross, and burned alive. This is what Lincoln Clay does to finish off Remy Duvall, leader of the Southern Union.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_cb2d889 | comment |
Won the War, Lost the Peace: Germany may have done far better than it ever could have hoped in World War II, but it absolutely botched everything after, and is on the verge of its death by 1962. The core of the German Civil War is the different answers the full contendersnote Spiedel starts out simply wanting to keep the fighting out of Germania — although presumably he develops some form of post-war plan if he ends up waging war to restore order to Germany, as can happen if he's attacked, the war drags out too long or he rejects the eventual victor. have to this. Bormann denies there is an issue and acts as if Germany is still going strong, Göring reasons that since Germany did so good during the war and then things went bad when it ended Germany should wage war on more-or-less the rest of the world, Speer wants to reform Germany and its alliance system into something more sane and coherent (with four different combinations on how far he goes) and Heydrich desires to reshape Germany into a Spartan society and reunify the Reich (but his patron, Himmler, actually desires global nuclear apocalypse). Neither the OFN nor Afrika Schild find themselves in an ideal situation should they achieve total victory in the South African War. If the OFN is victorious, they end up in control of a massive area of ruined land, still crawling with African guerillas, many of whom had willingly joined the SS brigades. They, along with the still-unhappy Boers, will pose a lasting nightmare for South Africa and the US military administration of Central Africa. Meanwhile, Afrika Schild and the Boer State are left holding control of a massive ANC-aligned population if they win, and without the threat of the OFN have every reason to turn on one another.

Should they reunify Russia, they can declare a war of extermination on Germany to avenge the massacre of the Slavic race, followed by war against the Japanese for their part in the war, and can even go as far to wage war against the former Allies for their failure to help Russia defeat the Nazis.

Most of the leaders of DSR in real life were members of the far-left Red Army Faction that was held responsible for 34 deaths, but others were members of moderate non-violent leftist activist groups, as well as some moderate early RAF members who were arrested and stopped engaging in violent activism. In TNO, a combination of Nazism lasting much longer and being given the power of a country after a period of anarchy apparently radicalized all of them to the extreme, and DSR under their rule will engage in an insanely brutal Reign of Terror that borders on a self-genocide.

Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_d4a4771e | comment |
Richard Nixon the Used Car Salesman: Claude Auchinleck and William Alexander of the British Resistance qualify. Auchinleck, a relatively obscure British general who after World War II retired after what some would consider a mediocre career, and Alexander, a veteran of the Spanish Civil War and World War II who would found the British Communist Party which obviously never took any real power in Britain, both now lead the largest resistance cells on the isles. Both of them can help overthrow the regime and throw the Nazis out, and have gone from obscure historical figures to possibly the heroes of England, and maybe the rest of the Isles as well. Meanwhile, actual Richard Nixon is the president of the United States for the Republican-Democratic Party... in 1960. John F. Kennedy is Nixon's Vice-President and, aside from that, he is mostly the same Jack Kennedy as we know him in real life, but he is very unpopular among the American population because of his father's reputation (who led America to disastrous defeat in WWII) and rumorous ties of his family with Nazis. Rudolf Hess was executed by Nazis for treason during the German occupation of England, while Joseph Goebbels was assassinated in Paris under mysterious circumstances during 50s. Key figures of the Red Army Faction, such as Ulrike Meinhof, Andreas Baader and Gudrun Ensslin, can lead the German Socialist Republic in the Civil War, breaking away from Speer's faction during the Anarchy. Georgy Zhukov, Alexander Vasilevsky, Kliment Voroshilov and other famed Soviet generals ended up as Russian warlords in their own right.

In reality, while the real Göring was a murderous, power hungry kleptocrat and guilty of crimes against humanity, he was one of the more jovial and laid back of the Nazi inner circle, and also didn't like to start wars that he thought he couldn't win (he initially opposed the invasion of Poland because he saw them as a potential ally, until he realised he'd lose his status if he didn't co-operate with Hitlers plan). A lot of the more radical and brutal post-Soviet warlords are based on obscure Soviet veterans (many of which are Heroes of the Soviet Union recipients) with largely unknown real-life personalities. Leaders fitting this description include Mikhain Antipin of Gaynskiy, Alexander Medvedev (Andreas Meier) of the Aryan Brotherhood, Nikolai Onoprienko of Khromtau, Nikolai Zabelkin of Kustmay, Abu Dusukhambetov (Abu Khan) of Kokshetau, and Viktor Boychenko of Aktau. There is also a case of "clearly gone insane" in the form of Rurik II of Kemerovo, formerly Soviet marshal Nikolay Krylov.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_e16cd24e | comment |
Know When to Fold 'Em: One of the main purposes of the Republican-Democratic party in foreign policy is keeping America from direct military conflicts with Germany and Japan and to avoid escalation of the Cold War into "hot" as long as it ever possible. Since, according to CIA reports, Germany and Japan are slowly deteriorating and will likely collapse by themselves in 70s and 80s respectively, the R-D governing elite hopes to peacefully reclaim the captured ports and force back all the rival superpowers afterwards. However, the National Progressive Party has a different opinion on this matter...

Cruel Mercy: As the victor of the Civil War, a lot of Heydrich's focuses concern this sort of "benevolence". The soldiers are denied their pensions and turned into penal units, but are spared the purges that he foists on the officers and may someday be forgiven. The wealthy are allowed to live...so that they may serve as the model examples of the Spartanist lifestyle, their prosperity confiscated by the state. The students, if Heydrich does not simply execute them all, are instead sent to the slave camps to serve alongside those they fought for. Denmark, Bohemia, and Poland are subjected to military invasion, but are not purged as the rest of the rebellious puppets are.

Whole-Plot Reference | |
The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_e303d198 | comment |
Whole Plot Reference: The Ural states form an extended reference to Fallout: New Vegas and its Old World Blues expansion. Orenburg is the Mojave in general and New Vegas itself in particular — a loose collection of city-states with no real central government outside of the central city itself, which is heavily influenced by a genius industrialist, that their neighbors are fighting over. Furthermore, much like the outlying Mojave communities, the outlying villages of Orenburg are highly autonomous, often technologically lacking compared to the city and the neighboring states, and chafe under both greater control from the city and against the prospect of greater influence from their "benefactors" in the Ural League. The Dirlewanger Brigade is a stand-in for Caesar's Legion — an organized and brutal force founded by an aging member of a semi-autonomous entity within a larger power who was presumed missing, and which is as much a raiding army as a state and seeks to acquire the riches of Orenburg. Furthermore, Dirlewanger himself parallels Caesar, as a member of a hegemonic nation from the west that was lost and presumed dead in lands further east, but in actuality, was carving out a new empire, and has designs of conquering his old homeland if his more immediate goals succeed. The biggest difference is that Dirlewanger and his men have no real desire to settle, making them something more like a Legion held together by Lanius rather than Caesar. The Ural League is the New California Republic, or at least the Mojave detachment thereof — they're a highly professional force that has declared its intent to protect Orenburg and any refugees that may seek to join them, but their training limits their forces in the field and like the NCR in the Mojave, they're largely based out of old world military bases and fortifications and waited out the end of the old regime in fortified bunkers (vaults for the NCR and gulags for the Ural League). Magnitogorsk, led by the Mad Scientist Trofim Lysenko and based out of the Black Mountain, is a clear stand-in for the Big MT and the Think Tank that leads it, with Lysenko acting more or less as the unchained Think Tank from the Old World Blues Bad Ending.

Point of Divergence: Stalin loses the power struggles to Bukharin in the 20's, who continues the New Economic Policy, which fails and leaves the Soviet Union underindustrialized, allowing Germany to steamroll Russia during World War II. This also allowed Hoover to defeat Roosevelt in the 1932 American presidential elections due to unflattering comparisons of Roosevelt's New Deal with Bukharin's NEP, paving the way for conservative candidate Joseph P. Kennedy to win the 1936 elections, causing the United States to remain isolationist and completely unready for war.

Fascist, but Inefficient: Germany's existence writ large since WWII has been one of suffering the consequences of victory, culminating in the crisis at the start of the game. Should Bormann win the civil war this will only intensify. Speer's Fascist path is a twist on it in that it is relatively efficient — compared to the various National Socialist or Ultranationalist and Burgundian System paths other contenders have; arguably the entire point of it is that Nazism is so inefficient that (sanely) trying to make something that works better from it mellows it out enough to be classifiable as closer to Italian-style Fascism than Nazism.

Great Offscreen War: Aside from alternate WWII, there was a West Russian Revolutionary War in the 50s between Germany and the warlord state of the West Russian Revolutionary Front (supported by the US and Japan to prevent the German expansion outside of Europe) which expanded into terrtiories of RK Moskowien and intended to reclaim the entirety of Russia. Germany emerged victorious in the war and pushed the West Russians beyond the A-A Line, but the price for victory was too high for the Reich. The in-game British revolution is referred to as the third Battle of London, and several mentions are made to a poorly run, disastrous rebellion in the 50s that nearly led to England being utterly destroyed and as the largest reason the Cornwall Garrison still exists.

The New Order: Last Days of Europe (Video Game) / int_f9c17447 | comment |
The Remnant: After the Nazis' triumphant march into Moscow and subsequent annexation of most land west of the Urals, the Soviet Union broke apart. All former Russian territory not annexed by Germany or Japan has been taken over by a myriad of squabbling warlords, mercenaries and supposed successor states following every ideology under the sun, many of whom claim to be the rightful rulers of Russia and who can potentially make a push to reclaim their country if the occupying powers grow weak enough. The West Russian Revolutionary Front was once powerful enough to wage war against Germany in 50s and try to reclaim Moskowien, but it was defeated and since then their territory was reduced to Arkhangelsk with a loose control over several other warlord states, like Zhukov's Ukhta. Kyzyl Orda claims to be the remnant of the Kazakh SSR and if they successfully reunite Kazakhstan, they can move to the Russian lands in order to restore the Soviet Union. Magnitogorsk became a refuge for a group of Soviet scientists and former NKVD division, that still believes they serve the Soviet Union, even though their leader, Trofim Lysenko, is more interested in performing human experiments rather than reinstitution of the Soviet power. Tajikistan is one of the few nations of Central Asia which stayed loyal to the principles of Communism and maintained the Soviet apparatus, but rather than claiming succession of the dead superpower they are waiting for a new Soviet Union to emerge and rescue their weak, poor and isolated country. Free France is still fighting, although their situation is even worse. Their previous territory in North Africa was either annexed by the Axis or it's bombed daily by the Luftwaffe so hard (doesn't matter if it's actually Free French troops or a local native village) that the entire area is just labeled as "Anarchy". Their last remnants are located on Ivory Coast and they are barely holding on to that too.
